Trade discussions going on around the league that would really excite people. We will see how many actually happen. I predict more action than we are used to seeing
This made me laugh out loud. It’s gonna happen guys...
Yeah that report seemed very curious, especially with how well the offense has been and how bad the defense has been.Jay Glazer reports that the Patriots are offering high picks for a premium wide receiver.
The only receiver under 30 they have meaningful control over past this year is Gordon, who is an RFA.Yeah that report seemed very curious, especially with how well the offense has been and how bad the defense has been.
I am interested to see more information about this. I guess most of it has to do with the future of the WR position (i.e., past 2018).
Yeah, I knew the status of control after 2018. That is why I am curious about the report. I wasn't aware of any good young WRs being on the trade block. The only receiver under 30 they have meaningful control over past this year is Gordon, who is an RFA.
Dorsett and Hogan are FA, Edelman will be 33, and Patterson is a WR in name only.
Moreover, Gronk is year to year from a retirement perspective, and you’ve got nothing behind him on the TE depth chart in terms of a reliable pass catcher (Hollister can’t stay on the field).
Yeah, just putting more meat on the bone, I got youYeah, I knew the status of control after 2018. That is why I am curious about the report. I wasn't aware of any good young WRs being on the trade block.
Should be interesting to see what they do.
Edit: The young WR part was my emphasis. The report was just that the Pats are interested in a "premium wide receiver". There was no mention of age.
But as illustrated by MM's post. The issue is the Pats don't have many WR <30 under control for future seasons.
Given Glazer's TB ties this says to me they made a run at Mike Evans.Jay Glazer reports that the Patriots are offering high picks for a premium wide receiver.
Thanks, it definitely helped.Yeah, just putting more meat on the bone, I got you
Does Desean Jackson still qualify as a premium wide receiver? He could probably be had relatively cheaply, and would provide a solid deep option and special teams returner.Given Glazer's TB ties this says to me they made a run at Mike Evans.
I thought the Glazer report was that the Patriots were offering "high draft choices for a premium WR".Does Desean Jackson still qualify as a premium wide receiver? He could probably be had relatively cheaply, and would provide a solid deep option and special teams returner.
I’d take him if the price were right.
I'm sure they'd prefer younger, but not sure how many young premium wide receivers are realistically available.I think they'll be targeting someone younger if they go WR.
I don't think he was ever a premium WR. He's a one trick pony -- an older / worse version of the guy we traded just 6-7 months ago.Does Desean Jackson still qualify as a premium wide receiver? Yeah, pretty sure the numbers don't work for either team in regards to Evans--wouldn't he be a dead cap hit of $20M for TB?Mike Evans just signed a big contract this offseason. Don’t think TB even considers trading him and don’t know how they’d do it even if they wanted to.
It wouldn’t be a rental, I’d expect.I just can’t get over the difficulty in someone coming in at WR at this point and being that much of a different maker this season. That would be why you’d do this now, right? Then why pay such a high price (a “high draft choice”)? It doesn’t make sense.
But that’s my point. Why do it now then instead of the off-season?It wouldn’t be a rental, I’d expect.
He could still potentially help this season. Could be monetary reasons as well. But that’s my point. Why do it now then instead of the off-season?
He's got the prorated remainder of $10.625 MM in guaranteed salary for this year; I imagine they'd need that altered somehow (by CLE or renegotiated deal) to make this work.Jeff Howe reporting Pats having internal discussions on a Jamie Collins deal.
So, basically what it says in the posts just before yours? On Jamie Collins:
"Linebacker Jamie Collins of the Cleveland Browns has been discussed in trade talks with the New England Patriots. Patriots traded Collins to the Browns just two years ago. (Jeff Howe, The Athletic)"
Basically, but not exactly. DrewDawg said that Howe reported that the Pats were having "internal discussions" regarding Collins. So I thought that actually citing a report would add to the conversation. The link I cited didn't speak of "internal discussions" but seemed to imply that the Pats and Browns have actually talked about Collins. So, basically what it says in the posts just before yours?
I think SI wrote it up incorrectly.Basically, but not exactly. DrewDawg said that Howe reported that the Pats were having "internal discussions" regarding Collins. If that bothers you that I posted that, oh well.
Yeah you could be right. From a Pats' perspective, Collins certainly provides athleticism at LB but the very reasons they let him go...well...those are still present, aren't they?I think SI wrote it up incorrectly.
Your link from SI is referencing back to the Jeff Howe piece which says only that the Pats have discussed it internally. Initially, Howe was not reporting the Pats and Browns have talked, just that the Pats FO has talked about it, unless the link in The Athletic has been updated since my post.
Anyway, with the Browns carnage today, I can't imagine they're making trades, unless it was all part of the bloodletting--new coach, get some draft picks, etc.
Players sometimes leave and learn.Yeah you could be right. From a Pats' perspective, Collins certainly provides athleticism at LB but the very reasons they let him go...well...those are still present, aren't they?

I disagree. Before today, Dorsey and Jackson were equals, both reporting to Haslam. That's over now and Dorsey won. If there are players that Hue defended but Dorsey didn't like, they could very well be gone. I don't know if Collins is in that camp or not, but Sashi Brown was the one who traded for and extended Collins, so Dorsey isn't going to have any loyalty to him.Anyway, with the Browns carnage today, I can't imagine they're making trades, unless it was all part of the bloodletting--new coach, get some draft picks, etc.
I think the football issues with Collins were overblown. He played 94% of snaps in the seven games he was active for in 2016, and it was higher before he missed a game with a hip injury. Just because they didn't want to re-sign him for what he was going to get paid doesn't mean they don't think he was a good player.Yeah you could be right. From a Pats' perspective, Collins certainly provides athleticism at LB but the very reasons they let him go...well...those are still present, aren't they?
Show me how it works, I’ll gladly eat my humble pie. He’s owed pretty much all the remaining cap space and would leave no room for a street guy in an emergency if someone goes down. I find it difficult to believe Cleveland would eat money enough for a price we’d be willing to pay or that he would restructure. Which brings nothing about the reason they traded him to begin with. It wasn’t exactly a Chung situation who they admitted to using incorrectly; BB has no use for guys that play hero ball and don’t stick to their assignments. I’m gonna go ahead and assume he didn’t learn that in Cleveland. I never said it was unpossible, chances of things are always above 0%...that doesn’t disqualify it as click bait however. Can't be. PP said it was unpossible.
This isn't really true. He held Owen Daniels to 2 TD catches in the 2015 AFCCG.Jamie Collins would improve the Patriots' linebackers corps, but I think his coverage skills are much worse than his athleticism would indicate. Dude routinely got killed by RBs out of the backfield, especially on wheel routes, and I don't remember him being all that effective against TEs either. I like him as a player, but I think he was at his best when blitzing and rushing the passer here. Count me out for that salary, even if the picks going back aren't much. Don't think he's the kind of player this team needs.
