Don’t look now but for all the mocking of the Mavericks roster construction and bringing in Kyrie….Dallas has won 14 of 16 as the role players are fitting in perfectly around Luka and Kyrie. Their two-headed big of Lively Danny is the best way to describe it and it’s been a super productive position. Don’t sleep on this team come playoff time is all I’m saying.
The lousy defense of those two in a series in which the other team actually targets them puts a really hard ceiling on Dallas. How often do teams make deep playoff runs when their two best players are defensive liabilities? I've been down on the Clippers most of the year (and they've been perfectly average for 2 months now), but assuming health, I'd still take them over the Mavs in round 1.

I don’t think Kyrie’s defense is a liability at all. Luka should have more energy to expend by not having to carry the entire offensive load but that didn’t seem to pan out last year. I think overall they are pretty average defensively with one of the most explosive offenses….that’s how they’ve won 14 of 16. They are peaking at the right time unlike say the Clippers whose came a little too early.

They're definitely peaking at the right time (and they are right in the middle of the league in defensive rating), but I'll believe Luka is going to expend energy on defense when I see it. The vibes are real good with them right now, but this feels very much like a regular season team to me.

And I don't know what's more unexpected with them - that they are 16th in defensive rating (great) or just 9th in offensive rating (right between the Knicks and Hawks, lower you'd think).

Before this current streak, they lost three in a row - to BOS (by 28), to PHI (without Embiid), and to IND (by 17). Since then they have beaten: MIA, DET, CHI, GSW (2x), DEN (on the insane Kyrie lefty hook shot and after Murray missed a pull-up jumper he normally makes like 85% of the time IMO), SAS, UT (2x), SAC (2x and 2nd game is when Monk got hurt), HOU (2x), and ATL. Not exactly murderers wow.

They lost to OKC and GSW.

If Luka can get to acceptable on defense, then I'd like their chances better and maybe he will in the playoffs but if he doesn't, it's going to be a tall order to beat one of the top 4 (or 5 if DAL makes it to the 4 seed) in the WC.

Good for IT.

Love agent statements.
The Sun really need that Vet presence in the locker room
GM/Coach/Agent-speak is so funny sometimes. I’m a big fan of it. Lol “veteran presence” on an already veteran-laden team. One time I’d love to hear “Well there was an open roster spot, obv IT can’t play anymore but hey it’s a good match for Phoenix to do one of the top agency a solid and get our guy back in the league. Maybe one day we can help them out too wink wink.”

Yeah, they don't really need a veteran presence. Though, and I know some are bigger on KD than I, frankly IT is probably the best leader and most successful (team-wise) guy in the room, too.

yeah, I know KD won titles but he was about the fifth most important voice on those teams (if that).

So it may not be zero truth to it - someone there needs to get guys playing together and it hasn't happened to date.

I love ripping Booker and KD as much as the next guy, but this doesn't quite track. Even if we totally discount KD's warrior years, he still got to 4 WC finals with OKC (and one trip to the finals), and Booker got to the finals as well. I love IT, but his only trips to the playoffs were 2015-2017 with Boston. Two first round exits and an EC finals that ended with IT on the bench, getting pasted by Cleveland.

Maybe he's bringing some good vibes and a heavy dose of "don't take anything for granted," but he's not bringing anything to the table in terms of team success that they don't already have.

Clippers seem to be righting the ship.

Celtics first quarter tonight suddenly doesn't seem so bad.

Clippers 35, Suns 4 was a real score with 1:30 left in the 1st. Never seen that one before.
No Kawhi, no Harden, and Phoenix might need this game in order to avoid the play in (their last three are road games against the Clippers, Kings and Wolves). Phoenix really has a habit of totally disappearing in giant games from time to time.

No Anthony Davis, Lakers trying to keep it close with the Warriors. Warriors up by 8 early in the 4th quarter.

Also, Suns making it a game. Outscored the Clippers by 17 in the 3rd quarter, now down by 13 with 8 minutes left.

Suns, Lakers and Warriors currently in the play in, not controlling their own destiny. At least one of those teams will miss the playoffs entirely, assuming the Pelicans can keep their heads above water. Amazingly, the Pelicans' final three games are all against teams in the play in (@Sac, @GS and home against LAL).

Bullet dodged for sure with the Achilles. Calf strain is about 2 weeks of recovery usually.
It may be 2 weeks to recover but he is susceptible to doing it again as he just did last night. Those calves are tricky bc they can feel 100% then just blow again. Going full throttle in a playoff game is only going to increase the risk.

Exactly. Isn't that what happened to KD? Came back too quickly and then blew out his Achilles?

That’s the thing….nobody thought he rushed back. Even though the discomfort subsides there is still a lingering weakness that caused the strain to begin with. It seems like the Achilles tendon is similar to the UCL in a pitcher. Calf strain = Forearm strain

Yep, KD definitely didn't rush back. I thought he was out like a month with the calf strain before returning in the finals, and then blowing out the achilles.

