Cooks now on pace for 104 receptions, 1,808 yards and 4td's.
If Edelman and Gordon perform I’ll be happy for his absence. It was only two plays but his heinous Super Bowl performance was as bad as it gets and it would have made me sick to look at him all season.

It’s really odd now watching top NFL teams and feeling like they’d blow us out. I’m not sure I’d take ten points against the Rams or Chiefs right now.

Any guesses on what the line will be in 3 weeks, at home v Chiefs?

We all can thank Sean McVay for striking a death blow against Peter King’s otherwise inevitable effort to get Jeff Fisher’s ass into Canton. Under Fisher, Goff was on the trash heap.

I’m more Nicky than Ace, just taller and with slightly less blow, so I won’t guess the lines, especially because 3 weeks is forever in the NFL, but around 9 seems reasonable if the game was Sunday.

The Chiefs are currently four-point favorites in Denver. I’d say a line in Foxboro would be Pats -3. There has to be a pretty massive talent gap for a team to be a nine-point home dog.

Haha then, like I said, I suck at guessing lines. I’d put my liver and a kidney on Chiefs +3 at Foxboro.

Horrendous? Heinous?? Are you talking about Cooks SB performance or the Pats defense? Cooks only had 2 plays and got injured. Not his fault.. @jedZeeppelin @Jed Zeppelin

He took a sweep at the goal line on 3rd down and instead of running one yard to either side, he tried to hurdle a defender, costing them 7 points. He then caught a wide open pass, ran around in a circle for no reason and got decked instead of extending the play for a bigger gain in the open field. So yeah, 2 horrendous plays that were his fault. Kindly do let me know where I said anything about the defense either way.

It's easy to feel like that right now, given how the Patriots are playing. But when they start firing on all cylinders, they'll look as good as any team in football. Let's just hope they start firing on all cylinders....

The marginalization of defense plays right into our hands. See you guys in Atlanta!

The defense firing on all cylinders would be like a golf cart performing at its max speed. I think if the offense plays to potential and everyone is on the field the defense will look better because they will have the lead and usually better field position, like last year, but it’s smoke and mirrors.

Yup. Our hope for the defense is basically bend but don't break and hopefully run into a lucky turnover or two. They're never going to take control of a game - just don't have the talent. As always, the offense needs to do the heavy lifting. They don't have the horses right now but the hope is that Michel emerges, Edelman is back to his 2016 form, and Gordon can provide some playmaking on the outside. If that happens, you can put the Pats against anyone in a shootout.

Cooks caught 65 passes for 1,082 yards and 7 TDs; plus he drew 13 DPI calls for 266 yards. You can argue all day about the pros and cons of trading him, but he was a very good player for the Patriots last season.

Those 65 catches did come on 114 targets though, a 57% catch rate.
For comparison, he was at 68% in NO, and is at 79% (early SSS) this year.
He was fine and served his role, but he wasn't crucial. The offense sucked in Miami with Gronk out, and the offense was pretty ok after he left the Super Bowl.

I'm not surprised his catch-rate was 10 percent higher when he was playing on an offense with more weapons, inside a dome, and catching passes from the most accurate passer in the history of the game. I understand that he was frustrating at times and wasn't always consistent week-to-week on his production, but I thought he caught a lot of shit on this board despite the numbers he put up.

True ... but the offense was OK after Gronk left in the AFCCG, in large part because Cooks went off in that game with 100 yards receiving and another 68 in drawn penalties. That said, I liked the trade to get a first for him rather than give him a first-tier-receiver contract, though it clearly made the 2018 team worse.

The real calculus is Cooks in 2018 plus a 2020 third as a comp pick, versus a 2018 first-rounder. Which makes it sound a lot closer.

I liked the trade at the time too... though nobody knew Edelman was going to get suspended back then.

Not really. That's around pick 100 or later - the hit rate is pretty small at that point. (The Patriots also gave up a fourth, got a sixth back, and saved $8.5 MM FWIW)

Comp picks are not guaranteed. For example, if the Pats kept Cooks for the year and let him go, but then signed a similarly priced free agent of their own, no comp pick is awarded.

Tyler Eifert just Gordon Hayward himself.

Don’t watch the replay.

That’s my only warning.
