It's gonna be nice to add two bats that can hit from the left side with some pop in the lineup.
Really curious how they plan to use Wells. I did read recently that when he has free time in the minors, he sets the pitching machine to mimic the Yankee pitchers and he practices catching them, very cool.

I am kinda amazed that pitching machines can do that.
There was a MLB game recently where there was a rain delay late in the game. The next hitter spent the whole delay in the tunnel hitting against the repertoire of the reliever he knew he'd be facing (he had yet to face three batters) and got a big hit when the game resumed (this is from memory, sorry for no specifics).

Spencer Jones gets his first AA HR, a grand slam against Portland in the 7th to change a 6-4 deficit to an 8-4 lead, he also has two walks and a SB.

With all of these other guys up now, Jones is the last very exciting position player in NY's high minors (we'll see about Trey Sweeney), Roderick Arias is going to fly up the system next year also.

Wow, that's cool. Do they just like put AJ Minter into a computer and then does the pitching machine throw like AJ Minter?

I just did a quick search, you can do that too if you like. Here is one piece I found quickly, from summer 2022:

"New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has bought an artificial intelligence-based pitching machine that analyzes MLB ball-tracking data to replicate the delivery and pitches of any pitcher inputted into its system. The machine can be used pre-game but MLB prohibits its use during games, according to The New York Post.

“[The machine] will be the pitcher, so if we draw up Clayton Kershaw we will be facing Kershaw, his windup and everything and his pitches,” Mets hitting coach Eric Chavez told The Post before Thursday’s game against the Dodgers. "

NY's AFL participants announced, no one too sexy but Vrieling is someone to keep an eye on, a high pick in 2022 who didn't get to pitch this season with elbow issues, but now is evidently healthy. Thorpe got drafted ahead of him, Hampton after him, both of those guys are already top 100 prospects.

Yankees (Mesa):

Benjamin Cowles, 2B/3B/SS; Caleb Durbin, 2B/3B; Nolberto Henriquez, RHP; Nelson Medina, OF; Kevin Stevens, RHP; Baron Stuart, RHP; Trystan Vrieling, RHP

NY didn't send any of their top prospects to the Arizona league, although Trystan Vrieling and Beck Way are both promising inexperienced SPs trying to get a few innings in and both have a few scoreless outings.

But Caleb Durbin has made himself worth talking about briefly, he is one of the two players NY got back from ATL for Lucas Luetge in Dec 2022, a 2021 14th round pick by ATL. He plays some SS and 3B, but he is primarily a Jose Altuve sized (5'6") 2B. This was his 23 year old season and he put up a solid .801 OPS in 194 PAs in AA, but his main thing is he is a prolific base stealer, 79 (14 CS) in 691 career professional ABs. He is crushing in Arizona, led off tonight's game with a HR and has a 1.165 OPS when I checked mid-game just now, top 5 in the league, 6 SBs in 12 games.

I think most of these guys are relievers but some are starters, so I am going to put it into the general thread:

I noticed recently that different Yankee prospect writers seem to incessantly mention how gigantic some of their top system relief prospects are, so I decided to make a list and wow there are a lot. All eight of these guys are 6'7" or 6'8", no idea if this is the full list, but I wanted to keep an eye on this. Cashman of course has been targeting gigantic baseball players an extreme amount in recent years, and here is another wave en route, the Sons of Dellin Betances.

Danny Watson
Jack Neely
Bailey Dees
Henry Lalane
Carlos Lagrange
Zach Messinger

2023 draft: Nicholas Judice, Bryce Warrecker

Durbin made the AFL All-Star team, currently slashing .324/.454/.544, 14-16 in SBs in 19 games.

There are only two games left after tonight and Caleb Durbin is taking a run at the alltime AFL SB record. He went 3-4 tonight with 3 SBs, taking his total up to 20 in 21 games, only the 4th player in league history to get to 20 (the last was Eric Young Jr. in 2008).

The alltime league record is 24 in 1994 by someone named Rick Holifield, Durbin very much wants 5 more in the final 2 games to not just tie but break the record. There are some funny quotes here, a little Rickey being Rickey feel:

https://www.mlb.com/news/yankees-caleb-durbin-aims-for-history-on-basepaths-in-fall-league

"Durbin kicked off his evening with an opposite-field single – one of his three hits on the night – in the first inning. His base-stealing lore has become so well-known that Salt River starter Darius Vines (ATL No. 10) immediately utilized his two pickoff moves to try and keep Durbin close, before firing over to first a third straight time unsuccessfully, gifting the 23-year-old infielder a free base.

“I think everyone in the stadium knew I was going to be running,” Durbin said."

Durbin with just one additional SB in the final 2 games, finishing with 21 in 23 games. He went 3-8 with his 3rd HR though, ending at .353 with a 1.044 OPS (5th in the league).

I don't pay for BA access but I think the top 3 are above 70 and the next 4 are from 71-100. They're not redoing the top 100 currently though now, I don't think, maybe after they finish the individual teams (?).

