Washington
Miami won their first game on Sunday, so thankfully that storyline is done.

I'd love to see Nestor looking more like his old self, but I'll settle for more grinding ABs from the lineup that make opposing pitchers feel bad about themselves.

Three lefties going for Miami in this series, Luzardo, Puk and Weathers. Berti had good numbers against lefties last year (.804 OPS) and this is his revenge series against the Marlins, so expecting him to start at least twice.

This game was originally scheduled as an afternoon game but was changed to a 6 PM start last week because of the eclipse.

Wow. Volpe was way out in front of the changeup and then late on the fastball, so I figured he was in trouble. Nah, three run homer.

Do you let Nestor go for the shutout? Probably not worth it with his pitch count at 102.

Looks like a no.

I am way behind still (6-0 in the 4th, Soto just homered) and have not seen most of the comments above this yet, but when Berti bunted in the fourth and when Verdugo didn't try to score on the 50/50 SF, I thought those were both to make sure Soto got up that inning (theoretically you could IBB him but) and he put one into orbit (or at least it looked like it, somehow just 384). As we've said already, Soto/Judge reminds me of the Ortiz/Manny Sox, as an opponent you are always thinking about them coming around again in the order, how many batters until that and how can I survive that gauntlet each time.

And Volpe is incredible, he will be the leadoff hitter at some point but no reason to mess with success right now, he is definitely benefiting from hitting behind all the tough outs ahead of him at #5 or #6.

Volpe has now gotten screwed by this ump twice. He still looks awesome.
He looks incredible on both sides of the ball, that short hop in the hole, wow. And his strike zone decisions are incredible, even if as you say the ump punched him out twice on 3-2 balls outside the zone.

Amazing job by Nestor obviously, you could tell right from the first batter that he would be much better than the first two starts, his velocity was up and he was putting the ball wherever he wanted. If no one gets hurt, Cole will need to bump someone when he comes back and I had that as Nestor currently coming into today but obviously he is much much safer after that one, no matter the opponent. So now I'd say Gil to long relief, they presumably want to keep his innings down anyway.

Beeter debuted the same way in the HOU series, pitching the 9th inning with a big lead and somehow doing it on just 3 pitches (I think this was when Alvarez rounded 1st and got tagged out?), Maciejewski today did almost the same thing, just 4 pitches in the 9th.

In case anyone thought MLB was a sexy lifestyle, here is 28 year old Maciejewski's path to his first MLB game tonight:

GCL > Staten Island > Tampa > ExtSpr > SI > Charleston > SWB > Cha. > Tampa > SWB > Tampa > 2020 off > Hudson Valley > SWB > HV > SWB > HV > Somerset > SWB > Som. > IL in Somerset > HV rehab > SWB > Som. > SWB > Som. > SWB > Som. > SWB > NYY

Amazing job transcribing that. I wonder if a sexy lifestyle path to the majors even exists. Even the Dodgers' AA/AAA affiliates are in Tulsa / Oklahoma City, and the San Diego's are in El Paso and San Antonio. All fine I'm sure, unless it's 109 degrees on a crap bus out of a crap motel in July. I guess the top college draftees from June might make the majors in September if all goes perfect

I think you basically need to go from Japan league stardom to MLB to avoid the baseball equivalent of years of basic training.
