With Boldin and Crabtree in the mix, and two games a year against the Seahawks, Edelman going to SF would ensure a big drop in his catches.  That might be the healthiest outcome for him, though -- he took a beating last year. The chance to play for his hometown team, which will be in the mix for the SB again next year, has got to be pretty tempting.

This (right after the Talib signing) is currently my favorite post of the entire thread.

I think a 5th for Sproles is WAY too much for a guy who was on the verge of being cut just 24 hours before hand.

I do think he'll be a nightmare in the Kelly offense and also helps upgrade the poor eagles return game.
Honestly though I think he'll line up in the slot as much as in the backfield. Chris Polk and Brown are pretty damn solid depth at RB for Philly already and despite the very heavy workload for McCoy and the likely need to move some carries around I'm not sure it'll be to Sproles as a runner.

The Eagles Offense has added Sproles and Maclin and still has Jackson, McCoy, Cooper, Ertz Cellek and Casey. That's a lot of toys for Chip. Should be fun. They have lost Jason Avant.
I'll take Sproles over Avant in the slot every day, package plays with a Run to McCoy, bubble screen to Jackson and a short slant to Sproles and the like are already being dreamed up.

As for the releasing Casey, I think it's odd how little they used him considering he was such a major target for them last year but it may have been due to the emergence of Ertz as a rookie, and rookie TE who are good are not very common.
The Eagles are still WAY under the cap, so I'd be very surprised if Casey were cut.

The eagles appear to think they are ok at CB, despite showing interest in Revis, they now have 4 solidish corners, and Boykin is potentially more than solid.
They do still need another safety but Jenkins is a big upgrade to the poo poo platter.

The offense looks pretty stacked, depth on the line and youth is all they might need. The Defence still needs a LOT of help.
A starting safety is the glaring hole, but they need more pass rushing help, probably a nose tackle and some depth at linebacker generally.

If Wilfork is cut, the Eagles might be a very good fit. He, Fletcher Cox and Thornton will be very tough vs the run, and switching curry for Thornton for passing situations helps there too. That would be a very interesting DL

Time to make a call in the next day or two on Edelman. Vet WR is a need and they'll start to come off the board

Agreed. Have to wonder if they could fit Edelman AND Smith. Between the two Brady could have a surefire target every play.

I'd rather not double up on the short, shifty WR's.  One slot type and a taller more physical option (Avant or Lafell) would be great.

Agreed. Big redzone targets is what this offense was lacking last year.

In that case, who are the best options on the market that can fit in the budget?

I think LaFell is their best option for this role. 6'3", 36" Vertical. Should be pretty good value since he's never had a season over 50 catches or 700 yards.

I think they grab either Edelman or Steve Smith, but I don't see both coming in when you already have Amendola and Boyce on the roster.

edit: Also this depends a lot on Dobson's health and Thompkins progression. Two guys that weren't on the field together very often last year.

Your three best RZ targets all have question marks on either their availability or effectiveness for next year. Dobson and Gronk both are health concerns, while Thompkins seemed to take a step back towards the end of the year.

If both Dobson and Gronk were 100% healthy maybe you could go after Smith and Edelman but I think you need to add another big guy so that you don't have the same problem you ran into last year. Throwing jump balls to Amendola at the end of the game because you have no other options.

Would you take a flier on Kenny Britt? I think he could offer some needed size in the redzone, but I don't know if the baggage that comes with him would be worth it, even if he signed for peanuts.

I've loved Britt for years yet he continues to under perform while being a complete disaster off the field. He doesn't seem like the same player post ACL tear while continuing to have the same red flags. He is only 25 so this is the type of guy I'd expect the Pats to look at, value pick - Rutgers guy, but I'd think he's option E, F, G (or lower) and they'll eventually pass on him.

Damn would have been a nice pickup as a nickel LB / SS

Edit: but not at that contract

Really? That's about what I expected. I doubt the guaranteed money is over $7M, which makes it an easily handled cap number for the first three years. Good signing by the Titans.

Yeah depends on how the $ are distributed. But that is money that I would earmark for a guy like Edelman (with a little increase - maybe 4/24).

I thought Woodyard would get at max 3 mil per. 4 is a little bit of an overpay, especially for Tennessee who already has Zach Brown as a cover LB. Don't see where WW fits on that squad.

We can't see the numbers, but I would guess it will end up being a pretty fair contract. However, with the seemingly pending addition of Browner, Woodyard may have come a bit less of a need and Bill may be looking to spend it on other resources like a pass rush or the offense.

Henry Melton visiting SEA today.  Talk about the rich getting potentially richer.  They could already push the pocket from DE better than anyone, adding a penetrating DL would almost be unfair.

Really wish NE would take a look at Melton.  He and Golden Tate are going to be the two best FA signings this offseason.

I was qualifying it to FA's not players that were cut.  Obviously Revis is arguably the best FA acquisition.

Are you serious?  The same team that still has Dennard on its roster is not going to look at someone who was arrested for public intoxication?

Reiss / Schefter

On Julian Edelman: Schefter predicts the receiver market will start playing itself out today. So where do the Patriots stand with Edelman, who is visiting the 49ers?

“[The Patriots are] trying to re-sign Julian Edelman, they want him back. But they want him back at a price and a number they have in mind,” Schefter said. “The Patriots have been pretty responsible and pretty thoughtful of the marketplace for certain players. So, they’ve given Julian Edelman an offer. Clearly, it’s not to his satisfaction. So it’s up to him to play this game, which isn’t really a game, it’s his business, to go out there to see, does San Francisco or another team value me more than New England? And if they do, how much more, and is it worth it to me to move? That’s what we’re going to find out today.

“I know [the 49ers are] interested. I spoke to them. We’ll see what happens with Julian Edelman there.”

Splitting hairs here, but when he was cut he did become a FA.

Spikes visiting Buffalo

As much as I think it is the right decision for the Pats to move on, I don't look forward to facing him twice a year (well, at least not in running situations).

Also reports that Buffalo will move Kiko Alonso from MLB to WLB. Would make sense if they're doing it for Spikes.

Alonso was a beast last year as a rookie so I'm not sure I'd mess with that but he's a hell of an athlete.

Assuming a healthy offense, Spikes' presence would presumably dictate a hurry-up passing attack, and it isn't hard to guess where Gronkowski's patterns might be headed.

Spikes covering Gronkowski is my happy thought for the afternoon.

Yes, I know the route thing is 95 billion times more complex than my first paragraph implies. Just let me enjoy the idea for a moment.

Get Spikes moving side to side as a MLB and you can start to expose him.

Kid's got fantastic downhill speed, but he isn't in any rush to get to the edges.

Again, no clue if this guy has any real insight or not. He did "call" the Browner "signing" yearly last night.

For all we know, that guy could be one of us

Free-agent defensive tackle Letroy Guion has visited with the New England Patriots, as first reported by Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Guion was featured as one of the team's "projected targets" in our "free-agent fit" series. He has spent his seven-year career with the Vikings, the past two of which he emerged in a starting role. In those two years, Guion's position coach was Brendan Daly, who is now in his first year on the Patriots' staff.

Steve Smith is apparently going to the Ravens on a three year deal, per Schefter.  That takes one major potential player out of the Edelman market.  I think this might be a situation in which there are more mid-market WRs out there than teams willing to give out sizeable deals, which bodes well for us.

Guys still out there:

Edelman
Nicks
Avant
Austin
Sanders
LaFell
Holmes
Moore
James Jones
