Essentially they get the pick they would have gotten had they not dealt Lester, then traded Gomes for a year and a half of Cespedes. Maybe playing with Papi will help.

There's also Lackey and Miller deals to come. A lot in flux.

Fielding Bible has him as -2 runs over the past three years in LF. Pretty close to average. Though that includes the baserunner kills from his awesome arm, so he's probably a bit below average with the glove, but makes up for it with the arm. He probably wouldn't be good at all in RF in Fenway. But he could turn lots of doubles to left into singles or outs at second though.
He's perfect for LF at the Fens. He would be a disaster in RF.

We got one!  A competitive balance pick that, unless I'm mistaken, is a better pick than the pick we would have gotten from letting Lester walk...

Like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Art Howe is no longer with the A's.

470 SLG% is top 20 in the AL.  And with RH power at a premium and the Sox lacking it, Cespedes seems like a good return.

Yeah that was the joke.  I rewatched Moneyball recently.

Cespedes could be very useful to the Mariners - perhaps there is another shoe to drop with Seattle (Lackey + Cespedes for Walker + co.)?

The Comp B pick the Sox received is between the 2nd and 3rd round.

The Competitive Balance Lottery for the 2015 MLB Draft took place this afternoon. Twelve competitive balance picks are awarded, with the first six taking place after the first round’s conclusion and the next six taking place following conclusion of the second round. Here are the results, per MLB.com (Twitter links)…
Competitive Balance Round A
  1. Marlins
  2. Rockies
  3. Cardinals
  4. Brewers
  5. Padres
  6. Indians
Competitive Balance Round B
  1. Reds
  2. Athletics
  3. Mariners
  4. Twins
  5. Orioles
  6. Diamondbacks
As MLB.com’s Jim Callis explained earlier in the week, teams that have one of the 10 smallest markets or one of the 10 smallest revenue pools are eligible to receive a compensatory pick between the first and second rounds (Round A) or between the second and third rounds (Round B).
The A’s, Diamondbacks, Indians, Marlins, Orioles, Padres, Pirates, Rays, Reds, Rockies and Royals were eligible for Comp Round A picks. The teams that didn’t receive an extra pick from that pool were placed into a second pool that also included the Mariners and Twins to determine which would receive a Comp Round B selection. These picks are eligible to be traded any time during the regular season, right up until 5pm ET on the day of next year’s draft.

On a free agency return: I just don't see how the Sox would 've willing to match the Yankees, now down CC, in an open market. They'd have to hope Jon really would return and just wasn't saying the "right things" before being traded. This organization has stockpiled arms like it's a fetish for just such occasions.

I suspect In my lifetime is right and my sarcasm meter is broken. But if not, consider that they can offer Cespedes a QA next fall and get one of those comp picks, just a year late.

He has explained that he's just following the rules.  No one else is aware of this rule, but that's his position and he's sticking with it.

Flipping him to a division rival would be in really bad taste.

Sending about $1mill to the A's.

Second tweet is saying the comp pick is worth about $800K in slot money

Don't hate the return of Cespedes honesty it's more than I expected - but the real coup is the comp pick and the extra draft money that comes with it.

I don't get the flipping aspect. The RS desperately need a power hitting corner outfielder. Granted that need is for next year, but still. And as others have mentioned if he walks after 2015 the RS get a comp pick as well.

Pretty obviously.

I stand by my opinion of Cespedes, though.

I'm not sure how Cespedes fits. He doesn't have an approach at the plate and he is wasted in Fenway's LF.

I'm with you 100% on this one.  My work in the Corsi P&G thread speaks for itself.

Only two major leaguers with 12 outfield assists this season: Jackie Bradley Jr. and Yoenis Cespedes.

This is where I'm at, too.  This reeks of the FO trying to keep fans interested.  "We traded for the home run derby champ!"

Edit:  I understand we got the pick, so this is certainly better than just letting Lester walk.  But I expected more out of this.

Because he is only signed through next year.  Considering this year is over, we are getting him for only one year.

Can folks post the text of tweets instead of just "link to tweet?" that's not all that helpful. Thanks.

Another thing to think about is how many fly balls to left in Oak turned into outs whereas in the Fens they'll be singles and doubles off the Wall.

Remember for the prospect people Mr. Lackey and Miller will probably bring back some nice guys for the farm.

Huge fan of the deal. Don't think they'll be bringing Lester back.

The QC
Can Cespedes be offered a QO after next year?  It's a little disappointing that he's a FA early (I'm surprised MLB allowed him to become a FA w/o 6 years of service)...  but the extra pick next year would be nice.  Earlier in this thread it said the A's couldn't offer him arbitration after next year, but that's not the same as a QO.

I guess that's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things.

Yup -- which is why I and others have been obnoxiously agitating for Stanton.
It's not a matter of accepting Stanton's production, but rather ignoring his contract/service situation in order to post messages of desire. Right now, he's as obtainable as crotchless panties on Algon.

If this is true, Cespedes has to be really bummed. I'd love Lester to help the As win the WS. If this is true, color me relatively happy.

I would guess that penthouse to outhouse would bum out Cespedes or anyone else.

And NOT accusing YOU of this....
Given the quality of our local analysts, (and assuming he isn't flipped) I soon expect a flood of "will-he-be-a-malcontent" stories based solely on the fact that he's from the same country as that other affront-to-high-pantsed-white-men-everywhere, Yasiel Puig.

If this is not a flip, then I have to think Ben is going for it next year. If that is the case, trading Lackey does not make any sense in my opinion.
