What a shitshow by City.  They may not even make third place and the Europa League if this result holds up.

Assuming he doesn't pull a rabbit out of his hat and somehow beat both Bayern and Roma to advance, does Pelligrini have to win the league to keep his job?

Yaya Toure with a straight red.  So to recap, City in basically a must win down are down to 9 men and down a goal...and they lose their best player vs Bayern and Roma.
I didn't see the foul, but isn't a red in Champions League only 1 game unless they add a violent conduct charge?

Hmmm...you may be right actually.  Twitter saying he'll only miss Bayern.

He did get sent off for a shove to the face though...however it was soft.

California. Duh.
So, to sum up:

Liverpool - lost while fielding a mostly reserve side
Arsenal - only could get a draw after blowing a 3 goal lead
City - lost at home to the weakest team in the group, finishing with 9 men
Chelsea - blew a chance to win by missing a penalty

ENGLAND!

Best League in the World, obviously.

Does anyone else watch Multimatch 90 on Fox Soccer Plus? I'm enjoying the redzone-ification of all sports, but that might just be my ADD talking.

Negative football. Passing from the back in fine.....if you have players that are comfortable doing it. Infuriating half so far. Sad thing is, I expecting them to concede.

So where do we stand in each group?

A - Atletico is in. If Olympiakos can hold onto a 1-0 lead against Malmo, then an Atleti win at Juve will see the Greeks advance in second place in the group.  Conversely, a 2-0 win for Juve will win them the group.

B - Madrid will win the group.  Basel takes second if they can hold on for a win or draw against Liverpool.

C - Bayer is in.  As things stand (both matches 0-0), Bayer will win the group and Monaco will get second.  A Monaco win and a Bayer draw will see Monaco win the group.  Zenit needs to beat Monaco to advance, but cannot win the group.

D - Dortmund and Arsenal are in.  Assuming Arsenal do not choke away another 3-0 lead (perhaps not a safe assumption), they need Anderlecht to find a goal to win the group.  The referee, who just denied a pretty good penalty shout from Anderlecht, isn't helping.

First half down and they have no ideas. Mignolet would be passing back if there were a target behind him. I've lost count of the number of times Johnson has simply let his man go. The commentary keeps blaming Lovren and Skrtel for ball watching, but Johnson either isn't following or isn't communicating.

The entire team is looking for something that isn't there. The de facto play is to find Sterling and hope he produces a bit of magic. He's made one bad decision cutting the ball back instead of shooting but he isn't finding much otherwise.

Lambert is absolutely the wrong player for a game like this. He's totally surrounded and too slow to either make his own space or doesn't have what's needed to hold the ball up long enough for support to arrive.

I don't see a way back with this group. Borini wasn't named in the squad- I simply can't understand that. They couldn't break through mighty Sunderland with this side, what changed that makes them a threat here?

I really have no idea what Rodgers was thinking with his team selection.  You have to win.  Put Lambert and Borini together up top and Sterling and either Coutinho or Lallana on the wings.  Instead, he's got four central midfielders, Sterling, and Lambert.

If both end up with 9 points in this scenario, wouldn't Olympiacos need to make up the –8 GD vis-a-vis Juventus?

I believe the tiebreaker is goal differential in h-2-h matches and then away goals in h-2-h matches - Olympiacos would win that on away goals.

The approach is just awful. Everywhere on the pitch the LFC player squares up to his nearest teammate and plays the ball on the ground. When was the last time a pass bypassed a player (or defender)? I like the introduction of Lazar, but make some bloody runs into space. They aren't Barcelona and this quasi Tiki-Taka ain't working.

Not being able to watch Juvé (Thanks for ruining my AT&T logins, Frontier Communications!) is fucking killing me.

Ah, got it. GD in "matches played among the teams in question" is the key phrase there!

I've Been banging on the Borini drum for some time, he should have been starting a while ago. Looking back, what was the point in keeping him and not even putting him into the team sheet when you had Sunderland willing to pay 15 million for him? Something is horribly wrong between Rodgers and the so called "transfer committee". FSG has a big problem on their hands now.

I agree with this. Not so much cos i rate Borini but i think £15M is a decent price. But then i think it was wages that held the deal up and Borini wanted to fight for his Liverpool place.  That said these transfers haven't worked so far.

I never thought Rodgers job was in real jeopardy but i do now.

That was red?  Kind of an awkward and silly looking move but he was probably just starting to push his arm out there to jostle a player who figured to be getting a lot closer.  Much worse happens about a million times a match in terms of forearms to the face on headers, etc.

At worst that's a yellow. Red is horrendously bad.

It's soft, but what the fuck is he doing...don't even give the ref a chance to pull out a red. I mean there was no need to raise the arm/hand at all.

It looks really stupid but I think he's basically just swinging his arm out to feel where the player might be and get ready to ward him off the ball a bit, except the whole movement was awkward, his arm started swinging faster than he intended, and the player ended up being further away and shorter, such that instead of just pushing against his chest a bit to hold him off, Markovic hits him in the nose.

Dumb stuff but I really don't think he intentionally whacked the guy in the face for no reason.

Where was that the first 75 mins? Deserve to crash out. Had a great draw for this group and they blew it. Not sure when we're back here again. Just feel awful.
