Joe Hesketh is going to love this:

Despite having put on a good face, Ryan says he felt like a “leftover” under the new GM, half of an arranged marriage “who could be replaced at any time.”
“I wasn’t the boss anymore,” Ryan says. “I was just a guy. Whether they want to say it or not, all of a sudden I became less important to the team.”
[...]
“The minute I felt uncomfortable, I should have said something to Woody and made sure he knew exactly how I felt,” Rex says. “But when hires are made after you’re hired, I didn’t want to question that. How can I preach that I’m all on board if I do that?”

That's a pretty awesome series of quotes. In one article, someone claims the team lacked accountability, and he gets pissed off. In the other article, he tries to distance himself from any issues last year, by saying he wasn't the boss.

That's a boon for us.

I have noticed this offseason that no more than 10 days pass without another blast from Buffalo. You can almost organize your life around it.

Here's the deal from my perspective. I watched Rex labor for years down here quiet as a church mouse under Brian Billick. When he went to NY, it was at least a fair question that Rex's bluster was on cue from Woody -- *do this, Rex, I need to claim the town.*

Well no longer. The Bills own their market, from Buffalo/Toronto, east as far as the VT/MA border, west to the NY line, and south to the NYC burbs and the PA border or thereabouts.

This is who Rex is.

Indeed, because of course it's been what I've been saying all along.

I almost feel bad for Bills fans, because there's no way this is going to end well. They may get a temporary boost from Rex, but in the end, he's a Ryan through and through, which means he's only interested in himself.

I love how it is never Rex's fault. Always someone else's.

Ryan thought his 2010 team should have been his Super Bowl squad, and he wanted to keep it together for one more run. But the Jets lost some key free agents
I am sure other teams would like to keep all their pieces as well, this is a stupid sentence.

Going into the 2014 season, the Jets had deficiencies at critical positions, including cornerback and receiver, but Ryan believed those holes could be mended to make the team competitive. The agent for All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis called the Jets about his returning to the team, but the Jets weren’t interested in their onetime star. (A year later they brought him back on a $70 million contract.)....According to multiple members of Ryan’s Jets staff, frustrations ran high when the team didn’t pursue free-agent wideout DeSean Jackson and when pleas to select Clemson receiver Martavis Bryant on the third day of the draft were ignored. (The Jets drafted two receivers in the fourth round before the Steelers took Bryant, who had eight TDs as a rookie: )
God help any team that puts Rex in charge of their cap management. Idzik may have not been a good GM but at least he cleaned up the cap for the Jets. Somehow Rex only wanted the good WR they did not select, not the two they took.

Rex is loved by the press, I respect his defensive chops but Rex being the Bills coach is a massive win for the Pats. He has shown no ability to develop a QB in a league where if you don't have at least a top 10 QB you are doomed.

@JosinaAnderson: Rex Ryan to start his presser: First thing I want to say is that my pitch made the plate. Tom Brady needs to keep his elbow up. #Bills

To be fair, Rex doesn't have all those rings tugging at his elbow

Just... why the fuck does Rex even know about Brady's first pitch? He has a truly unhealthy obsession with the Pats.

I mean what is unhealthy about it?  He lost weight and got a brand new job because of it.  How does it hinder his life?  Less time with his wife's feet?

He's parlayed the obsession into several million dollars. Good for him (bad for the Bills).

OK, but really, how many coordinators can you name who are "personalities"?  Rob Ryan?  And not just going on what we know about former-HC-now-coordinators when they were in the top seat.  Basically nobody lets their freak flag fly when they're a coordinator.

The sun will rise, the sun will set, and Rex Ryan will never shut up

The playoffs? The Bills?
"I think we will," Ryan said matter-of-factly. "Yep, I think we will."

Good ole Rex and his predictions.

"I can guarantee you one thing: Teams aren't going to want to play us, I can tell you that much," he said. "You'll see.

Ah, the old "Tom Brady hates playing us" theme

He acknowledged that the quarterback situation is "not an ideal situation or there already would be one guy there. But we have enough talent there so that, when it's all said and done, we'll be fine."

Already hedging and making his excuses before the season begins - if they don't improve upon 2014, all he will have to say is "I told you in June, we need more talent at QB"

I know one thing: We ain't hiding, we ain't hiding from anybody -- New England, the Jets, anybody else. We'll take on all challenges, and I'm looking forward to it.

Another blast from the past - taking on all comers. You play the schedule, Rex. Everyone does. Other teams don't just call you up on Monday or Tuesday and say "hey we want to challenge your team this Sunday"

Percy Harvin, Charles Clay, Shady McCoy, Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, Fred Jackson...not too shabby. And beware Tyrod Taylor, creeping up the depth chart.

Here
The Bills signed Wayne Hunter, who's been out of the league since 2012. That O line gun be sweet.

They weren't a historically defense by any stretch but they did have one if the best defenses on the league last year.
Now Rex needs to get the credit for it.

