Flores will have his pick of any job opening he wants. Houston is a strong possibility, but I wouldn't rule out Chicago or Denver.
I think Chicago is going to go after whoever the hot young offensive mind is to pair with Fields. Denver I could see, maybe even Minnesota.

This may well be the case. As to Houston, I think we have no real idea whether Flores would or would not like the idea of working for Easterby, right? At least, my perception is you're working for him and for Caserio jointly. They know each other and that could be a positive or a negative, I do think there's some reason to think not all legacy Pats are fans of Easterby.

Football twitter thus far appears unanimous about how bizarre/inexplicable Brian Flores's firing is.

What’s the track record on coaches immediately switching jobs? Reid and Gruden had immediate success, but after that I think it’s mostly bad.

Color me shocked, and giddy that Flores is out in Miami. Absolute stupidity on behalf of Ross. I would imagine they have a big splash lined up, but that is just not how you build a winning organization.

Off-topic but it is both depressing and so on-brand for the NFL that Watson is most likely going to be out there playing for some team next year and the media and broadcasting partners will just completely ignore the fact that he's a giant piece of shit.

If Harbaugh is going anywhere, I can’t imagine that Miami would be his choice.

And yes, I know they have a personal relationship because Ross is such a big donor to Michigan. Which, again, makes it odd that he would try to sign their coach away from the school. But Ross gotta Ross.
Lot of smoke that Harbaugh to Las Vegas is essentially done.

This firing is definitely going to bring up some discussions on race, fair or not. A hot young black coach is hired, turns the franchise from shit to a winning club despite having a fairly bad QB, and is fired with rumors flying the owner is enamored with a prominent white coach. It’s not a great look.

Speaking of Harbaugh's, should John be on the hot seat? It's been 9 years since he won the Super Bowl. He has 5 playoff DNQ's in those 9 seasons and 1 playoff win, in the Wild Card round in 2013.

Maybe Fins will get Urban Meyer? Seriously, that is an atrocious move. The Watson stuff is interesting. Maybe BF implemented a “Patriot Way™” philosophy and said “I walk” if we get this guy. If ownership is set on Watson, maybe that fueled their decision.
Pure speculation on my part. I’m shocked. And glad he’s out at Miam from a Pats fan perspective. He’ll be a HC, I’m almost certain, but would love him on NE again

What are the Dolphins doing? I think Flores handled Tua poorly at times, but I also don't think he'll ever amount to anything more than the "meh" game manager he already is, so I won't blame the guy for not being willing to be married fully to that kind of player. Other than that at worst I think you could say he didn't overachieve, but even then the 2020 Dolphins didn't have 10 win talent. Just mind boggling.

To expand on this, the "hot young offensive genius" coaches everyone wants these days are invariably white. Black coaches tend to move up from the defensive ranks. I can't think of any Black OC's other than Leftwich.

Bienemy, though he has some non-football questions a team has to work through as well

I can honestly only think of Caldwell, over the last decade or so. I think he was pretty underrated too. (Of course he's no longer a young rising star. But I think your observation can go back a bit further in time, even.)

Feeling the same way. Looking from the outside this seems really dumb. Would love to have Flores back in the fold as DC, even if only for a year. He always seems to have Miami prepared and playing hard. From a pure competitive standpoint, would be great to see Miami chase the celebrity hire and implode for a few years.

My friend at work here is a huge Miami fan. We talk football all the time, I sent him a nice congratulatory text after they swept the Pats yesterday. He is apoplectic right now.

There's another coach who is self-admittedly hard to work with who's last name rhymes with Felichick. It makes you appreciate Kraft for staying out of the way for the last 20+ years when you know there have been times when he was probably cursing BB behind the scenes. Being somewhat of an asshole seems to go with the territory of being an NFL head coach.

Wonder if a coach has ever been fired after going 8-1 in their final 9 games.
Probably not but that is one of the softest 8-1 stretches. Good wins against the Ravens and Pats and a bunch of dreck. Can only beat who you play but just citing 8-1 is misleading IMO.
  • Pats (good win)
  • Saints with Ian Book
  • Giants with Mike Glennon
  • Panthers with PJ Walker / Cam Newton
  • Jets x2, one with Joe Flacco
  • Ravens (good win)
  • Texans with Tyrod Taylor

The Miami Dolphins fired their Head Coach because of his relationship with Tua? The same Miami Dolphins Owner and GM who have been involved in rumors over the last 6 months about how Tua isn't the guy, trying to get rid of him and bring in Deshawn Watson, which likely would have happened if Watson wasn't accused by 20 odd women of being a habitual sexual assaulter? They put Flores in an almost impossible situation to handle.

The Bears have also nuked GM Ryan Pace.
https://www.chicagobears.com/news/ryan-pace-matt-nagy-relieved-of-duties-with-bears

One day after concluding their disappointing 2021 season with a 31-17 loss to the Vikings, the Bears on Monday relieved general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy of their duties.
I am glad he is gone. The Mitch Trubisky debacle is one of the worst transactions in NFL history. I think Fields can be the answer to QB they have been looking for, but once again due to the cascading impact of the 2017 draft the Bears have no 1st round pick this year (would have been #7) to trade up just to get him last year.

Fish have been weird in the offensive side of the ball. Who has been hiring the coordinators. Fitz with Gailey was fair enough but then they’re trying to work Tua in and Gailey is going to be out once Fitz was gone. It didn’t make any sense.

I'd love to have Flores back but right now I'm just hoping the Jets are dumb enough to hold onto Saleh until Brian's off the market.

Saleh is fine, what are you talking about? The Jets played the Fish close and our roster is a lot worse.

Not sure why people think Flores would come back to NE. He didn't flame out and is immediately a hot candidate for another head coaching job. Also, Bill's kid is the defacto DC, there's no chance Bill would bring Flores back and hand the defense over to him.

McDaniels and Patricia came back but with their tail between their legs after failing elsewhere.

LOL I thought of that too, the grumpy guy on the sidelines with the sleeves cut off his hoodie. Great PR guy to sell tickets, right? Of course, he removed all doubt early on with not 1, not 2, but 3 SB victories in his first 5 seasons with the Patriots.

Wasn't there a report this weekend that Judge and Jones are coming back?
That’s been out since before the crazy press conference unless another report came out I missed. I thought that may have changed things. All Judge had to do was not go crazy and people in NY media would still be sucking his ass because of his goofy tough guy antics.

Harbaugh coming to town? He has to have someone big in mind.
Harbaugh has been talked about down here as the guy coming in for over a month now. The Dolphins owner is a Michigan alum and supposedly one of their largest donors. This could get good. On one hand you have Ross here who wants you and has a relationship with you and on the other you have the Raiders screwing up the timeline by making it to the Wild Card game as a team who could hand Harbaugh the keys today otherwise.

This seems like a Ross power play. What’s crazy is that as of right now Brian Flores is unemployed yet Joe Judge’s tenure lives on.

I know the Dolphins lossed both games, but if there's any opportunity to bring in Flores as a consultant this week (a la Josh Daniels a few years ago) to game plan against the Bills. That would be fantastic.

Has Lane learned enough for his act to fly with professionals?
More to the point, do you hire Lane Kiffin when you don't have a GM? Sure, some coaches come in and have a say in the GM pick; but those are coaches with some record of success.

Yeah, it starts at the lower levels of football (high school and college) where talented Black players are still steered towards positions other than QB. The "hot young offensive genius" types typically come from a QB background, which inevitably ensures that a lot of them are going to be white. Hopefully as Black QBs become more prominent at every level, more of those young offensive minds will be Black.
