Can't imagine it would be Salty. The last thing this pitching staff needs is to be throwing to a guy who sucks at receiving.

Swihart time or bring back Salty?

I wouldn't take Salty over Leon and my opinion of Leon couldn't be lower. It's either Swihart time or I expect they will make a trade for another journeyman like Hannigan.

Sherman tweeted exactly what I was thinking. I'm going to guess that Theo would want too much from the Sox for any of his catchers.

Is it really unfathomable that they'd give Swihart a look? Desperate times, desperate measures...

@nickcafardo: Cherington , Hazen in Farrell office likely discussing next move for catcher after Hanigan injury. Could salty be an option?

This was the nightmare scenario when CV went down. God damn it. Bring Swihart up. Can he be worse than anything else they'll do? Let him learn on the job with this staff, some of whom he'll be catching next year anyway.

The way catcher injuries have gone this year, can we get him a pair of iron gauntlets and a potato launcher to make the throws to second for him?

Also, bubble wrap.

Hanigan has a fractured knuckle on his little finger. Seems to be a chance he returns but it would not be for a while if so.
"A chance he returns"? Like, ever?

Two questions: I get that it would be expediting things, and that we have a recent history of bringing guys up perhaps a tick or two too early but is promoting Swihart really that irresponsible?

Also, why is everyone so unbelievably down on Salty? Understand that he hasn't been good the last year-plus but he had a very solid 2013 until he burned out – and at the time most people wanted him back until the price for prohibitive.

Agreed.

Would it be ideal to have Swihart in the Bucket for another month or so working on his game calling and such ? Sure. However , if that is the decision it has some sizable ripple effects. Another team like say the Cubs is not going to hand over Castillo or their backup catcher for peanuts.  Value will need to be sacrificed. There is also service time concerns theoretically.

All I know is Quintero and Leon would be a painful duo.

RE: Salty

Most people wanted him back to catch a staff that featured Lester, Peavy and Lackey and to split time with Vazquez while the Sox broke him in. This staff cannot afford to have a catcher with Salty's receiving skills (or absolute lack thereof). Even if he was hitting like it was June 2013, they need a much better receiver than him. He gives away strikes, they need a guy can steal them.

What was the reason Napoli had to put away the mitt? Something to do with his hips?

Just thinking out loud.

The situation sucks.

@JMastrodonato: Ironic that a week ago bullpen coach Dana LeVangie said he was talking to Ryan Hanigan about playing safer, keeping right hand protected.

Take on Ruiz and Papelbon to get Hamels at a cheaper rate? Who says no? Besides Amaro of course...

People have been saying that since opening day in the gamethreads. You'd think after the fourth time being hit in the hand this year he'd move it behind his back like other catchers, but instead he gets hit a fifth time and potentially ends his season. It's so frustrating because it's fluky, but not something unavoidable.

It's really not fluky at all.  If you leave your exposed hand there, you're going to get hit.  The only question is whether you get bruised or broken.

Industry source: Swihart will join Red Sox Sat. though Sox will continue to explore external options. Saltalamacchia not among them, however

I'm curious if the external option is necessarily a replacement for Swihart or a more reliable guy to replace Leon and work Swihart in with? I've had the suspicion since Vaz went down that they were going to ride Hanigan hard for April and May with Leon subbing sporadically. Then they would call up Swihart and have him split time with Hanigan. Under these circumstances, I'm thinking their looking outside the org may indicate that they are looking more looking for a strong backup to work with Swihart.

Edit for late night spelling, grammar and incomplete thoughts.

This shaky staff starting over with a new catcher is terrifying.

Swihart is supposed to be pretty good at framing. I'd wager he's an improvement over Leon, at least. Of course, he's probably an improvement over Leon in every way. Swihart is a solid defensive catcher with the potential to grow into a plus one. This might actually make the Red Sox better over all, odd as that may sound.

So our two starting catchers at the start of the season are either done for the year or a majority of it. And it's only been a month. Has that ever happened before?

It's great that Swihart is being deemed ready and all, but who will take this rusty grill out of my backyard for me no questions asked?

I was really starting to like Hanigan. Tough at-bats and some key hits
and walks; and the sob did a hell of a job getting me from Kenmore to Logan in rush hour traffic.  Get well soon.

I blame myself. Sorry everyone.

Seriously though, calling up Swihart and seeing how he handles the job is the correct call, I think. You're not getting a catcher in a trade right now without overpaying, or going so far down the ladder that Leon might be the better player. I guess Salty was an option but the sounds like the Sox aren't considering it so no point in debating it.