These were their rankings in August, you can see the order has moved around since then, and Thorpe replaced the graduated Peraza:
  • IF Oswald Peraza (Baseball America No. 57)
  • RHP Chase Hampton (BA No. 58)
  • OF Jasson Dominguez (BA No. 64)
  • OF Everson Pereira (BA No. 79)
  • C Austin Wells (BA No. 85)
  • OF Spencer Jones (BA No. 86)
  • SS Roderick Arias (BA No. 97)

So Richard Fitts was traded yesterday and needed to be replaced on the mlb.com top 30 Yankee prospect list. Generally in these situations, they add someone at #30, but 19 year old LHP Henry Lalane has people so excited that they added him and slotted him all the way up at #14, just below Randy Vasquez and just above Clayton Beeter, although he is years behind both of them in development.

NY traded for Jorbit Vivas today, a 22 year old 2B who finished the year in AAA. A couple of things:

1) This top fantasy prospect list made in October has Vivas at a surprising #81 overall, just ahead of Robert Hassell and Michael Busch. That's not far below Drew Thorpe (#64), meaning according to this list NY has as many top 100 prospects as they did before the Soto deal:

Jasson Dominguez (15)
Spencer Jones (32)
Austin Wells (43)
Everson Pereira (68)
Jorbit Vivas (81)

They have Trey Sweeney at #200 on the list.

2) We all know Cashman loves collecting gigantic 6'7 and 6'8" players but he has also put together an entire system of Altuve/Pedroia-sized second basemen, Vivas is the 'biggest' at 5'10";

Jorbit Vivas (5'10", 171)
Caleb Durbin (5'6", 185)
Jared Serna (5'6", 168)
Roc Riggio (5'9", 180)
Keiner Delgado (5'7", 145) (145!!!)

And they're all talented, quite possibly all five of them should make a NY top 30 prospect list now. Sweeney is 6'4" (and still a SS for now), so I guess he had to go. Strange!!!

I do wonder about some of those sizes. Like I know Delgado's size is listed at what it was when they signed him at 16. Not to say he is 6'3" now, but I seriously doubt he is still 145. He does have some legitimate pop

There is about as much chance I will be on the Yankee 40 man roster in 2 years as there is that this guy will make it that quickly, but I guess we'll see.

View: https://twitter.com/hgomez27/status/1746933289540026418?s=20

The New York Yankees have signed the 17-years-old OF Francisco Vilorio for a $1.7 million signing bonus. Vilorio is projected to be on the 40 man roster in 2 years due to his extraordinary potential and skill He can run a 6.3 60 yard dash and has hit balls with 114MPH on exit velocity while clocking 107 MPH on his throws. He is a product of the High Performance Prospects program.

I question why he is only the #15 or #16 guy on people's lists if he genuinely has those kinds of skills, but I guess we'll see.

Given that statcast has never tracked a throw above 105.7 (Brenton Doyle last year, next highest is Acuna at 104.1), those claims could also just be bullshit.

I think sometimes he posts stuff just to keep sources happy.

Edit: And of course I think he would not be alone in that.

I think there's some amount of bias too, I always get the feeling he's trying to sell Latino players a bit.

Feels like the story of these rankings is who rates Jasson higher or lower than Spencer. Have to be insane to trade either of them at this point.

Kiley McDaniel's overall farm system rankings are out today (I think the BA ones are too, but I don't pay for that site). NY is 6th, down from 4th last year, but still impressive considering promotions, trades (NY has traded an insane 30 pitchers since the July 2022 deadline), and never having a high draft pick. The five AL East teams according to Kiley:

1. BAL ($371M value)
6. NYY ($252M value), 3rd in the AL behind BAL and DET
7. TB ($249M)
13. BOS ($223M)
24. TOR ($126M)

9. New York Yankees
13. Boston Red Sox
24. Toronto Blue Jays

I don't question it since I know Baltimore has done such a great job with their farm system, but it is still a little shocking for me to see those McDaniel estimates and how big the value gap is between Baltimore and everyone else. Exciting times for Orioles fans if new ownership starts spending money.

Yeah, they tanked for four full seasons but given that, they’ve done a nice job executing. Going forward, making decisions on who to spend money on is tricky, but yeah, I’ve been saying for a few years that they’re the looming behemoth in the division.

It also kinda strikes me that Toronto look like they could bet in a really bad spot. Which I don't think is something I would have said two years ago with Bichette and Vladdy coming on the scene.

This year for the first time, each team is playing one ‘Spring Breakout’ game which is all prospects on both sides, although oddly it’s just 7 innings.

NY’s is against TOR tomorrow afternoon, lot of fun names on this list. Will Warren is out of it now, as he is a MLB 5th SP candidate, Brock Selvidge is getting the start.

The highest ceiling prospects there are Arias, Jones and Lalane, a gigantic 19 year old lefty SP that everyone loves. Ramirez, Vivas and Pereira are the only ones on the 40 man so far.

Also I think 5 of those infielders are tiny second basemen. I hope someone thinks to take a group photo, maybe photoshop in a yellow brick road. 5’8” second basemen, collect ‘em all.

Kids look good, up 7-0 in the 3rd.

Brock Selvidge threw three hitless/scoreless, presumably done now.

Spencer Jones homered his first time up, off a lefty, but 'just' 399.
