no coincidence that the goal came right after Cabella came in for Ameobi. I don't get that sub in the 90th minute, it's a draw and Ameobi tracks back better. Cabella should only come in if he's in a position with less defensive responsibility, he doesn't track back well at all.

Another solid 90 minutes and another win. Pardew most definitely IN.

Cisse do something dumb in the first half?

Just watching the aftermath of the footie on Sky, Pardew hasn't come out for an interview and he's odds on for the Palace job. What's this all about? Why go to Palace?

Just guessing, but Pardew is a Londoner and lived most of his life there. He also played for Crystal Palace for a few years when he was a player.

I've also read Pardew doesn't make a lot at Newcastle and that Palace could actually offer a wage increase. Why the fuck Palace would want him is beyond me, though.

Soxfan, Cissé should have been sent off for elbowing Seamus Coleman and is looking at a potential three match ban. Of course, as these things go, if the referee had called the penalty on Coleman for holding Cissé in the first place the elbow wouldn't have happened. Still, it's hard to defend a guy after throwing three elbows and landing one square on the jaw.

Thing is, Pardew has rode many a storm at Newcastle.  He has a decent side, he could win something in the next two or three years. I know it's the Toon and they won't win anything ever again, but that's just cos God hates the toon, not for any footballing reasons. But at Palace, what will happen is this. He keeps them up, he spends some money in the close season, the team flirts with relegation, he gets sacked...that happens a year or two years from now. That's how it works with YoYo Teams.

Sure he will be closer to Friends and family and Canvay Island and Jellied Eels but he'll be getting his P45 soon enough and be in London and out of a job, and he'll then have to take the best second tier gig he can get...Like a Reading, a Watford...one of those teams. Not everyone can do what 'arry does and make a living in the South and 'arry gets longer than most.

I think this is one of two things

a. He's legitimately interested, ideally leaves and not only does the club get out of his ridiculous contract 5.5 years early, they get compensation (I've read 6 million pounds), and probably a better manager on a more manageable contract.

b. He's trying to use Palace as leverage to get a better contract, maybe even another 8 year contract extension!

In other news, the Scottish Football Association board unanimously voted to block Ashley's move to increase his stake at Rangers from 8.9% to 29.9%. He already controls a majority of Rangers' board members (old friend Derek Llambias is now CEO of Rangers), but SFA clearly doesn't want an EPL owner to have a large stake in a scottish club.

The SPL might not care as much as the SFA. But then again, Rangers* don't look like they'll be in the SPL for a bit.

Damn, though. Could you imagine Pardew and Ashley both leaving midseason? Maybe I'm too fearful, but I feel like if that happened they'd be replaced by the law firm of Venables and Venkees and NUFC would somehow be worse off.

I bet if we all chipped in we could buy 5% of Rangers. I have a couple of quid i can throw in.

Yeah, but then we'd own 5% of Rangers and who in their right mind wants that? I'd feel dirty for perpetuating the Old Firm system.

He's gone. I don't get it. My thoughts are that his buddy Ashley is a) a dick and b) might be happier with Rangers in that stupid league than Newcastle being middling in a good league.

That said I don't have much time for pardew esp after that headbutt. Stupid. The fact they got out of the contract and got paid for it... Well depends what happens next frankly. Who comes in? Because Ashley doesn't have a good history.

Holy shit. It's nice to get out of that contract

I've seen Pulis's name thrown around, but I'm hoping for a caretaker and then Frank de Boer in the summer. might be a pipe dream though

You support the New Shimmer of football clubs.

I was going to suggest Christophe Galtier of St Etienne as a "Ha ha Newcastle going French" bad joke, but it looks like he might be for real.

OTOH, I think those "English press reports" are all from May.

astride the divide
Some guy at the Guardian authored a decent eulogy, though I admit I don't get all the cultural references.

The real sense of ennui here is simply the boredom of diminished possibilities. This is a club who have existed in a state of gloriously thwarted ambition for the last 60 years but who are now in the grip of a business model designed not with glory or even particularly entertainment in mind. Ashley’s sights remain set on staying in the top 10, selling profitably and sitting on the club like a London property tycoon watching the TV rights market rise around him, all the while providing a global billboard for the world’s most bizarrely overexposed cut-price tracksuit shop.

I feel like he would be a good choice.  He has experience working on a tight budget and has a reputation for working well with young players, both of which are keys for the Newcastle job.  Perhaps he would also increase our chances of landing Alexandre Lacazette and/or Clément Grenier?

5 players sent on loan to Rangers

Those who will make the journey north to Ibrox are Gael Bigirimana, Shane Ferguson, Kevin Mbabu, Remie Streete and Haris Vuckic

This shit is getting creepy. like Grenada/Watford/Udinese level weird

Also, Davide Santon loaned to Inter with an option to buy. He's been stapled to the bench all year after playing a lot the last three seasons.

He's talking to NYCFC for short term deal, a french paper says he can join MLS since it has a different calendar from UEFA.

His only options in Europe are places like the Kosovo Superleague or North Cyprus League, since they are non-FIFA leagues. Which would be insane. But whatever, he said he'd play in the north pole.

Siem De Jong has suffered a collapsed lung again and will miss another couple of months. The last thing to look forward to this season is no more.

This team has as many healthy defenders in the squad (5) as they do on loan. In their infinite wisdom they put Santon in the doghouse all season after starting for years, and decided they didn't want to pay him so sent him on loan without a recall clause. Now we're stuck having to put the same defenders out there game after game even though they suck. I love Colo but he's bad. They'll all get worn down. We're one injury away from playing Drummett in the middle and Anita at fullback.

They deserve to go down. I hope they do and ashley fucks off and they can start over.
I don't know if I really want the relegation but if it gets rid of ashley and they bounce back it really could be for the best. Newcastle is in great financial shape but ashley has no interest in winning. For once his half season bullshit is looking like hubris and good. Selling players when you're top half and playing well so you don't ever have a chance of winning risks this. Every year.

I haven't watched a match since Feb or early March, and don't plan on wasting 2 hours on Saturdays until Ashley sells. Whenever that is. However, if the last relegation is anything to go by, he won't sell if they go down because they will be undervalued. Last team to stay up is basically perfect in his mind to sell and probably for a buyer as well
