He got out of the inning, but this is some real over managing. You need to ride the hot starters as long as possible when your third best reliever is Brad Hand.

With that D, Soto really needs to walk a bajillion+1 times in the next two years to be worth more than 440M.

It was the right play. You trade a base for the chance at getting out of the inning every time. But he's just not that good out there.

Playing defense like Ted Williams is fine when you're hitting like him. It's less fine when you're hitting like Gene Tenace.

His middle name is apparently William, not Buchanonlincoln.

The upside of Thompson's pen management tonight is Suarez should be fairly fresh for a potential game 7.

The hell was he supposed to do genuflect to his holiness at third and wait to be blessed? He thought he walked and moved toward first which happens half a dozen times every game.
I think his instant jerk backward made him look like he swung since he pulled back so fast.

Tough cal. I’d be livid if I were a Padres fan, of course ha

Todd Tichenor called a checked swing a strike 34/70 times as a 3B umpire in the 2021-22 regular seasons

That's among the highest rates in MLB
(average is 30%, which would be 21/70)

So maybe not surprising that he called one there
