That report just came out that it was a great year financially for Atlanta and they will be spenders. I don’t think anyone but maybe Yamamoto will be out or their price range.
With so much top talent locked up to steal contracts, they should absolutely be big spenders this FA. Lock in another top starter and go into next year with Strider, Fried, 2023 FA. Lineup is obviously more than fine.
Fried is a free agent after this season. I have a hard time seeing them signing a starter that could preclude their ability to keep Fried.
I don’t know. Fried said he was open to an extension last off-season but it didn’t get done. I wonder if the Braves are more willing to move on from him for some reason.

The point would be to maximize their 2024 chances and then have a potential replacement for Fried in 2025 if/when he leaves. Truthfully, they have so much excess value with Acuna, Albies, etc. that I’d sign Fried and a Nola type, if I were them. Load up and shed payroll later.
The Padres owner just died. Wonder how that changes the offseason.

Wow.... just coming here to post this. A guy that works for me grew up with him and still does (did) weekend work for him. Crazy.
The crazy spending to win a World Series makes a lot more sense if he had a serious health problem and knew he didn’t have much time left.
Passan saying today that the Rays are going to trade Glasnow this offseason.
It make sense to trade him because he is so awesome but a health risk in his walk year, but it also puts them in a tough spot. It really leaves them with no pitching.

I believe his salary jumps from like 5 million to 25 million next year. They have a lot of guys entering their arb years as well, they can’t afford Glasnow’s salary.
I get it. It makes sense. But with all their starters that got TJ this year, it’s pretty crushing to then trade Glasnow.
Yeah, it's a great example of how judging GM decisions is really difficult without all the details; they obviously weren't hugely successful (though they did generate a lot more excitement), but if the choice was a 10 year plan of rebuilding the farm system and building a long-term strong team (that the owner didn't expect to be alive to see) or taking a shot to win within a few years, I don't think they did the worst job of attempting the latter

I am not ready to give up on Soroka. And if one of those other pieces gives them anything, than I think its a win for the White Sox.
Sheemake has potential. Former first round pick and lost to Arcia in spring training. With Anderson gone, it’s a good get for the CWS.

White Sox went from 37 to 40 & the Braves went from 40 to 37.
All I know is I remember Nicky Lopez killing the Sox over the last few years. The entire KC lineup, honestly.
To be fair to the White Sox, Bummer probably isn't on the next White Sox contender, so a 5 for 1 deal makes plenty of sense alone. Just feels like a pupu platter to me with the Braves clearing out non-tender space.
Soroka is definitely the best lottery ticket of the bunch, but he looked really diminished this year, the injury history might have just killed a very promising career for him. I didn't realize Shuster AND Shewmake were first rounders - but that pedigree can mean little in the long run (hi Christian Arroyo).

Speaking of pitchers who are missing '24 with a shoulder injury...
Seems like a good job by the Royals buying low on a potential '25 rotation piece for a mediocre reliever.
It's strange, he was really good defensively and put up almost identical OPSs from 2019-2021 (.708/.702/.704) so he had a 5.5 bWAR in just 780 PAs and yeah a tempting trade candidate.
But then MIA traded for him and he has been awful, negative bWAR in both 2022 and 2023 (-0.7, -0.6). Cashman ended up getting Jose Trevino for that spot, he hasn't hit much but won the Platinum Glove in 2022 and seems like a fantastic clubhouse influence.

That is tough. He has been having some struggles, I hope this doesn’t add to it.
8 HRs in 89 career ABs in Yankee Stadium and still just 28, would love if Cashman could get him on a Bauers-type minor league deal and give him a shot in camp.
I know this is being discussed on the main board, too, but I feel like it's a bad sign for Seattle's offseason. Going to be another Very Jerry Winter, I fear. Ownership should really be opening the wallet a little wider, this is a team that's got a real opportunity.
(Side note: Jerry is the only GM to have successfully brought Mike Trout to the playoffs, so he has that going for him.)
