I’m leaning Brissett, but I’d love to see what others think.

I know some of these options are highly unlikely (Cousins), but thought I’d include them anyways.

I voted 1st round rookie and think Drake Maye is the most likely. If I put odds on it:

Drake Maye - 30%
Jayden Daniels - 25%
Jacoby Brissett - 20%
Caleb Williams - 5%
JJ McCarthy - 5%
Baker Mayfield - 5%
Other - 10%

It's going to be either Maye or Daniels, I would guess.(basically the guy Washington doesn't take)

The Pats have a 0% chance to get Caleb. I would say McCarthy is 0% too because he's not as good as the top 3. Baker is 0% too, because he will stay in Tampa.

Really hoping Jacoby comes home with a sweetened deal over what LVR, ATL or other QB-hungry teams could offer. We have it, and should spend it (3 years, 20M guaranteed total cash, mostly bonus, third year for dumping bonus to future cap by which time #NEWQB is ready).

1st round draft pick is my vote, whomever that may be.
I’m unsure how any of you picked Jacoby, since he is not even on the team.

My only hope for Caleb is if the Bears are so frustrated with their offers for Fields they say screw it.

I voted Brissett. I hope they draft JJ, but I think Brissett is QB1 regardless of who they take. I’m cautiously optimistic that the pats FO sees the benefit of easing a rookie in. The O line and weapons are both suspect, and we’ve seen many guys benefit from the phase in approach (Brady, mahomes, love)

All of this is hard to predict but I don’t know how you can say JJ is 0 pct. I’m confident he’s a better player than Maye

Someone help me out with the Brissett love affair - to be clear I’m not against it, but I need someone. To make the case beyond the following -

Competent NFL starter that won’t lose games, won’t kill the cap, and gets the #3 pick a year to acclimate to the league?

or

Familiar name from the past that hasn’t yet embarrassed himself, but isn’t going to stand in the rookie’s way or hurt the cap?

Either way, how does this improve the NEP in 2025?

I think what people are trying to say that if he signs for say 3/21 then he is 7 million dollars a better value than starting Zappe.

Couple things, I think. He's reportedly been a great locker room guy his whole career. A team in flux needs that. You know exactly what you're getting with him. He can keep things around .500 until the rookie is ready. He's familiar with this staff and can reinforce messaging. And, finally, he should be cheap for a QB. I'd expect around 2/13 or something with some of that in roster bonuses and no guarantee beyond year 1.

Brissett doesn’t improve the Pats in 2025 beyond perhaps being a useful backup and allowing Rookie QB to be better in 2025 with not being rushed to start in 2024

I hope it's Zappe, who plays the first month or two and they let the kid in.

I don't get the Brissett thing from a money standpoint. He will cost, what, $10M? Have Zappe do it, spend the $10M elsewhere. We aren't a playoff team next year so just have Zappe play through Halloween and hope for a top 10 pick next year....

Honestly I've been on Team QB with the #3 pick since forever, and there is no one thing I can point at to say why my mind has changed, but I can see another path with the signing of Bourne and Henry. The D is still elite, so sign Wilson, draft MHJ at #3 and take a second tier QB to back up Wilson for a few years to develop, then draft all the O linemen. Bob is also getting up there, and he might not want to try and wait out a rebuild.

If Brisette starts the upcoming season for the Pats, I'd hope it's because they drafted someone with the #3 and want to ease him in. Otherwise, there's no reason to sign a bottom 15 QB to any contract.

Yeah, rereading after I posted I should have been a tad more clear, I'm not married to Wilson, but someone like him. I think Cousins and Wilson are in the same tier, but I worry Cousins might end up being too pricey for how I want the team to approach FA. I wouldn't hate someone from the Brissett, Tannehill, Minshew, Mayfield crowd, but I'd have less confidence. I also don't watch non Pats games so I lack the knowledge to truly rate them against eachother, not going to pretend I know the difference. I'm just coming around more to a world where the #3 pick isn't a QB, and I can see the front office is laying the groundwork for it, giving the team more options

The more interesting question is who is Washington going to draft? Early reports seemed to point to Daniels with his potential scheme fit but newer reports say they like Maye. My guess is the Patriots really want Maye as he seems like a perfect fit for an AVP offense. I also think there are fewer long-term questions about him (in terms of ability and durability).

This is sort of where I was headed with my question. If you're easing a rookie QB in but a) not giving them meaningful snaps and b) having them sit behind a flawed stopgap (this isn't Brady in Tampa or even Montana in KC), aren't you effectively punting a season? Are you shooting for another top-3 pick in 2025? Seems too clever by half.

ETA - I want nothing to do with Zappe moving forward. As bad as Mac without the baggage.

I think Brissett starts in game 1 and most if not all of season 1. I do think the Pats will grab a QB at 3, but unless that guy looks immediately ready in camp he's getting a redshirt year.

I do not agree. I do think Jacoby starts the first few games.

But the Pats will want to see their QB in games at some point. How can you build around a guy if you don't know what he can do?

