Congrats to UNC. They’ve been the #1 team in the country by advanced metrics since sometime in February. Tall task ahead on Monday. Hard for me to see them doing them again but for instance Duke was able to back in 1991 against Kansas after beating UNLV so you never know.

Do you have a link to this? This is worth sharing.

I saw this and messed around with some filter start dates using mid-Feb and UNC was nothing special for a team of their level but since 3/2 they have been the most efficient team in the country. This only covers 7 games though with most teams only playing a couple games, and losing, during this span.

Right. I get the frustration with FTs for both teams but reading how he’s regressed when he was the best player on the floor in the Marquette game and maybe the Baylor one too. Silly talk.
I made the "Manek Regression" crack, as a Hendrix reference. You're right, he played well. I wondered last week if he was an NBA prospect, and the folks around here said he wasn't. Might be a late second-round flyer seemed the consensus.

I didn’t scroll back to see who said what so I wasn’t pointing you out specifically bc we as cool as Tatum and Kyrie on an off-day. I think he was asked to do a ton in this game and kept Banchero in check.

There will be a end of bench spot for a guy his size, with his shooting ability and understanding of the game with todays expanded rosters. I would guess he bounces around on a few lottery teams, maybe a low level playoff team for a couple years but don’t see him having much impact at the next level.

Yeah..you're probably right.. I've just grown tired of having a Duke alum on the broadcasting team of every UNC Duke game for the last decade... Bilas, I believe Williams at one point, Hill.. always seems to be one.
And Dick Vitale is the charter member or the Duke fan club so that doesn't help either

He’s big and physically mature and experienced and smart for the college game and should be proud of his college career forever. Some great games and big shots in huge spots.

But at the next level a 6’9” 230 24 yo rookie is not in and itself physically imposing to anyone. Doubt he has enough there there.

Edit: IOW I agree.

Kansas by 8 over UNC is my call.

UNC is playing unbelievable basketball but Kansas is the real deal.
Does seem like Kansas is a step above.. will all depend on who wins down low.. and 3 point shooting as well.

I'm surprised UNC has gotten this far as a fan..especially given the start of their year, but they've caught fire at the right time.
If this game is close coming down the stretch I've now grown to expect Caleb to put in shots at just the right time.

He had a lot of trouble last night defending and athleticism and strength only would be more of a problem for him in the NBA. He can maybe find a spot as an outside shooter, but to my eye he just doesn't have great moves/explosiveness etc around the basket.

Probably true of any typical above average college player that goes on to the elite levels of the NBA.. or moving up in any level of basketball..some times a players vulnerabilities are going to be exposed.

I remember watching Brown’s offense dismantle them in November (50 in 1H) and thinking how Hubert Davis really has his work cut out for himself. I’d say he won that battle.

How would you like to be Jon Scheyer right now? You are the man. You have the top recruiting class in the country. Normally he would get some grace following a legend. After watching what UNC did with their first year coach and the talent on the team, how long will the leash be?

He can at least say that one of the greatest college of coaches of all time lost two out of three to Hubert in his first year. I imagine it won't be a problem though because I'm sure Duke fans will be patient. /s/
Pressure goes up if UNC somehow wins on Monday.

Moore/Roach/Griffin

7-32 and 1-11 from downtown

There’s your ballgame.
yeah, Banchero was the dominant player on the floor from 15 min left to 5. You can argue whether he should have done more but he definitely showed up. Duke’s other “first round picks”…..did not.

I think there will be more patience than you think, but I may be wrong. I also think Scheyer is going to do pretty well out of the gates.

Next year is going to be surreal. First time since the 60s that the ACC won’t have one of Dean, Roy, or K on the sideline.

12-20 from the line didn't help, including the 2 bricks the 75% foul shooter threw up w/3 minutes left. Classic choke on the second shot. Back rimmed the first one, barely touched the front rim on the second one.

Actually, Smith became head coach in 1961 and if you want to go back further, you had Frank McGuire, another legend, before him; for 10 years.

Smith was the co-head baseball coach of the Air Force Academy in 1958 while stationed there as a lieutenant. Never knew that about the man.

Ankle is bothering Bacot, per Tracy
I really hate when injuries grossly impact a championship. It happened to UConn last night (Juhaz out with a broken wrist, Griffin injured all year, Westbrook turned her ankle and hobbled most of the game, Nelson-Ododa with an injured groin, and Fudd sick with a stomach ailment), and it looks like it will hit UNC today.

It's entirely possible that SC would have beaten UConn even if UConn was healthy, and that Kansas would beat UNC even if UNC was totally healthy, but UConn was seriously banged up, and this injury to Bacot is enormous. They really need a huge game out of him and that's not likely if he's hobbling around.

Carolina starters, except perhaps Love, look like someone died, when walking out to personal intros.
don’t like the energy (or lack thereof)

That was a walk on Kansas - you're not allowed to roll on the floor like that with the ball. Easy call. Refs missed it.

If Kansas is going to get away with this much hand checking and hacking it's going to be over early.

I’m assuming Manek got checked out. Plays like that make me nervous.

At first it was a cute little publicity stunt, but now that Reggie Miller is still living at Wendy’s, it’s probably time for an intervention.

Please rebound Heeels
The one thing you can say about some of these rebounds are that they're absolute bricks by Kansas..so they're coming off hard and farther out than you'd expect. Kansas is getting some lucky bounces.. although with their depth I imagine they'll be able to out-hustle UNC all game to loose balls.

Big test for UNC will be to see how Armando’s ankle looks when he returns after sitting cold.

Edit: Good move by Hubert getting him back in quickly

Kansas’ bigs are much more agile than UNC’s and the difference is noticeable.

Agree. UNC is boxing out and just caught a couple bad breaks.

And speaking of bad breaks, how did that bank shot go in??

Nice for the refs to call the third time Bacot was fouled on that rebound.

Bacot is a sneaky-good athlete. Not as good as McCormack, but it hasn’t been the mismatch I thought it might be.

Havent been on the thread so apologies if this is a stale take, but does Bacot remind anyone else of Ricky Mahorn? (Appearance more than game, but a little of that too)
