Awesome. Stealing a game in Houston to kick things off is huge. If nothing else it shows that Washington isn’t just going to be pushed aside.

McCarver Park
On to Game 2, and Strasburg should deliver a win tomorrow night. Game 3 gets a bunch dicier for the Nationals, but at least they're at home for 3-4-5.

Gurriel has gotten a couple nice hits the last couple of games, but in general right now only Springer & Altuve are dangerous in that lineup.

Brantley was a wonderful addition but he's dried up in October. and we know Bregman's October stats.

the randomness of October.

A 35 year old who threw 112 tough pitches in 5 innings, you're suggesting he come back on no days rest for another 50 pitches or so? Just want to be clear on this.

I didn’t see every pitch, but I saw zero bad calls from the plate umpire. His zone matched the box. Did he look that good to everyone else all game?
I thought Porter was fantastic tonight. It wasn't just the box imho, it was his consistency.

As a side note, I suspect all of these guys are pretty emotional about Eric Coopers death earlier in the week.

Those are some good takes by Bregman.
That was a ridiculous sequence of pitch calls. After having thrown 4 straight balls to Brantley (well, according to the dipshit behind the plate anyway) there’s no way Bregman expands the zone and helps out a guy who walked 7 per 9 this season. You can’t grove one, but you have to go fastballs to the corners there.

If the Nats close the deal, anything could happen. They could actually pull off a championship.

But they have mortgaged a lot tonight. If they lose, I say Astros in 5.
Nats have a clear advantage at home with Houston losing the DH and no 4th starter. I’d be shocked if the Nats don’t take 2 of 3 in Washington.

I think he does a really good job for the Fox broadcast's analyst team. He's pretty insightful in small doses. He's horrible on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. I don't get it.
Studio analyst and game analyst are very different jobs. The studio job is far more scripted. In a game situation, you have to be able to react quickly to what is happening. He's good at the former and bad at the latter.

My guess would be that the sheer volume of words required for in-game commentary is going to push many otherwise excellent analysts beyond the limits of their ability to make insightful statements. In studio, there's not that same volume requirement, so he can actually be thoughtful on a more consistent basis.

It can be argued that losing Kendrick's bat (or for surely Zimmerman) or Cabrera's glove, is a bigger loss to Wash than losing Alvarez for Hou, who's been a nothing for 7 games. Greinke is also a better hitter than any of the Wash starters, IIRC.
