BB has a message for the haters

So why, Belichick seemed to be asking, is everyone expecting a finished product at this point?

Touching on how teams evolve over the course of the year, Belichick went on for six minutes and 45 seconds at the end of his day-after-game conference call, capping things off with sarcasm when he said, “I mean, I don’t know, maybe I just can’t figure it out. It’s incomprehensible to me how anybody could think a team that’s practiced for six months and played 19 regular-season and postseason games and had triple-digit practices; five months later, after not playing the game, after having a fraction of that type of experience could be anywhere close to the level of execution that they were five months before that.

“I mean, it’s impossible in my view. So each year, you start all over again. You build your team over the course of the year through practice repetitions, preseason and regular-season games, through the evolving of your scheme. That’s why each year is different and unique.

“But I understand I’m in the minority. Most other people don’t see it that way, which is OK. That’s the way I see it.”

Not sure what the question was, but BB responded with "Well, we prefer to win" then a disdainful little shake of head.

This is his 18th season as HC of the NEP, and yet, shit like this still happens

Q: Do you know if Chris Hogan avoided a serious injury yesterday that would threaten his season? Do you have that information?

BB: No. When we give our injury report next week, we'll include all the players on it that need to be included on it, like we always do. So, you can be sure that anybody that should be listed on the injury report will be. I don't know which players those will be, but that's what the injury report is for.

Who is the reporter that asked that? That was an amazing segue. Of course, BB handled it perfectly.

On tying Tom Landry for third most wins as a head coach:

"It's flattering but I don't think that's the story tonight. The story is what our team did and how our team performed. To win games in this league, you need great players, and I've been fortunate to have a lot of great players, a lot of great coaches and a great staff. That's really what it's about. The players are the ones who deserve the credit, they're the ones who go out there and make the plays and they did it tonight."

I don't have the exact quote but today's conference call was actually pretty good and he was in a good mood. He got asked a question about the Gronk catch/no catch. It was actually a pretty good question -- about the extent to which he takes the player's report into account with respect to whether he challenges or not. But the interesting part of the answer was that he brought up one of his old favorites -- goal line or pylon cameras. He mentioned how it didn't change the game last night but that if you have a play like that at the end of a game it is important to get it right. After which he added, in a way so dry that it took me a while to realize that it was a dig, "maybe the league can figure out a way to finance that."

DDB, you mentioned this happened on today's conference call -- do the Pats post the recordings of these calls anywhere?

I'm not DDB, but I'm a regular (darned near religious) reader of BB transcripts. They're here, after every game, and also generally Monday and Tuesday as well, maybe some other days - I'm sure there's a pattern.

When asked why he didn't take out Brady once the game got "out of hand": “It’s easy for you to sit there and say the game’s out of hand. If you watch games in the National Football League, a lot can change in a hurry.”

The cradle of the game.

He also answered the same question with an instant classic deadpan:

“What on the kneel-downs? I mean, what difference does it make?”

Q: How important was it to establish the running game given some of the shots that Tom Brady was taking?

BB: It's always good to run the ball. It's good to throw it. It's good to score points.

An absolute classic from the Dec 4 presser. Check out the closing line!

Q: What do you jet sweeps help bring to your offense?

BB: We have a lot of different plays in our offense. Some plays are all-purpose plays. Some plays are more specific towards a certain defense. Plays will complement each other, so kind of the feeling of if they're stopping one play then they won't be able to stop another play type of thing. There are a lot of different things that go into game planning, and play design and play calling. Josh [McDaniels] and the offensive staff do a great job of that and will continue to do that. Each play has a purpose and has some type of a relationship to other plays, other formations or other things that are in the game plan. Those are things we do weekly based on all of the things that go into the game plan - what we're trying to do, and other plays, and complementary formations and plays, and so forth that we're running. That's really about the same answer to any play in our offense.

Question to Bill Belichick: "With all you have accomplished in your coaching career, what is left that you still want to accomplish?" Belichick's answer: "I'd like to go out and have a good practice today. That would be at the top of the list right now."

Didn't he have pretty much the exact same response during training camp?

Huh. It just got retweeted other day by Schefter. But Twitter is probably messing with the feed algorithm and I didn’t pay attention to date.

It's been tweeted by a few people in the last couple of days and recently got picked up by /r/nfl. I think it's just so good that it's had staying / comeback power. Because it is an old quote, unless he repeated it recently.

Mike Reiss (I think): Is there any thought there about not leaving them any time (when Lewis scored with about one minute to go)?

BB: Well, I mean, you can't be too cute, you gotta score. I mean, I don't think you're gonna kneel the ball there. I guess you could. But you gotta score.

What were you thinking when you decided to go for it on a fourth-and-1?

“It was fourth-and-1. I thought we could get a yard.”

If you watch the whole press conference, he was actually way more solicitous of dumb questions than he usually is. I'm choosing to believe he was in a good mood. Hopefully, that means good practices this week. Even with the Guererro question while he was plainly annoyed, he was pretty measured and less snarky than usual, and did make a comment about how the Guererro report was unsourced (which actually is a response in a way).

A pretty quintessential sequence of responses by BB to questions about Harrison.
One line of thinking is that the New England Patriots signed free-agent outside linebacker James Harrison, in part, to gain Pittsburgh Steelers-based intelligence that could help the team. Bill Belichick didn't care to engage that topic.

"We're playing the Jets this week. I don't even know what that has to do with it," he said in his Wednesday morning news conference. "Maybe I'm missing something, I don't know."

Told it was specific to the Steelers, and a possible playoff matchup, Belichick repeated, "We're playing the Jets this week."

...

What are your thoughts on his career?

"Good," he replied.

...

Asked how important that meeting was prior to signing Harrison, Belichick said, "It's always good to meet somebody."

It's hard to tell voices, but I think the intelligence question may have been Reiss, which would be surprising.
