Used to have Peacock for free with Xfinity but that ended sometime last summer and I would have to pay for it.

I'll be watching because I'm going to my buddies house and one of my buddies that will also be there already has a subscription. Otherwise I probably wouldn't.

The Amazon and Peacock games (along with Sunday Ticket on YouTube TV) all have their bar/restaurant distribution handled by DirecTV. So if the bar has that service then they can put those games on their TVs via their regular set top boxes.

Of course if they have a different cable/satellite service then they’re out of luck. But a LOT of places have DirecTV due to them having Sunday Ticket forever.

Often if someone working there can’t find the game it’s because they don’t know how to search for it in the program guide. I had that happen at a hotel bar recently.
Ah, got it.

If you have a bar with a television that has an input for HDMI cable, and an electrical outlet, you can bring your Superbox S4 Pro to the bar, plug it in, and voila, the bar has it.

I can't stress this enough folks.

I’d be curious what you learn about this, or what others know. I have FiOS and am paying for Peacock. Wouldn’t be the first time I stupidly pissed money away, but if I did screw up I’d like to fix it going forward.
I'm going to call Verizon tomorrow. I definitely read somewhere that Fios customers get it and there was something about logging in with your Verizon credentials or something. It's possible the info was dated.

If I wasn't a Miami fan this would be a no brainer. I still may not watch, mostly because I don't think I'll like the outcome of the game. I just can't believe they're doing this for a playoff game. Doing it for regular season games once in a while is annoying. This is infuriating.

This is bullshit. There's absolutely no reason why a playoff game shouldn't be available without the need to order an additional service.

I kid, but the issue here is that streaming isn't really sustainable financially, cord cutters are hurting cable, etc. I'll note that there are also more playoff games than ever before with the extra WCs, and during the regular season we can see games in 5 different slots (plus extra Saturday / Thanksgiving games) without needing to have Sunday Ticket.

I suspect we are in a weird period and things will stabilize in the new few years with whatever a new model is as customers generally vote with their wallets. It's annoying but not really an outrage IMHO.

I called Verizon and they confirmed that Peacock isn't included with a Fios subscription.

I don't know about that one in particular but most of the chinese pirate boxes of that type are loaded with malware and spyware deep in the code. If you really wanted to go the pirate route, but one of the certified android devices (Chromecast, various other companies) and sideload apps, you can probably get a nice walkthrough via reddit and it would be safer.

A lot of them aren't even scams honestly:
https://www.tomsguide.com/news/thousands-of-android-tv-boxes-infected-with-dangerous-malware-linked-to-fraud

They just steal code from each other constantly so you end up with all this garbage in there. I would generally go with one of the play certified boxes personally if you go that route, they are cheaper, and it shouldn't take you too much time to add most or all of the functionality via apps you sideload and if you're careful you can avoid any concerns.

It’s surprising that there is a lot of outrage about this on social media. All we’ve been hearing for several years now is how much of a sucker you are if you’re still paying cable companies, everything can be streamed (legally or otherwise). The natural evolution of that cord cutting was always going to be each media conglomerate setting up their own streaming platform and negotiating exclusive content and pro sports is the big fish to go get exclusive rights for.

as “unthinkable” as it is that the NFL would put playoff games on subscription services, it was once unthinkable that MNF or other prime time games would ever go to paid cable (TNT, ESPN,NFLN exclusives)

it’s going to continue in this direction. People always talk about how great subscriptions are because you don’t need to pay hundreds of dollars per month for content you don’t want, you can pick and choose what content you want and find your subscription accordingly. Having NFL games exclusive to a streaming site isn’t any different than Netflix having their original content or Max owning the licensing rights to be the exclusive home of Friends (or whatever show you enjoy)

Pro sports, at the end of the day, isn’t any different than movies or tv series. It’s for-profit entertainment and exclusivity deals with networks who want to lock their content behind subscription paywalls is inevitable.

It IS completely different. Movies and tv shows don’t need to be viewed live
how is that different? Live events are behind paywalls all the time

it’s for profit entertainment. The fact that it’s live has nothing to do with anything.

I cant watch the Red Sox without paying for NESN. I cant watch the live NFL draft without paying for ESPN (although they broadcast some of it for the first time on network TV). I cant watch any big wrestling or MMA events without Pay Per View, cant watch the World Series of poker live without a subscription service, half the college football games are on exclusive channels you can only get through pricey sports packages (SEC network etc)

the “pay for exclusive live sports content“ has been a thing for a very long time. Paying for NESN through a package of channels with Comcast isn’t any different than paying for Peacock except you’re isolating the charge to one channel instead of “sports premium channels”

The only difference is it’s a major network doing this and not a regional one. But the message is clear, you want to watch every game, you need to have subscriptions to every service that owns a piece of the NFL pie. And that was always going to be the natural evolution from cord cutting. Instead of paying Comcast $100 and watch every game, you can pay Peacock 10, Hulu 10, NFL+ 10, NESN 30 and so forth.

