Volpe has now gotten screwed by this ump twice. He still looks awesome.
He looks incredible on both sides of the ball, that short hop in the hole, wow. And his strike zone decisions are incredible, even if as you say the ump punched him out twice on 3-2 balls outside the zone.
Amazing job by Nestor obviously, you could tell right from the first batter that he would be much better than the first two starts, his velocity was up and he was putting the ball wherever he wanted. If no one gets hurt, Cole will need to bump someone when he comes back and I had that as Nestor currently coming into today but obviously he is much much safer after that one, no matter the opponent. So now I'd say Gil to long relief, they presumably want to keep his innings down anyway.
Beeter debuted the same way in the HOU series, pitching the 9th inning with a big lead and somehow doing it on just 3 pitches (I think this was when Alvarez rounded 1st and got tagged out?), Maciejewski today did almost the same thing, just 4 pitches in the 9th.
In case anyone thought MLB was a sexy lifestyle, here is 28 year old Maciejewski's path to his first MLB game tonight:
