We scored 22 runs in 11 innings against the Astros, after which they have now scored 20 runs in 20 innings against us (and counting -- this inning is still going).

Remember, like 32 hours ago, when Adam Duvall had just hit a go ahead home run and the team was 12 outs from being just 3.5 back in the playoff race??

Yeah, me neither.

Mound visit probably goes: "Sorry Kutter, bullpen is spent. Most of those guys pitched 4 days ago. Gonna need you to take one for the team here."

Might as well go back to using openers. That was working for a while. Probably won't work anymore, but if a reliever can keep us in the game for 2 innings, that would be better than the rotation has done for the past couple weeks. Then the starter's traditional 4 IP would be the 3rd through the 6th, and maybe you can keep it close enough to use Martin and Jansen. If Jansen can actually pitch.

I think rearranging these deck chairs will keep this ship afloat.

Of course, when every pitcher you have gets battered, that's kind of a problem.

Yah... Not much Cora can do when the entire rotation has not gone at least 5IP....

But what song is the band going to play?

For a guy with only 2 hits, Brantley is having a good year.

Holy shit did we get exposed this homestand. We're lucky Mookie only hit it to the track in the game we won, or it would be a complete L.

The goal now is to stay ahead of the Yankees

Thats why, at least to me, they really needed to go for it in that game and not punt it. Now i am under no illusion that they may have still gone out and crapped the bed these last two games (and maybe would have also still lost that game as well) as the Astros are just obviously better than the Sox right now but I still feel that game and the way it was managed really had an effect on the rest of this series.

Maybe Bloom has his eye on someone that the Angels put on waivers and they are trying to get a better waiver wire position to get them?

With who? They had Barraclough, Llovera, Martin and Kenley available with 4 innings to get through.

“But what if we waste all of our decent relievers in a losing effort?” seems to be a core strategy this season. Seems like an oddly defeatist line of thinking, but what do I know.

I might have missed it, but which of our pitchers have had decent outings on this homestand?
Crawford last time was pretty good. Houck against the Dodgers was pretty good, Neither went very long.
Schrieber had a save against LA in that one game we won that time.
And Llovera had 2 scoreless appearances in garbage time.
Seems like everybody else has sucked in this homestand.

The Astors are averaging over 10 runs a game over their last 5. They are hitting pretty well lately.

Whitlock was great last year and then they had to get greedy and make him a starter

How many fans were on their way into Fenway for a 3rd inning arrival and have elected to go back home?

Can we just forfeit the rest of the season and send everyone to extended fall training?

i guess if it is truly the case that no one else was available then they needed to have made a move prior to the game to have at least someone else available in case the reliever you brought up that was recently in Independent ball had absolutely nothing when coming in after Sale )who should not have been being counted on to go long). It just seems crazy to me to go into a game that important with Sale and Barraclough responsible to get you through 7 innings with no other options at all. Just frustrating (to me at least) that that was the situation.

Choke city, Red Sox.
Can it really be a choke when you are losing to teams that are better than you?

There are tiers in all organized sports, the Red Sox are not in the highest tier, they are not in the lowest tier. I believe they are in the low side of the middle tier.

Frustrating yes, but with Bernardino going on the covid IL there just aren't good pitchers left in the system. The starters have been sucking too hard for too long and the pen is worn out and the replacements are mediocre AAA guys.
