Great play by Crawford. What is with the plate area in KC?

They have fast runners who pound the ball into the ground. Same reason SF grounds crew created a moat along the basepaths

Ah, now the commercials I won't miss...
Any wireless phone commercial, any Chevy commercial, any Fox TV show commercial. Might as well add "Dumb and Dumber II".

They could be down 3 runs in the middle innings.
Yea, I agree. Bumgarner gave you the best shot at putting up zeros at the start of the game. Who knows what the middle innings will look like.

Who'd have thought Hudson would be out of the game before Guthrie?  I mean, Guthrie has to be one of the worst pitchers to ever start a Game 7.  I'll have to look that one up.  He may have had a decent year this year, but he's been meh his entire career.

But they should have. If he had "40 pitches" in him, start him and see how long he can last. It only makes sense.

And if, as someone else pointed out last night, he fails because he hasn't pitched on such short rest, he puts the Giants in a crappy spot.  The game is tied after two innings.  If they get a lead here against Guthrie, I expect to see him for the middle innings on a short leash.  Everyone not named Strickland and maybe Machi will pitch tonight for SF.

They are in a crappy spot right now, already being into their pen.

It is the last game of the season. If he is pitching well, you leave him in. You could potentially get 7 strong out of Bumgarner.

SEVEN????

Dude, rethink it. Schilling was on ESPN all over today and while he suggested that he would have started Bumgarner as well, he gave him 4, 5 tops

I still hate that fucking commercial. What was it, 2007?

And wasn't it her father who was the DA?

Four or five innings gives them a chance to build a lead. Rather than potentially being behind by the time they bring him in.

1947 Dodgers started Hal Gregg, a guy who'd had a 5.87 era that year for a 70 ERA+ down from his career 82 ERA+ .  Guthrie's numbers are 96 ERA+ this year and 102 for his career.

Harrison for Texas in 2011, Wright for Cleveland in 1997 were pretty underwhelming.

Ground out to the mound and 2 ks ... we'll take that.

Now, get a run or 3, KC

The Giants need to score basically right now.  Yost isn't going to fuck around -- Herrera is coming in if Guthrie gets in trouble in the 4th.

Didn't Randy Johnson go 3 IP in relief in the playoffs for the '95 Mariners?

Edit: Just looked it up, he did.  And he went 1.1 IP in 2001 Game 7 (and got the win!) on no rest after pitching 7 IP in Game 6.

Hudson is no spring chicken and isnt exactly spectacular away from Pac Bell.

Not sure I agree.  Its a tie game and they have all their arms behind Affeldt including Bumgarner if need be.  Burning an ineffective Bumgarner is pretty much their worst case scenario.

Guthrie, regardless of that half-inning, is fools gold and anyone who saw him with Baltimore knows it.

Other than the Sox has there in recent memory been a more enjoyable run to watch than the Royals here? I can't think of a single one. I love this team.

Randy was superhuman, however.

The other thing Schilling said was that, in 2001, he and RJ were at a different stage of their careers. Bumgarner's never thrown this many innings in a season. If something gores physically awry experimenting, Schill said, it could hurt a franchise longer than one game
