Great post. Here's what Felger never understood. There are ways to get around current cap issues, but they pretty much all lead to extending the current player and giving him more guaranteed money with a contract extension that lowers the salary cap hit for that year. It just move the crisis into the future by a couple of years. As long as the cap kept going up, a team could keep punting on the issue, but with the cap being static for the last 3 years, the Jets have finally run into the wall. Now they have a bunch of older middling players that are owed a ton of money and since its all guaranteed, the dead money is huge if you cut them.
By and large I can see why Felger thinks the "Cap is Crap" because if a team is smart they can find ways to work around the cap in order to get a player or two that they feel will make a difference. However, the Jets are not smart and there is only so often you can massage the cap and keep extending and signing players because if you don't stop it's going to bite you in the ass eventually.
