Wasn't Hauser injured during the playoffs last year? He was on the report with some sort of shoulder impingement a lot of the time.

Weiss also did a feature early this season about work Hauser had done to not lean back on his shot vs. NBA contests. He was a good shooter last year in the NBA and G-League, but wasn't this guy.

Just checked BBRef on Hauser out of curiosity. His ORTG is 152. Obviously lots of SSS in early-season numbers like that but holy shit. That's good for 20th.

That's pretty damn amazing.

Not to ruin the sploogefest. I love Hauser. But there is a very real chance that he is going to be unplayable in the playoffs. Teams barely hunt him now and we have no idea what happens when the hunting him is the opposing teams main focus.

Which is why the talk of trading Gallinari seems premature. He might be back for the playoffs and he is tested in ways that Hauser has not been.

Barely? My perception was that he has been hunted quite a bit and was holding his own. Your point stands that the work and prep that goes into hunting him in the playoffs will be at a different level than what he's experiencing now.

At least the good news is that Hauser has height and length at his disposal that Pritchard didn't have.
He must be having a lot of fun getting hunted by Tatum and Brown in practice.

I don't think they should trade him either, but how much can you really expect from a 34 yo 10 months after ACL surgery? That sounds a bit like the old baseball trope "when we get 'guy recovering from Tommy John' back in August it'll be like a great mid-season trade!"

Chris Godwin is 8 years younger and came back on the same accelerated timeline and he's having his worst non-rookie season by far this year.

SAM appears to be a better defender than PP. Payton played in every Celtic playoff game over the last 2 seasons (29 games ~13mpg).

If SAM is above 40% from 3 you can probably pencil him into the rotation.

That being said it's November and between now and May lots of things can happen.

but Sploogefest can re-commence ;)

My impression is guys go at him as often as possible thus far. With not great success.

I know I have tempered my views on tatum and been critical of him, but Tatums flexibility on defence makes it harder and harder to pick on a guy. Tatum or smart usually find a way to take the better players when the team's run actions. If the Cs keep playing D like this Tatum has to be in the running for some awards.

If you think that teams have "barely" hunted Hauser, you haven't watched Celtics games very carefully. Completely factually incorrect.

I know you were trying to score sophistication points by dunking on the green-glasses idiots ("sploogefest"), but you achieved the exact opposite.

Hauser's first rough shooting game, 1-6 from three. He did some other good things though. Scored on a nice high-off-the-glass layup on a cut. I thought he was going to be blocked by the help D (as happened to him a few times last year), but instead he hit a difficult finish.

I have watched the games. IMO, and feel free to disagree without being a dick, teams hunt him way less than they will in games that matter. The "barely" was in relation to the playoffs. I have no idea if he will be played off the floor in playoff games like Duncan Robinson, but I think there is a better than zero chance that happens.

I think this is reasonable and why you see playoff rotations shortened so dramatically.

I don't think anyone is saying Hauser will be playing 30mpg in the playoffs.

I'll ask this question, if Payton Pritchard can average ~13mpg in every single playoff game (29 games) over 2 years, why can't Hauser take those minutes & slightly more?

At the very least, against second units Hauser's assumed bad defense (are we even sure SAM is a bad defender?), will be somewhat hidden.

PP's consistent playoff minutes are the evidence we have that the Celtics will opt for a shooter that can be hunted in playoff games.

In last season's Finals, there were on average 11.5 minutes per game that Steph Curry was not on the floor. So, there's 11.5 minutes right there if we are worried about Hauser being hunted. If Hauser can fill the net in those minutes, it will go a long way from keeping the Celtics offense from falling asleep for those stretches when the starters are resting, which was the real problem in the Finals last year.

Pritchard shot 21% from 3 in 11.2 mpg in the same Finals. Hauser just needs to be better than that.

Perhaps he can play those 13 minutes or more. I am just offering up some caution. I think the Celtics have sorely lacked a deadly three point shooter and I have all hope that Hauser will continue to succeed and will be a weapon in the playoffs. I just think we just won't know until the playoffs.

Max Strus played about 28 mpg versus the Cs in the CFinals last year (although he did have a 87 ORtg and 114 DRtg according to BRef).

To me, one thing that Dougie looks to have is a good idea of what opposing players are trying to do when he guards them and a good idea of where his help is coming from. Obviously time will tell but it looks like to me that he's passable enough on defense that he can hold his own in most matchups/lineups.

Word.

So far both Brogdon and White have been hunted more successfully than Hauser. Is it possible that one of our playoff matchups will figure out a way to punish Hauser on court, sure. I'm imagining Jimmy Butler hunting him on switches and scoring or say Harden. But both of those guys would punish most people.