The NFL is late to the party honestly. But the major networks will likely continue to do this as they lose more and more eyeballs from cord cutters

Not sure how long you have been with Xfinity, but if you've been with them over 7 years you are eligible for a "Platinum" level rewards membership. It's no charge, you just need to sign up and Peacock is one of the "perks".

I found this out via email from them, but you can check here:

https://www.xfinity.com/rewards
I'm an Xfinity customer but it appears that I don't qualify because I'm just a measly gold customer.

It was free, but now they want $2.99 a month extra for 12 months. After that, they'll presumably increase prices.
I'm going to call Verizon tomorrow. I definitely read somewhere that Fios customers get it and there was something about logging in with your Verizon credentials or something. It's possible the info was dated.

FIOS customers can get Peacock for free but that's the ad supported version and no, it does not include the Chiefs/Dolphins game which is premium content. So I won't be watching the game.

I don't like Miami but I detest the Chiefs more so I'll be rooting for the fish.

I’m stuck in a hotel and there’s no game on here. Don’t want to go through the hassle to watch on my phone.

I’ll watch the Bruins and check in on the NFL score. If it’s a close game, or the B’s don’t look good, maybe I’ll seek out a bar.

I was going to skip the game rather than pay for Peacock, but as it turns out we are visiting family this weekend, and they have it. (Although perhaps they don't get the premium content, we shall see I guess.)

The results are pretty definitive. People aren't paying for the cock if they don't already have it.
If watching players potentially freeze to death live on TV, including possibly Tyreek Hill, isn't worth $6 then I don't even know who you are anymore!

I pay top dollar for the cock. I will be tuning in and rooting hard for Reek to suffer frostbite and to see if McDaniel tries to vape more on the sidelines given that it will be impossible to tell whether its a cloud or just his breath.

Oh this is a cool great idea.
Thanks
Plus can skip commercials this way
Also may need to to put a paper covering over the bottom two inches of the tv I think they spoil the scores there

If you have an Amex, check your offers. I currently have 2 Peacock offers, 1 to reimburse $6/month for up to 3 months and another for $30 back on a $60/annual subscription.

Holy cow, NFLN has it on almost immediately after real time game end, at midnight, and again at 6 am eastern. I didn’t think they’d even get the rights to repeat it.I’ll DVR both in case there’s a messup or reschedule with the first one, which I’ve seen happen. This is great, thank you.

I have to say, Peacock has a ton of tv shows and movies. I haven't skimmed through its entire catalog, but it seems to be one of the better streaming services. We've had it for a long time -- wish I knew we had it.

Peacock also broadcasts the Tour de France in the US, so cycling fans might want to keep their subscriptions.

I was fine not watching it, will be interested in what the final ratings are. Baseline viewership is 20M - hasn’t been a wild card game below that in 17 years.

I would have been pissed if Tyreek, Tua, Mahomes or Kelce had a frostbitten finger fall off on live TV and I missed it though.

NBC's contract with the NFL goes through the 2033 season. So they will be doing this again next year.

All the contracts go through the 2033 season, in fact. It'll be the same for another decade.

One and done
I canceled my sub this AM.

I sub to too many streaming services, as is, I suspect until the next must C game, I will survive without Peacock.

Prime is next on the chopping block. They got little that appeals to me other than TNF, and season's over. Although I like their free shipping.

2 whole shows, wow
Well...no. I just listed two. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Sneaky Pete. Daisy Jones & the Six, The Boys. These are only some of the shows available there and include some of the most heralded series on "television." If you're not into it, obviously that's fine. Just offering a recommendation.

EDIT: You should also watch Jury Duty on there.

That and the whole free shipping plus 30 other ancillary benefits that some do / don’t like. Nobody gets Prime for the content but it doesn’t hurt. But, hey, what do I and hundreds of millions of Americans know?
Right. Video is an added benefit. I use the shipping regularly and the music daily.

You forgot Reacher. That's worth a year of Prime by itself!

But seriously, Prime does have some great content. Man In The High Castle was great as well.

No doubt they’ll will. At least for this month. We’ll see who sticks around longer than that. I used to work closely with a company that tracks that. Will be fascinating to see their data in a month or two.
I was actually incorrect upthread in that I had cancelled the cock a few months ago so I paid up, watched the game, then watched The Holdovers, then I cancelled again after this billing cycle. I wonder how many folks do something similar.

You can kind of see the value of exclusive live sporting events in isolation with this - its potentially worth a lot.

Yup. Even if, say, 20-30% of those who subscribed for the game stay with the sevice for a few months, it’s a big win for NBCU.

Sports is starting to drive streaming just like it did for cable over decades.