From @DrJesseMorse on X (I think of DRS whenever there is an injury, RIP)

Giannis Antetokounmpo

Suffers in acute left lower leg injury here jogging up the court

Initially here are the possibilities for what he is dealing with:

1. Calf/Gastrocnemius cramp
2. Gastrocnemius strain
3. Soleus strain
4. Plantaris tear
5. Achilles tear

These are in order of likelihood.

Both Woj & Shams just confirmed that it is indeed a calf strain, so let’s discuss the possibilities.

The calf is made up of 2 different muscles: gastrocnemius & soleus.

The gastrocnemius muscle, which is on the outside & more common. This is responsible for propulsion and has 2 heads, medial & lateral.

The medial proximal head has poor blood supply and that is most commonly where it strains. Although it can be on either head.

The soleus muscle is a deeper muscle and is much less commonly strained. This is responsible for keeping us upright.

Calf muscles are notoriously slow healing and reinjure at a higher rate (think Joe Burrow in early 2023).

There are 3 grades:

Grade 1 - mild strain, could return in 2-3 weeks

Grade 2 - moderate strain, much more concerning, take 4-6 weeks to return

Grade 3 - rare, season-ending

Below I have attached an ultrasound photo of an NBA player I evaluated with a soleus strain. That was a grade 1 because you can see the ‘structure’ of the muscle still really well.

I personally prefer to be aggressive with these and inject PRP, or ideally stem cells in these to speed up recovery, prevent easy reinjury, and deliver potent growth factors right where the body needs it.

With the way, he was walking towards the locker room so thankfully an injury to his Achilles is much less likely.

I expect them to get an MRI on both his calf as well as his Achilles but they already likely have a good idea of what’s going on by exam & ultrasound, which is very sensitive.

Timing note: NBA Playoffs begin April 20. So, that 2 or 2-3 week timeline does likely impact the Bucks opening series, but we're into the range where a. the actual severity of the injury b. how Giannis responds and c. these guys are superhuman all impact whether it really matters or not...

Yeah, I follow Jesse Morse too for fantasy related stuff, and while his ortho-related stuff might be sound, once he started posting about ozone therapy, avoiding seed oils, and other pseudoscientific quackery I got curious and turns out his MD is from a diploma mill in the Caribbean. Doesn’t necessarily mean his insights on sport injuries are useless, but certainly gives me pause that this guy is more salesman than anything else

Seems like a HIPAA violation to just post someone’s scans, even if it’s anonymous. He doesn’t own that health data. Gross.

I'll save @radsoxfan the trouble but he posted this in one of the Trevor Story threads; personally I don't know anything about Morse but I know that radsoxfan is someone to listen to.

First of all, I would implore people not to post Jesse Morse stuff from Twitter. He is a total fraud in every way, a complete charlatan. Just about the worst source of info out there.

Not this particular tweet, just in a general sense. Limited expertise, bizarro theories, sells unproven snake-oil type stuff. Sorry for the tangent.

Ty for posting. One of my follows shared it. To be fair, his take on this injury is similar to what I’ve heard from reputable doctors in the past which is why I posted. Bye bye Morse!

His post said: "Below I have attached an ultrasound photo of an NBA player I evaluated with a soleus strain."
Yeah probably not something a doctor should do but there are countless X-rays like this online with a simple search.

This particular post of his is pretty standard stuff and I agree generally about Giannis' injury situation. Achilles sounds like it's fine, all depends on the degree of the calf "strain" for a return to play.

There are situations when the calf strain is low and while the Achilles is OK, it seems to put it at more risk if you come back early (this happened with Durant's Achilles injury it sounds like).

He couldn't help throwing in some stem cell talk at the end, he's probably charging 5-10k out of pocket to gullible Floridians to heal their grade 1 calf strain. I'm hesitant to put too much into the Caribbean Medical school thing, as it's not really fair to the good docs that come out of there. But yeah, generally speaking there are probably worse docs and more sketchy docs from there compared to a US program.

He is most certainly an anti-vax, pseudoscience, salesman quack. Doesn't mean all of his tweets are automatically wrong, but there are definitely better more consistently accurate sources out there.

Fair enough, didn’t mean to paint them all in a bad light (I have a friend who went to one after getting shut out of med schools and she’s a serious person doing good things now) I just dug around a bit about the one he went to and it seems to have a poor reputation.

He sure does tweet authoritatively though. That, plus the MD at the end of his handle are enough to give him a big following.

Very authoritative, lots of non-traditional methods, definitely takes advantage of patients by pretending to be on the "cutting edge".

He's sort of a laughing stock of the legitimate orthopedic online community. But that stuff sells, plenty of people fall for it.

He’s also been dealing with achilles tendonitis in the same leg leading up to this. Whether it contributed to this, who knows, but he’s not in a great situation.

Agree seems higher risk than the average calf strain in the near term, just sort of reading the tea leaves on the updates for him all month.

Yeah there sure are gullible Floridians out there. He tried the 5-10k deal on my left calf but I’m too smart for that….so I negotiated a 2-for-1 and he’s gonna do both calves for 5k!

Lets just say....that Embiid and Giannis are both out/limited (either in games they are able to play or in performance during games).

Who's the 3rd "scariest" Star in the east they might face? Butler?