Hauser is not a black hole. There has been plenty of evidence of this so far. Teams have tried a lot. And his shooting is good enough that CJM is going to live with a few forced possessions against his middling defense in order to get the spacing and shot making that he provides. Unless and until some team figures out how to turn him into a layup line, continue sploogefest.

It’s a different caliber of hunter in the playoffs.

But if the Celtics are operating at full health he can have good and some great defenders all around him.

Matchup dependent of course, but I don’t see any evidence yet that his presence would crater a whole defense or anything like that. And so far I think it’s better than what I was expecting from the older perpetually banged up Gallo.

I'm sorry for being a dick.

My point was that teams have attacked him a lot, and stopped not because of a desire for offensive diversity, or lack of awareness that he might be weak, but because it generally hasn't been that effective.

Usually guys who get hunted in the playoffs are bad a lot of the time, and don't get hunted due to lack of regular season game-planning. If anything, Hauser's situation seems the opposite of that: teams go at him like he's wearing a bulls-eye, and he keeps holding his own for the most part.

Some enterprising basketball writer needs to write a piece on whatever it is Sam Houser did this last off-season. I’ve been looking around all that I can find is:
  • Haus says that game has greatly slowed down for him;
  • He says he has a better sense of where to be on the floor, which he says helps with the above;
  • He studied some long range shooters on other teams.
Yeah, that seems… wildly unsatisfactory. I mean, what? He book-learned his way into becoming a more than serviceable NBA player? There’s gotta be more.

Almost 30% of that came from last night's +35.

Of course single game +/- is a silly stat but this got me thinking about what was the highest +/- in a game in the NBA. That distinction belongs to Luc Mbah a Moute who posted a +57 while playing for the Houston Rockets in a 125-95 victory over the Nuggets on November 22, 2017. In that game Luc put up 13 points while going 5-5 from the field including 3-3 from three in 25:43. Also in that game Will Barton of the Nuggets was -42.

In case you are wondering, the lowest +/- in NBA history was Manny Harris who was -57 on January 11, 2011 in a Cavaliers loss to the Lakers in a game with a final score of 112-57. Somehow the Cavs only scored 25 points in the first half of that game. Every Lakers starter that night was > +40.

Anyway early season SSS aside, Hauser has been a lot of fun to watch. If he is still leading the NBA in +/- at the end of the season it will hopefully mean the Celtics have continued steamrolling their competition on their was to an NBA title.

The most impressive thing about Hauser is that he's not just a spot up shooter. Guys that can hit open threes and be not-terrible defensively are hard enough to find, but it's even harder to find guys in that JJ Redick, Kyle Korver mold who can move well enough off the ball to spring themselves open, and then get their shot off quickly and accurately to beat the closeout. That's a real weapon, and the C's are actually running plays to utilize it, not just parking Hauser in the corner. He's tall with a high, lightning-quick release; there's Korver-level upside if the defensive not-terrible-ness is for real.

If you want to do some further research, I'd be interested in the highest +/- in a game that was lost and the lowest +/- for a winning player.
Thanks in advance!

If Sam Hauser weren't a slightly goofy-looking white guy with a bad defensive rep coming into the year, no one would be at all concerned about him from watching this year's tape.

He hasn't shown anything that suggests he'll be some huge liability suddenly, and lord knows teams have tried to pick on him.

This post should be pinned.

Everyone can be beaten. Everyone does get beaten occasionally. Even Tatum gets a shoulder in the chest sometimes, and a guy just lays the ball in. Both Tatum and Brown get beaten off the dribble sometimes.

That said, Hauser absolutely has been targeted, not just because he's a goofy-looking guy, but more because who else are you going to target when it's guys like Al, JB, JT, Marcus, and Grant out there. White and Brogdon have been targeted by guys with height/weight advantages too. ISO teams have to pick on someone. And Hauser has very little film this year getting traffic coned or rag dolled, because it really hasn't happened. And it's not from a lack of trying.

FWIW, he looks kinda upright to me on defense sometimes. Like, high center of gravity. He looks like a guy who can't move laterally, except that he can. That's what I see anyway.

I think Abby and NBCSB were trying to push “the human torch” or the “blow torch” at the start of the season, something she heard from the players, since he heats up quick.

Torch Hauser?
I'm not sure there can ever be a better fitting nickname for this than Vinnie Johnson's "microwave." What's hotter and faster? Nuke?

I’m starting to think he can legit play D. His footwork tonight has been immaculate against even the very shifty Alvarado. Turned him away multiple times.
I love you, man. But, no. He is holding his own for now. He is not good guarding the ball by NBA standards. He hasn't be terrible consistently which is good.