If they end up with Daniels, maybe they put in a package for him and he gets some exposure that way even if he doesn't start. But I think they are going to be mindful of what has happened to Mac as well as other high drafted QBs and not rush whomever they draft. Eliot Wolf came through the Packers system where young QBs weren't rushed (even if that was alegely situational thing) and the GOAT sat for a year and 2 game before getting his chance.

I also think Brissett will play well enough to hang onto the job for a while - if instead he faceplants like Scott Secules did, that changes the situation.

Seems like Bourne votes Zappe.
New England recently acquired old friend Jacoby Brissett – and may end up taking a QB at at No. 3 in the NFL Draft – but Bourne made it clear he still trusts Bailey Zappe.
Bourne, speaking with the Boston Herald‘s Andrew Callahan, on the “Pats Interference Football Podcast,” voiced his support for his teammate. “Zappe is a special guy to me, you know what I mean?” Bourne told Callahan. “I believe in him. I think he’s a sleeper that people are, really, you know, looking over.”

Was the "looking over" Zappe comment a burn? If so, well played by Bourne!

I think it's going to be a rookie and if it's not, it will be by Week 5.

Having listened to Mayo’s press conference this morning, this is my take on who starts and what will happen in the draft, which is very much tired into that question.

- the brain trust is understandably focused on the team’s multiple key needs, and seems not to view Maye and Daniels as clearly better enough than 2-3 other potential QB picks. As a result, they will trade the 3 for multiple picks to the highest bidder. And they will then take one of the 2-3 in the first round of this year’s draft.

- they will likely start Brisset in week 1 and hope to let the rookie have a learning, red shirt year.

Clearly, I’m reading the tea leaves and Mayo left all options open and could be playing poker with all of us. But my takeaway is that he is very mindful of the holes on this team and doesn’t see Maye (assuming Daniels goes at 2 and maybe even Maye does) as sufficiently better than the next 2-3 guys to warrant passing up on the chance to address at least one if not two of those holes.

At the very least, Mayo sent a clear message to the rest of the league that the Pats are open to a move. I could see them ultimately concluding that the offers they get will not be atractive enough to warrant the jump from Maye to whoever they ranked at 4-6 on the list. But if the Pats were sold on Maye, Mayo didn’t have to go there unless he just likes the misdirection game. And he doesn’t seem to be type. So my guess is that they will end up liking one of the offers enough to move out of 3, take a QB in the first round, most likely with their highest resulting first round pick, and address other needs with the rest of what they get back (whether this year or next or both).

Mayo also seems to be extremely high on Brisset. It’s hard to imagine Zappe being able to do enough in the summer and pre-season to change that calculus. I suppose the rookie QB could shine enough to move Brisset to the bench but it doesn’t feel that way as of now. Especially with all of the “long view” comments Mayo made and their total lack of “win now” offseason moves.

I don’t think it’s worth reading anything into Mayo’s statements. Since they have no idea who will be available at 3, they may as well keep their options open. And he certainly doesn’t need to “send a message” to other teams through the media. I’m sure any GM interested in moving up has already had discussions with Wolf discussing possible scenarios. This just comes off as more of Mayo’s off the cuff enthusiasm rather than any sort of real insight to what the Pats front office is thinking or a carefully crafted statement of what their true intentions are. Much like his “burn cash” and “add talented players” type statements.

I do think trading down and still taking a Penix/Nix would be the absolute worst possible outcome and hopefully that’s not their objective here.

Mayo may be learning quickly that "less is more" with the Boston media. Best not to make any pronouncements whatsoever and just keep it friendly but boring. Or, just do what Brad Stevens does and walk quietly but carry a big stick.

It's interesting to read other people's takeaways/POVs on Mayo's PC. My interpretation of his comments had me thinking the team is probably leaning toward selecting Drake Maye...but with a sense of "we'll have to see, lots of moving parts, I'm not telling you anything, but we're happy with where we are." My $$$ is on Drake Maye if he's there.

I'm going to put this out in the universe, mainly because I'm tired of the Maye/Daniels/McCarthy conjecture. Theres a guy on the roster who isn't listed in the poll and might be a Darkhorse candidate for QB. That's right. Canadas own, Nathan Rourke. He'll only be 26 when the season starts and after watching some tape is basically what you'd hope JJ McCarthy could be. I couldn't find anything he was bad at other than being undersized. Good arm, good pocket presence, reads the field well and has some sneaky mobility with great balance and escapability. The guy owned the CFL until he had a Lisfranc injury in 2022, missed half the season and still set records for passing. Am I missing something here? Could we draft MHJ and a Tackle and have the second coming of Kurt Warner?

Kurt Warner wasn’t a CFL QB

Performance in the CFL means almost nothing. There are probably fewer NFL caliber defenders in the CFL than in the SEC or BIG 10. The best QBs in the CFL are usually guys who aren’t even good enough to get a practice squad look or have washed out of the NFL after a tiny cup of coffee (like Jake Dolegala or Cody Fajardo).

Sorry Bowser. I was just trying to break up the monotony a little. I like JJ. Appreciate you guys humoring me. This time between free agency and the draft is killer.
