I have you beat by a few years. I moved to DC in 1987 after college and saw Joe Gibbs win two SBs with two JAG quarterbacks and Bobby Beathard's great roster building (Wikipedia: Prominent Beathard draft picks for Washington include Art Monk, Joe Jacoby, Mark May, Russ Grimm, Dexter Manley, Charlie Brown, Darrell Green, Charles Mann, and Gary Clark.).
There were stories about creative tension between Gibbs and Beathard and how Jack Kent Cooke made it all work by knowing how to manage the two geniuses while recognizing and mediating disagreements. Basically the opposite of what's happening now.
Having been here at the height of their glory through this long embarrassing decline, I keep telling myself it's a cautionary tale for the Patriots once Belichick and Brady retire and Bob Kraft dies. Jack Kent Cooke decided to put the team up for sale rather than leave it to his son. Snyder was able to buy the team since the NFL chose his offer over that of Cooke's son John. No telling what would have happened if the team had stayed in the family but it certainly couldn't have been any worse.
I hope and fully expect that the Krafts have studied the demise of the once great Washington team compared to say the Steelers and Giants who have maintained competence and stability over many many years.
