The best version of this team is

Jackson Simmons
McAdoo
Bullock
Hairston
Page

with Brice Johnson, Dex, JP, McDonald and Hubert coming off the bench in that order.

Edit - and that 'best version' doesn't beat Duke tonight or probably even at home but we at least make the tournament.

saw this posted: "UNC's starters played 34, 36, 34, 34, and 30 minutes, with a backup getting 20"

...and UNC stayed in it till the end...hmmm....

Yeah they played their best game of the season by playing their best players a ton of minutes.

It's crazy how revolutionary that is. And then in the post-game Roy goes on a rant about how he knows his team and no one else knows dickens (when talking about inserting P.J. Hairston). Well, lets see here, we've (fans) been saying that Hairston should start for about 10 games now. And then when you did start him we played our best game. Maybe some people do know a little bit?

Watch your mouth there... you don't know dickens!

everybody’s saying, ‘Well, you’re going to put P.J. in for someone
else.’ But nobody knows my team. It’s popular to say who the hell is
supposed to be in the lineup when you don’t know what in the dickens
you’re talking about.”

PJ only had 29, a career high and the most any Tar Heel has scored this season. But yes, Roy, dickens. Dickens.

Dickens of a win for the Heels.  They scored 40 points more than the Cavaliers have been allowing in average, and actually made 73% of their free throws.  Paige had a good overall game, and yeah, Hairston should probably stay in the starting lineup.  If they can get the job done at GT midweek, they should have some decent momentum and motivation going into next weekend's home game against State.

Total dickens. I, and every other person who watched Carolina, apparently was right that putting the best players on the court for the most minutes makes the team better at basketball.

Nutty sport.

Duke is trying to pull off a near replication of the last minute miracle game @ Maryland again.

The big key should be seeing which Alex Len shows up today, the 23 point, 4 block performance against Kentucky, or the 10 point, 1 block game against UNC.

If his head is in the game today, I could see Maryland pulling off the upset.
I knew I'd be right eventually... but man, I thought for sure the Terps were going to blow that game.  Maryland really should have won by 15+ if it weren't for all the turnovers.

Maryland hadnt played in a week - despite the turnovers they were clearly ready for this game. Poor defense by Duke on the last play - Plumlee fouling out left the lane open.

3rd game in 6 games for Duke - the crazy BC travel game, then UNC...not a huge surprise Duke was a bit off. Plumlee went up agaisnt a taller guy and lost. Ah well, no big deal - just keep hoping Kelly comes back this season. Ii have a feeling he'll be back for ACC tournament, but his touch and conditioning will be pretty damn poor.

Here
Just got back from the game. That was the most Godawful sporting event I've ever witnessed. The amazing thing is I can say that despite the game being of a down-to-the-wire nature. I'm going to look up the exact number now, but if I had to make a guess about how many fouls were called in the second half alone, it would be 39.

Ok, now on to check...

Ok, I can't find the totals by half, but it was 49 for the game, and I believe there were less than ten total in the first half. I think it was between 40-43 fouls in the second half. Keep in mind there was not one intentional foul in the entire game either. I paid $45 a seat to see that.

I don't have any evidence but it seems like many Duke games are like that with a ton of fouls in the 2nd half.  I always chalked it up to Coach K's endless "working" of the refs and finally they just start calling everything.

From the press conference.

Coach K: "I have a great deal of respect for Maryland. If it was such a rivalry, they'd still be in the ACC."

Maryland made more free throws than Duke attempted. The fouls in this one were against Duke.

This is a terrifying game for UNC tonight.  Games against teams like GT are pretty much must-wins at this point but Roy's teams have always played badly in Atlanta, and this team is no lock to begin with.  Hopefully Saturday's shooting touch carries over and PJ keeps lighting it up.

surprisingly easy win for UNC, got big games from James Michael and Leslie McDonald to make up for Reg and PJ being a little cold.  Gotta win Saturday vs. State.

State is a must win game. Thankfully, it's at home. I watched State play prior to the UNC game and jesus they looked really good. I think both teams are picking up steam and coming into their own, although State is obviously a much better, more experienced and more complete team than Carolina this year. We will need either(both?) PJ and Reggie to regain the shooting touch and McAdoo will be the key, because when we run our small line-up he's going to have a lot of work to do boxing out inside. It would also be great to get Howell in early foul trouble, which he can be goated into.

Super excited for the game.

UNC gets up ten early in the 2nd half but is in the process of folding like a cheap tent.  Can't guard another 3 point shooter (Wood).

What a game. Up and down the floor, non-stop action. Frankly, I'm glad the refs have pretty much swallowed their whistles for the most part.

EDIT - It's getting away from State now. When they made that huge stop on the NC fast break, I figured that was when they'd stem the Heels' tide. But they turned it over in their end, and now they're down 8.

EDIT - It's a 16-2 run for UNC since the TV timeout at 7:44. Four fouls and 4 turnovers for State over that span.

yep hats off to the Deacs for pulling that one off.  They've been a tough team in Winston-Salem during conference play, beating NC State and Miami and only losing by 5 to Duke.

Ryan Kelly seems to have put away the crutches, hopefully for good. Krzyzewski said Kelly would be back “soon,” but followed up by saying that he’s not sure what “soon” means. Kelly suggested that there is no way he’s missing the Senior Day game against Virginia Tech and might be back sooner.

Plumlee says he doesn’t foresee any problems plugging Kelly back into the lineup. “Ryan’s not coming in to fill in a role in which he’s ball dominant. He’s a smart player, a shooter and a lot of us have played with him. I have no worries [about the dynamics].”

Great news.

another solid road win for UNC at Clemson.  Florida State comes to Chapel Hill Sunday.  Then @ Maryland and home against Duke to close the season.

Gave back a little too much of the cushion they had built up for my liking. But they did get the road win, and have looked better since Miami ran them off the court. I think Paige in particular has been more consistent this month.

free throw shooting continues to be horrendous.  Reggie Bullock has surprisingly missed a ton of them lately.

You realize Duke is undefeated with Ryan Kelly, right? And undefeated at home? Nice bet though.

I hate it but Duke's the favorite, maybe a big favorite, to win the title.  Totally different team when 34 is playing and when he isn't.  He's an elite defender, stretches defenses, giving everybody more room, and a shot maker.

At +290 with a spread of 8. It was a great bet. I headed it and had legit chance at a nice payoff. But anyway.

Edit: meant hedged. So no blood. Obviously I don't bet it if I know Kelly is playing. At least not with that number.

UNC beat the stuffing out of Florida State to keep their run going.  Might even get back in the top 25 this week.

Here's hoping they don't look past Wednesday's game at Maryland.  They have been a fun team to watch, and a good team, for the better part of a month (the dismantling @ Miami notwithstanding). It is jarring how much they struggle when they bring any of the bigs in and try to run a more conventional offense, though.

UNC picked up another key 2014 recruit today with Justin Jackson from Texas announcing his decision.  He's one of the top small forwards in the rankings.

Hairston and McAdoo crumpled to the court within about two minutes of one another, calling to mind Kendall Marshall (minus the title hopes).  Both came back into the game looking fine minutes later.

Maryland was overwhelming them on the boards early and most of the first half was a one or two point game, buy the Heels scored the last 7, and have a 14 point lead with just under 12 to play.

edit: has this team never seen a press before?

edit2: they settled down and closed out a fairly comfortable road win, 79-68. Bullock and Hairston carried the team, combining for 41 points, 20 rebounds and 6 steals
