Why is everyone killing Caldwell and Marrone? Is Caldwell who insisted on Bortles? I thought Jax had some good players.
I don’t have a problem with Marrone. Against the grain, I thought he would be good in Jax. He was as he almost made the SB. Have to see how much he can get back from the Coughlin fuckery.
Caldwell has been GM for 7 years, with Coughlin over him for the past 3 years. Besides Bortles, Caldwell also owns the Julius Thomas signing, and he stuck with Gus Bradley a year too long. He’s had more than his share of bad luck (Joeckel, Fowler, et al.), but I think the Jaguars would benefit from new leadership. If I owned the club, Caldwell isn’t the guy I’d choose to make the four 1st-round selections the Jaguars have in the next two drafts.
I’m more ambivalent on the decision to keep Marrone. The team quit on him two years in a row, but we now know that Coughlin’s hypocritical behavior made it impossible to maintain any sort of positive culture. Having made the decision not to clean house completely, I understand the desire to see what Marrone can do with a non-toxic front office. That said, if I were calling the shots I would have cleaned house completely, including Marrone; there’s a lot to be said for a fresh start.
