Might make for a great topic. Mia got the attention but Akers was the engine. I don’t think the US establishes itself without her.
The USA was never going to be anything but the best at that time. Akers and Hamm could never exist and the next best players on the USA would be the legends. The development program that was/is the NCAA and the terrible funding, support for the women's game around the world meant the USA was going to win. Shit Canada with 1/10th population and terrible soccer weather was/is a contender, with almost entirely NCAAA trained players. Today the women's world cup is so much easier to win due to the poor support for women's sport in most of the world. At one time the USA really could never lose considering the built in advantages, but they created a template for success, that probably can't be equalled, but has made the sport somewhat competitive.. Most of these advantages are from having society that actually treats women as equals, and has elite women's sports at all levels. Title 9 and the its influence on the growth of women's sports around the world is one of the USA's greatest contributions to making the world a better place.

In the 16 games completed as of right now, of the 14 games with a winner, the losing sides in those 14 games scored a combined 1 goal (South Africa tallied in their 2-1 loss to Sweden).

Fantastic win for The Philippines. Heroic defending after they got the early goal.
Wow. The Kiwis beating Norway was a great surprise, but this one is a stunner.

All 4 squads in Group A will go into the final match with a chance to win the group. Should make for some great matches.

Not much to add here other than the Philippines victory over New Zealand was thoroughly entertaining. New Zealand being bigger and more physically imposing as well as the host team made the Philippines the underdog that was fun to root for.

And Olivia McDaniel was fantastic in goal.

Japan glides past Costa Rica while Spain trampled Zambia.

Really feel for Zambia. 16 of their players play in the Zambian league, which is barely semi-pro. The players haven’t been paid by their FA in 2 years. Their manager has been under investigation by the FA for sexual assault of players since September. From the Guardian:

“If he [Mwape] wants to sleep with someone, you have to say yes,” one player who did not want to be named told the Guardian. “It’s normal that the coach sleeps with the players in our team.”
The Zambian squad are fighting through all the very worst issues of women’s soccer. That they’re at the World Cup is an incredible achievement and hopefully gives the players a platform to demand better treatment. And that they get it. Banda is a great young striker. If she can lead a win over CR in the last match, that could reverberate loudly across African football.

Spain’s Alda Redondo (Playa) is a dead ringer for Tobin Heath (both in style of play and number and looks)

Anyone have any suggestions where might be a decent spot in Manhattan (preferably not to far from Chelsea) to watch the USWNT game tonight? I'm not going to show up an hour early to save space, so not looking for something so hardcore it'll fill up.

I like our wings vs their fullbacks. We win if this games stays out wide.

Rodman so close.

I can’t think of a player that can go from jog to top-speed-spring quicker than Rodman.

That’s exactly the central midfield control the US has been missing since Ertz went out. It’s this squads Achilles heel.

Lots of frantic possession, nothing in a dangerous area, poor service from the outside, and no great target. If they’re going to play like this they’ll need the corpse of Abby Wambach on the penalty spot.

Dutch are more physical, more aggressive, more committed to getting there first. They’re dictating and we’re reacting.
