Wow, what a game. Hunwick was amazing in net, and those penalty kills were huge. I'll be looking forward to the championship.

Great win for the Wolverines. Would love to get one more and hang another banner. Anyone know much about Minny-Duluth?

Regardless, if Hunwick stays hot, Michigan has a great chance. Go Blue

Very impressive goaltending. I never thought they'd survive that third-period onslaught.

I guess the Sioux fight differently these days...

That's pretty funny. Didn't see that on the coverage last night.

This guy must have been heckling pretty heavily from the outset, because after both Michigan goals, the players went right for the same spot in the boards.

Yup. I guarantee Vaughan's most lasting memory from the game will be the schadenfreude of facing down that fan, not scoring a goal.

The past 2 weeks have been destroying my body and brain. I've been averaging a little over 5 hours of sleep a night, but yes, it's NDU, not south.
It's UND, University of North Dakota.

Also, notice that Caporusso gives the finger right back to the fan.

Speaking of Louie, how can Melrose rant and rave that Rust is "by far" the best player on that team? It's pretty close between Cap, Rust, and Hunwick, no?

Don't know if anyone else caught it, but one of the commentators mentioned that between the 2 teams, there were 30 drafted players. I thought that was really effin cool.

I think he was just talking about the context of that one game. And no one ever talks about goalies when talking about the "best player on the team" unless we're talking about Roy or Brodeur in their prime. Last night Rust was UM's best player on the ice.

Not the way I would have liked it to end, but man what a game that was. There needs to be more college hockey on TV, all of the games I have watched have been amazing.

Just for future reference, how do you guys follow this? Even with google it is hard to find solid info (college baseball is the same way), and it is near impossible to find on TV, save the randoms games played on the Big 10 Network, etc.

ESPNU and NHL Net have some games too.

That was brutal. MD was the better team, but I'm still stuck on that No-Goal ruling in the first. The puck was clearly in the back of the net when the whistle blew. I have yet to hear a good explanation on how in the world that was not ruled a goal. Melrose and Thorne made no sense when trying to justify the call.

What a shitty sports week.

It's like Michigan is paying for something terrible the last few years. Every time there's a little promise in any sport, there's more disappointment.

For whatever reason (maybe just facing better competition, but they did beat some good teams thoroughly not all that long ago), the offense wasn't clicking in the Frozen Four. Hunwick stood on his head Thursday. UMD simply created more chances last night and deserved the win. Impossible to tell how the no-goal would have changed the game.

Not sure where you are but NESN usually has one or two games on the weekend. Same with CBS College or whatever that channel is called.

It's definitely hard. Luckily my school streams all of its home games online, but even then, it's hard to set aside two and half hours on Friday and Saturday nights to sit in front of my computer.

One of the hardest parts of being a college hockey fan is following recruiting and other news I take for granted in football and basketball. The main source of recruiting information comes from a guy who updates a Google spreadsheet. Just today on another message board, we were scanning the NCAA rulebook to see if one of our defensemen had any remaining eligibility. There is no media outlet to keep track of stuff like redshirts and transfers.

Yep, looks like the rumors that he was done back when he was suspended for the recruiting violations were well-founded. Purely from an on-ice perspective, I'm sorry to see him go, as he's the best coach NU's had since Flaman, edging Ben Smith by being able to beat someone other than Harvard in the Beanpot.

Regarding following college hockey generally:
There are three main news/commentary websites that are worth following: USCHO, College Hockey News, and Inside College Hockey. The USCHO Fan Forum is pretty much the definitive college hockey discussion board. Individual schools may have their own discussion boards, e.g. I know that Notre Dame has a small but very active hockey community within a larger ND sports board. If you want to watch college hockey on TV, the best bet is a dish with the regional sports networks, or a cable equivalent if such is available in your area. Between the Integer Network, ESPNU, CBS-CS, and the various private deals with local RSNs (NESN, FSN-Detroit, the Minneapolis FSN, etc) there's actually quite a bit of college hockey on TV when it's in-season.

The other shoe following the establishment of the BTHC (tm) appears to be about to drop: Five WCHA schools and Miami will announce soon that they will be leaving their respective conferences to form a new one. It is widely speculated that if Notre Dame wants in, the Irish and Western Michigan will also be added. It's not clear whether the current omission of ND is because the Irish haven't made up their minds yet---Hockey East is also rumored to be in play.

After losing Jack Campbell to the OHL last year, we are losing John Gibson to the OHL this year. Basically, I hate the OHL. Hunwick is going to be our starter and sophomore walk on, Adam Janecyk, will back up. It was a big deal to get Di Guiseppe and Hyman with the departures of Hagelin, Burlon, and Caporusso, but losing Gibson is another step back. Red is probably kicking his dog today.

CCHA/WCHA merger in the works?

Five CCHA schools have been extended invitations to join the WCHA for the 2013–2014 season.Alaska, Bowling Green, Ferris State, Lake Superior State and Western Michigan were offered spots Thursday on behalf of the presidents of the six WCHA teams that will comprise the league following the 2012–2013 season.

The six teams that will constitute the WCHA following the 2012–2013 season are Alaska-Anchorage, Bemidji State, Michigan Tech, Minnesota State, St. Cloud State and Northern Michigan.
If Minnesota-Moorehead goes D1 and becomes the 12th team in the new WCHA, that would leave only Notre Dame and Alabama-Huntsville still out there as independents going into '13-'14.

If that were to happen, I'm sure that would renew the talks of Notre Dame to Hockey East. Not sure they would be a good fit though as an 11th team because of travel.

I don't think there's really been any change in the situation for the Irish. We're clearly not going to be in whatever forms from the wreckage of the CCHA and WCHA. If there was any doubt about that, ND's absence from the joint meeting in Chicago settled it. The remaining options are NCHC, Hockey East, and independence. I'd prefer NCHC, personally, but I have no idea what the athletic department is thinking or what's going into their decision.

When the Notre Dame/Hockey East talk began earlier this year, I thought then the only way the ND made any sense was bringing another midwest school with them as the 12th team. With the current HE scheduling formula of playing each team three times, there is no way Notre Dame fits as an 11th school with up to a half dozen teams making a trip to South Bend for a single game. Otherwise the league is looking at a new, unbalanced schedule. I thought Miami would be an attractive 12th team to come to HE with Notre Dame, but with them off the table only other option is Bowling Green. Otherwise I think HE stays at 10 and ND has to go NCHC or independent.

I don't think Hockey East would stay on a balanced three games per team schedule under any expansion scenario, so that would eliminate the "travel to South Bend for just one game" problem.

Should we start a new thread for this season?

Our freshmen (Hyman and Di Giuseppe) look good. That's the good news. Bad news? Jon Merrill has been suspended 12 games for violating team rules. First game at Yost tonight (exhibition). Wish I was in Ann Arbor for it.

BC with a 2 man breakaway, misses the net and then Chiasson with a snipe on the 5-3 PP, to make it 3-0. What a turnaround. Where was this effort against Holy Cross, Terriers?

Is there any sport that BC doesn't suck at? 4-1 Terriers despite being outshot something like 102-11
