So does that make ERod the "opener" and they go with bullpen matchups?
This is why it was dumb to go with Erod instead of Hembree/Workman for the 9th inning yesterday.

Have the BP session in the BP.

----
If you're using an opener, a la TB, then I guess it may make sense to go with Kelly, with the Astros featuring righties at the top.

I know we all love Monday morning QBing here, but calling Alex Cora's decision "dumb" is bit much. I'm sure he knows a hell of lot better what ERod and the team needs than any of us here.

Also I'm not sure why milking those 16 pitches in a Tuesday game is worse than throwing them in the pen on Tuesday. Seems to me that Cora can come back with ERod whenever he wants here, more or less.

Lets hope the inning last night was the equivalent of Erod's throw-day and he can go tomorrow.

And lets hope Porcello goes deep tonight.
Thing is, Erod isn't on a starter schedule so he's not doing side sessions like a starter would. I expect as long as there's a day between a short relief appearance and a start or long outing in relief of an "opener", he'll be just fine.

EdRod was pitching with a 6 run lead last night; I doubt those 16 pitches will have any negative impact on his potential Game 5 start, er... opening, tomorrow.

Regarding Sale, there's still plenty of time for him to recover enough to do a bullpen tomorrow. If he gets through that, he should be fine for Game 6 on Saturday. He doesn't have to be 100% for the bullpen session.

This would be a great time for Porcello to go 6 or 7 strong tonight.

The confusion now is...do you hold Price for Saturday and Eovaldi for Sunday (assuming Sale just won't make it back in time)

Or do you risk Price tomorrow on short rest...

Different decisions based on tonight's outcome probably.

If they know Sale won't be back in time, wouldn't it be better to DL him and put him back on the roster after the ALCS? Or can they not do that?

Because my brain still is having problems adjusting to Houston being in the AL I initially read this a very different way.

Hard to justify an overnight admission for some local skin irritation, even a VIP. I suppose it could have led to some large abscess requiring a complicated drainage and/or a systemic infection, but seems like he's just messing around with the media.

He was kidding.

“He told me that he was going to say that,’’ one Red Sox player told USA TODAY Sports, “but I didn’t believe him.’’

The player spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect Sale’s joke.

Of course he had a belly button ring. That's why he had to cut up a hole in the White Sox throwback uniform to fit around it.

Only tangentially related but cool/icky nonetheless. I might be misremembering here but didn’t David Justice dive for a ball and have a nipple ring get torn out?

Googling this does bring up a story about him getting a nipple ring but I don't see anything about it getting torn out
I did find this story about David Irving, a DE for the Cowboys, having his ripped out. Maybe you are combining the two?

Sounds like he made it through today's workout unscathed, and Cora reiterated Sale was starting Game 1. I'll call that great news on an otherwise really crappy weekend injury wise for the local sports teams.

Chris Sale pranking the media about his ailment is a great sign. I think we're in for a very good game 1.

In talking to Sox pitching coach Dana LeVangie, Chris Sale was iffy for Game 6 if there had been one in the ALCS. The days off have been a big help

Since Game 5 of the ALCS bet Chris Sale has put 10 pounds back on. Looks much healthier.

Sale dodged some questions about his health other than to say he’s ready.
This is making me reconsider getting that belly button ring.

Unrelated to Sale, but I had a hockey teammate in high school that had nipple rings. After a shitty loss in a tournament, he came into the dressing, took off his top stuff and then proceeded to rip out his nipple rings. Happy to have him on my team, because he was a tough bastard.

As for Sale, happy to see him healthy and ready to roll tomorrow night

Wait. Chris Sale lost 10 pounds in what, a week, and no one knows why?

What's the point of having an internet if we can't find out this info?

Well, some good and some bad last night, but fairly encouraging given the stomach ailment (and resultant loss of weight), and the long layoff. Albeit with him I think the layoff helped with the velocity, with his fastball mostly at 93 and 94 but at times touching 96. While that was encouraging, the layoff may also have hurt his control, especially his four seam fastball control. I mean, I know he is trying to paint corners with that pitch, but throwing only 11 of 30 for strikes put him in alot of deep counts, and many missed so badly you were not going to get a chase. His release point looked off on those, which to me is "rust" in his mechanics - did get a couple guys on it looking so was not all bad (I guess they were guessing slider instead?)....

His slider thankfully saved him - he threw 25 of 33 for strikes, got 20 swings, 9 of which were misses. The change up was also pretty good, and that is also a "feel pitch".

Timmons certainly did not help - 4 clear strikes called balls, none going the other way....

I guess the thinking is regular rest for a game 5 start on the 28th?

I see no reason why Sale wouldn't start Game 5, if necessary. I would venture a guess that he would be available out of the pen in Game 3, and possibly Game 4 in an emergency or in a "close out the series" type situation.
