If results hold, Colombia will be the 3rd place in Group F with four points.

Unless Costa Rica pulls off an unexpected result against Brazil, Group E's 3rd place will wind up with two points.  That would mean Group B (Thailand) and Group E (Costa Rica/Spain/South Korea) would be the losers in the 3rd place advancement.

In that scenario, US plays Colombia, Germany plays Sweden, Japan plays Netherlands, and Canada plays Switzerland.  I think.

EDIT: And Sweden should be rooting for Brazil.  If Costa Rica wins and the Spain/South Korea match produces a winner, the Swedes are out.  If CR ties Brazil 1-1 and the Spain/SK match isn't a draw, then they'd have to draw lots between CR and Sweden.

Columbia's keeper just picked up a yellow card, meaning she will be suspended for the next round. That's a nice bonus for the US if that is who they are playing.

That is cool (and it's Colombia with an "o" -- no bfd, just fyi -- one of those common typos)

In Brazil-Costa Rica, they're saying that despite the game being only half-over, Costa Rica is eliminated.  I don't understand, why is that?

That wasn't the case. Had they won they would have finished ahead of South Korea with 5 points.

Soccer does a lot of "live tables"--perhaps they were saying that if nothing changed from the current scores in the group, they were out.

US plays Colombia on Monday at 8 pm, with the winner getting the winner of China-Cameroon next Friday.

Germany vs. Sweden, and France vs. South Korea are the other side of our bracket.

The other side has:

Brazil vs. Australia & Japan vs. Netherlands

Norway vs. England & Canada vs. Switzerland

The teams in the US mini-bracket are ranked #16, #28, and #53.  The other half of our side of the bracket has #1, #3, #5, and #18. Yikes. Very favorable for the US.

The only small issue is that China/Cameroon play two days before US/Colombia, so obviously they'll be better rested for the quarter. Can't ask for an easier draw after a very tough opening pool, though, as you said.

Their annual grudge match with Princeton is a must-see.

Yeah, this broke very nicely for the USA.  I'd say Germany is less than 50/50 to come out of its mini-bracket, and that the USA now probably wins the most if you played it out 1,000 times.  Except they'd probably get tired of doing it eventually.

Edit: Betfair now has Germany very slight favorites at +240 vs the USA at +270.  Next closest is France at 8-1.

It's actually comical the way it worked.

--Every other mini-bracket has at least 3 of the top 11 teams in the world.

--The 2 lowest ranked teams left are part of the 4 teams in the US mini-bracket.

--In the other 3 mini-brackets, the rankings of the 12 teams add up to 104. In just the US bracket, the 3 non-US teams add up to 97.

Now watch Colombia take the US at least to extra time. I watched a lot of their two games against France and England, and they're a legitimately decent team...the US had better not sleep on them. (In particular, Lady Andrade showed off some Ronaldo-esque dribbling skillz against England last night.)

There were also the criticisms from longtime fans. The team was tactically outdated. It was built around a long-balls-and-headers approach that catered to Wambach and familiar, marketable teammates like Alex Morgan, as if the World Cup were a nostalgia tour for the 2012 Olympics. For all of its attacking talent, the squad looked rough-hewn and kludgy in an era of increasing technical sophistication in women’s soccer. It was predictable. It was awe without shock. And fairly or not, much of the blame for this was laid at the feet of Abby Wambach — who was never great with her feet to begin with.

Thank GOD.

Between the homerism on Fox, the constant use of the players' first names as if they were on a U9 house league team--even on ostensibly sophisticated outlets like Howler--and the potting up of screaming tweens every time there was a sub, I was starting to think the mass media had lost its collective minds and were determined to treat the US women like there wasn't a serious competition going on.

If Germany plays the U.S. down the road as well as they just played Sweden, it will be over in 20 minutes. They were better organized, more creative, and more athletic than Sweden. And it's not like the US covered itself in glory against Sweden.

Germany
France is dominating South Korea.
Half time score is 2-0, but it probably was over after 10minutes. First goal was a lucky roller after a nice buildup. Second goal in 8th minute from Elodie Thomis was some good passing game from the French, but the Koreans were in majority and simply too far away.
French girls are dominating technically (as anticipated) and physically (not just bigger but a lot faster, too).

Haven´t seen any better teams than France and Germany at this tournament, although both have failed to impress with consistency and struggled with some opponents - Germany had trouble with Norway and France had problems with Colombia.
I guess both will play offensively, Germany will have some problems to defend. Annike Krahn is slow as a brick and Saskia Bartusiak is out with two yellows, so the central defense could have some issues avec Mademoiselle LeSommer.

Usually, I would say the Americans are good enough to challenge both France and Germany, but they are accustomed to dominate the game and possession, so I wonder how a France/Germany vs. USA match will end. I don´t think the USA has the firepower they had in years past and I don´t know if they can beat bigger teams on creativity.
I think a potential final vs. teams like Canada, Switzerland, Norway or Japan will be tougher/closer, as those teams are used to defend.

As I write this, Eugenie LeSommer dribbles past 3 Koreans, serves it for Delie and it´s 3-0 right after the half.

Giver her a ball and a yard of turf doesn't have the same ring to it does it? The Sultans gawk. Lots of goalkeeper spillages and soft parries leading to goals...is it poor keeping or down to the turf? It's a Kicker...Kicker Conspiracy...i think. I don't like that footie players play on the same surface I play on when i play a gemme of fives. That shit gives you friction burns and the rubber balls get everywhere. Play the fuckin tournie on grass or fuck off in future.  Starks Park is a better field of play than I'm seeing at this World Cup.

Aside from that and the fact the best player is not at these games cos Scotland yet again fell to the fuckin Netherlands I do love the way the lassies play the game. They never make too much of it when they get elbowed in the face. I'm rooting for England, it doesae bother me none.

Why don't they put positions next to players on TV when they are showing lineups. You're trying to grow the game, give out some basic info.

Wtf is with the lack of attendance at these games? It looks like it's about 65% empty. (Charitably.)

It's women's soccer in Canada?

Seriously.  Americans are pretty much the only people in the world who give a shit.

It doesn't help that they put this game in Edmonton and didn't schedule any games anywhere near Toronto.

All things considered, I'd rather Holiday get a yellow tonight than carry a card into the quarters.

Still a shitty call, though, for what was more clumsy than menacing.

I don't watch soccer much, definitely a casual observer, but i was talking to a co-worker today about how I like the Women's game better than the men's because it doesn't feel like they dive as much, or stay on the ground as long when they do.

Then I got to start watching Colombia play.

Somebody needs to legitimately take this Vidal bitch out hard, maybe it'll get her to cut the shit a little.

Does soccer work that way?