That is a great quote. Do what we want, and not what we can...

Ok....Bit of a contrast to "do your job".

If you believe that:  (1) the Bills D was one of the best in the NFL last year, (2) they added to it through the draft and free agency and (3) Rex Ryan is one of the best defensive minds and coaches in the NFL, then it's not crazy to believe that the Bills D could be truly great this season.  Sadly, I think they are going to be a royal pain in the ass and the thought of Jimmy G getting one of his early baptism games against that D is unpleasant.

But bragging about the D in June is very hard to countenance.  Along the lines of SJH's comment, it's right down the middle of the Rex playbook.  And having seen Rex continually write checks that his teams could not cash, seeing his players follow the script so closely is fun stuff.  Last, going from something like "truly great" or even "historically great" to "best ever" is utterly insane.  There is simply no reason to go that far and I hope it provides some extra juice for opposing offenses.

It never ceases to amaze me how Rex can get these guys to buy into the bluster.  Marcell--you've been in the AFC East for four years and you know Rex isn't that great, so why would you believe he can magically make you the 85 Bears?

The irony is that buying into the Rex Media Machine is counter-productive to the players and the team, on the whole.  Rex's entire strategy is media-centric: be quotable, be colorful, get the players to like you by having no discipline and being very slow to bench them ("he's great to play for!") so they'll say nice things about you even after tough losses.   In this way, Rex builds a defensive bulwark against negative media attention, which in turn helps him keep his job far longer than he needs to.

It's all bread and circuses.

But not to the owner ... looking to make his mark and energize the franchise.

We live in the hotsportztake era.  Common to both sports and journalism now is complete lack of accountability.  The writers have none and the coaches have none absent a GM or owner who is seriously focused on performance.  Now you'd think it might be the opposite with search capabilities that allow anyone to hunt down nonsense and put people on the record.  But it isn't.

Rex is incorrigible.  Boast after boast, and when he falls short he acts like a lab puppy who has just gotten caught ripping up a pair of shoes.  But then he does it again, and the media turn the page because they get good copy from him (and rue the day when they should be held accountable).

Bread circuses and bullshit.  By the time it wears thin with the people who count -- the players -- Rex will turn the roster over again.

I appreciate that the knowledgeable hockey fans let me get my 15-20 stupid hockey posts in during the offseason.

It will have nothing to do with his media strategy, which will save him three years from now when his defense gets old and he still has no QB.

“@MikeGarafolo: Per that press release, Aaron Kromer allegedly confronted 3 boys, threw their fishing pole in the water and threatened to kill one’s family.”

Buffalo Bills Offensive Coach Arrested by WCSO

On Saturday night deputies with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Winston lane at Inlet Beach in Walton County, Fla in reference to a battery.

When they arrived deputies spoke to the caller and learned three boys had been fishing on the beach when the suspect, later identified as Buffalo Bills Offensive Line Coach Aaron Kromer, and the suspect’s son confronted them over the use of beach chairs left by a beach access.

Victim’s told deputies Kromer grabbed their fishing pole and threw the pole into the water and then pushed one of the boys to the ground and punched him in the face. It was stated Kromer then told the boys to return the chairs to where they found them.

The victim stated Kromer also told him if he reported him to the police he would kill his family.

Kromer was subsequently arrested early Sunday morning on a misdemeanor battery charge and transported and booked into the Walton County Jail. He has since been released on bond.

WCSO is continuing to investigate and additional charges may be filed. WCSO executive staff will be reviewing this case first thing Monday morning when the redacted arrest report will be made available. Thank you for your cooperation and patience.

So this was over the use of beach chairs while kids fished? My only question is the level of alcohol consumption to provoke a an alleged punch in the face and threat to kill the kid's family if the matter were reported to police.

It's actually an interesting question whether non job related infractions should be a basis for discipline -- but that bridge has been crossed and burned.

IF, IF these particular allegations have merit, it's hard to think of extenuating circumstances sufficient to preserve his job. And it's close to impossible to avoid putting him on paid leave while it is determined whether he did these two things.

Some defense along the following lines may be in the works -- it was dark; I was scared.

Problem with that is if he actually threatened to kill the kid's family, after the punch was thrown and he was no longer scared.

Thought bubble:

So he got poked in the eye; a shiner. That's how we Ryan kids settled out differences grownin' up. And that's how our old man would settle 'em when he'd tear into our ass. Neighbors' dads would do it too; we looked out for each other.

I don't know what the big effin' deal is here.

Shh. You're ruining my narrative of Rex's typical lack of attention to details.

He let his players run wild with the Jets; he's going to do the same here, and it will result in sloppy play after summers of big talk, disappointing years, and everyone getting blamed for it expect the Teflon Mouth.

I mean, really: one of his coaches is running around punching children, and he's got a player harassing a porn star on Twitter. Rexy just calls that "Tuesday."
