Breaking out from the other thread because theres only so many Fields, Harrison and BB sucks/no he doesn’t discussions to be had in the next 3 months
Red Sox fans, depending on their age, have a litany of haunting memories -Dent, Buckner, Grady, Boone, maybe if you’re very young Betts being traded. Pats fans were undeniably spoiled for 20 years with a treasure trove of amazing memories thanks to BB/Brady. But whenever I go through my annual six Three Games to Glory DVD rewatch I can’t help to think about all the things that had to go right to win those 6 Lombardis and the flip side - all the little moments that went wrong to cost the team more titles
Helmet catch seems like the obvious and undisputed #1 - everything about that play still pisses me off. Scrub player making ridiculous play, O’Hara’s blatant hold not being called, Manning not being deemed in the grasp. But there were a lot of other awful moments in that game
Neal getting hurt early on, Meriweather missing an INT, LeKevin Smith just missing an inbounds fumble recovery, BB going for it on 4th and a mile, Samuel’s missed INT. Brady jussssst missing Moss in what would have been the most epic of game winning plays arguably in sports history
SB46 brought us the Manningham catch and Welker drop
Malcolm Butler crying during the national anthem after learning he was benched was an ominous sign.
Alge Crumpler’s drop early the 2010 divisional game against the Jets killed the Pats’ offensive momentum. I still contend that 2010 team was better than some of their Super Bowl winners. they squandered their first 2 drives, Rex Ryan made some adjustments and the Pats offense went cold for too long of a stretch to ever come back.
Gronk’s injury in the 2011 AFCCG making him essentially a shell of himself in the Super Bowl
What are the moments which bother you the most in a “what if Grady had pulled Pedro” kind of way? Other than that stupid helmet catch, of course.
Perhaps it’s the still lingering numbness to SB42 15 years later but the SB46 Welker drop is the single most bothersome moment of the BB era. I just can’t think of the guy or his great moments (which he had many) without getting angry at that play. Something about losing 2 super bowls, to the same team, in similarly painful “so close so far” ways still sticks with me.
