He's the first domino though. Scherzer isn't signing until Lester is off the table and Shields is Plan C for anyone in on Scherzer and Lester.staz said:For the life of me, I can't figure out why Jon doesn't let this go on for another 2 or 3 weeks. What's the impetus? As the SP supply goes down, his value only rises.

If the Sox believe that, they should give Lester whatever it takes and then go get Scherzer too. But I would be blown away if Scherzer's market ends up being lower than Lester's.wibi said:
At some point Scherzer is going to want to sign and he might set the market lower than Lester wanted.
There's no way in hell Scott Boras is going to let Scherzer sign before January anyway. Whether Lester signs on December 8, 9 or 10 is irrelevant.wibi said:

I read something earlier saying the Sox had offered 7 years but for less money. Not sure if it was speculation or not.The Mort Report said:You have to wonder if the Cubs went with a 7th year and/or more dollars and Boston is unwilling to match, and he is having a hard time leaving that kind of money on the table. My gut, which is about as accurate as twitter, is thinking this is what his hold up is

FWIW - asked a high ranking #redsox official if they were out on Lester? Got a simple "no comment" - #wbz

Cherington told us Sox players been talking to/probably still talking to Lester to sign. One player told me "he gave everything he had" #wbz

No downside, there, but even though it is a business the dating analogy doesn't seem like it's too far off. The humans representing teams put a lot into this ( it seems) and it is a nice gesture to at least call them to let them know. (Rather than just ignoring their phone calls and letting them see him in another uniform on opening day.)
Gonna' be a tough call to either the Cubs or Red Sox, though. Probably a short one.

Put another way, how happy would he have been pitching in meaningless games with a bunch of youngsters? Would that have put him in a better mindset vis-a-vis the Sox rather than trading him to a contender? It's impossible to know, but assuming the trade is what's driven him away (if he's been driven away) seems like a pretty bold assumption.
