Let's break out the Patriots-related rumors from today into a separate thread.


I've mentioned on BST a source telling me that, having been around the team for years, they've seen how players are treated just before being dealt. That, the source said, was how it felt with Gronk at start of '17.

Mods--could you take all those posts out of the NFL transactions thread?

I do not know. Just pointing out that, given the contract, the tug-of-war this offseason, etc. this would be stunning but there have been signals.

I just want to state that a year ago at this time - coming off the SB win, Gronk having missed most of the year with his back issue, etc. - I think a ton of us were very doubtful he'd ever be the same guy. Now a year later they got a great year out of him, but he only has so many elite years left. While I'd prefer he spend those years with the last remaining years of Brady, the Pats clearly are committed to the long run and life after TB12. With that in mind, I don't hate the idea of a trade. It sucks but if it can help them be good even longer then so be it.

a buddy just texted me that PFT reporting that the Pats are in talks to trade Gronk to Dallas for Sean Lee and a 6th round pick in 2019.


I can't tell if hes fucking with me.

I suppose it would be easy enough to check

Gronk to the Chargers? They lost their TE to a knee and haven't brought Gates back. Gronk in LA would seem a natural

This is sickening, the return has to be huge. If it’s a 2019, 2020 2nd round picks, I’ll watch the 49ers.

Donald, the best defensive player in the league, is in a much earlier stage of his career than Gronk ... the contract thing is a coincidence, but they're not equal players at this point.

Correct. Although I guess the counter would be that if he flirts with retirement every year you don't know if you'll actually get 2019. Donald would be one of the few fair returns based on talent. But he wants a new long-term deal right this instant and NE doesn't have the cap space to give it to him.

If BB gives another sweetheart deal to the 49ers (i.e. Gronk for anything less than a defensive star and/or some future first or at least seconds that can turn into firsts) he better being getting ownership interest in the franchise.

First, this means nothing. Only that there is uncertainty, and they're going to wait for news (or no news) in order to settle on new odds.

Second, "Vegas", as a monolithic entity, hasn't pulled anything. One or two select sportsbooks may have pulled the odds (I don't know), but you can still easily bet on Patriots futures in many places.

I was specifically pointing out any other trade with the 49ers if it is a “light” return again should come with something extra for BB.

Okay, but there was still a tease from the Reddit user who the tipped Edelman suspension. So the Internet ran wild and turned it into a non-existent Gronk trade. But could there still be something else there?

It was just a game thread post. I wasn’t annoyed.
I tried to respond a post and just make a comment based on the Pats most recent trade with the franchise mentioned. It was made in jest and obviously fell flat. My bad.
