There are threads about individual Maine Celtics, but thought this would be a useful catch-all thread for observations and news.

Went to the game today against the Gold, the Nuggets' team. Highly entertaining, as the Expo always is.

Observations:
- The Gold have Jay Huff, out of Virginia, and he seems like he could be useful big for someone - seemed more athletic than Kornet and drained threes from the top. 28 points on 11-19 shooting in 34 minutes. I know you can't take too much away from bigs in the G League, since they're often pretty unopposed, but he was fun to watch and the other dudes looking up to him.

- Walsh is legit athletic. Was throwing down windmills and through-the-legs dunks in warmups, and in-game had more than one flying dunk put-back. But he's definitely got that bull-in-a-china-shop thing going on. In warm-ups, you could tell he was struggling a bit with his shot, and it comes off his hands weird, with a little sideways rotation. But then he was 4-8 from three in game! Regardless, he does not stand out on the G-league floor — but there were a lot of good players out there today.

- JD can get to his little teardrop at this level at will and hits them at a good clip, his shot is smooth and he's taking it like a first-rate scorer (whether he is or not) off of little screens and off the dribble. He went for 19/8/11 and it was a noticable difference when he was on the floor vs. not in terms of flow of the offense and his decision-making was better than DJ Steward's. But he's very aggressive and that leads to turnovers and his three all came late when the Gold pulled away.

- Drew Peterson reminded my son of Hauser in person. And he can shoot it, for sure, but he's not as big as Hauser and that probably matters on D.

- Their point guard, Gillespie, played at Villanova and basically didn't come off the floor - 45 minutes. Tidy little 22/9/15 on the night. Doubt he's big enough for the NBA, but dude can ball.

Peterson is a couple inches taller than Hauser, but not as heavy. I imagine it's gonna take him a couple years on an nba conditioning program to gain the combat muscles needed. It took Hauser a year+, I imagine the same applies here.

Former Big 5 Most Improved Player Taylor Funk has been traded from the Maine Celtics to the Capital City Go-Go, whom we play on Jan. 5, in exchange for Rob Edwards coming back from the Cleveland Charge and the returning player rights to Justin James (who is I don't know where). Sadly, we gave up returning rights for Luca Samanic, who's been getting very small amounts of minutes for the Jazz.

Does anybody know what the deal is with Tony Snell? I can't remember a G League player with such an NBA pedigree sticking it out like this. I remember Jimmer, Thabeet and a couple others but nobody who was an established NBA player like Snell.

I was assuming it was a personality thing, but didn't know. Your comment had me looking it up, and...

They may be holding to him for a 'emergency, break glass' thing. No clue if the diagnosis is related at all.

If you're trying to build "Celtic culture" it would make sense to me to try to bring in "player-coaches" like Snell (and maybe pay them more?) to instill work habits, how to act like a pro, the way to be a long-term end-of-bench option, trying to fit a role in the system, etc. Right now, Luke and Hauser, especially, did lots of time in the G League and are now mostly rotation players on the best team in the league.

I really have no idea, though, how sophisticated the pipeline is, how the Celtics look at the G League in terms of player development, how akin it is to baseball minor leagues, etc.

I remembered an article talking about how the Celtics were looking at the Maine Red Claws in terms of developing NBA role players. Ran across this, which mentioned how it was also being used to develop a coach streamline too.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/chrisgrenham/2020/02/04/brad-stevens-celtics-utilize-g-league-for-more-than-just-player-development/

Old article from a decade ago: https://www.espn.com/blog/boston/celtics/post/_/id/4715058/celtics-building-synergy-with-red-claws

And I guess this is as close as I'm gonna get right now: https://sportmanagementhub.com/remy-cofield-maine-red-claws-gm/

The coaching pipeline angle is interesting. I wonder if things ever get a little weird where a team wants to share all kinds of terminology and strategy, but then the players they're developing are potentially going to other teams? Maybe there isn't that much "secret playbook" in the NBA, but would an NBA team ever add a coach/player from the G League to give them intel on beating a potential playoff opponent? Would that be kosher?

You know you’ve done something great, or not, when a rule or a stat is named after you. One thing you don’t want is to hang up, is “A Snell.”

Game recap
https://maine.gleague.nba.com/news/game-recap-013124

Walsh isn't exactly dominating on either side of the floor.
JDD on the other hand is putting up some nice counting numbers (G-League and all)
Peterson is 45.6% from 3 over 15 games

https://stats.gleague.nba.com/team/1612709915/players-traditional/?sort=PTS&dir=1
By the eye test, after seeing my first ever Maine Celtics game recently:

- There may very well be an NBA player inside Walsh; he's just RAW everywhere (offense, defense, kicking game). He'll be the guy to watch next Summer League to see if he's made any sort of leap.
- JDD can put up numbers, but don't see him being much more than a deep bench player to be honest. His numbers are a byproduct of the competition.
- Peterson can shoot. That is all I have.

Here
NBA players are fully vested with full health for their family after 3 years. I’m not sure what is added at 10 but Snell will be fine.
He’s made 53 million dollars in his playing career. If he’s spent it all, such that he can’t afford health insurance for his family, he can go work at Starbucks.

This whole campaign people are running to get that 10th year is something.

This is essentially a redshirt year for Walsh, IMO. But if he's not at least getting a few minutes here and there off the C's bench next season, that'll be worrisome.

With the stage the Celtics are at and will be for the foreseeable future it's going to be tough for guys like JDD/Walsh to get NBA minutes & build an NBA game (next season). Even a guy like Nesmith (much greater credentials) who received years of grooming at the NBA level was dealt when it meant an upgrade to the Celtic bench. I'm sure Brad & Co saw a brighter future for Aaron but they couldn't have him learn on the job here.

NBA garbage-time minutes need to go to legitimate NBA players like Luke, PP, Hauser then the very last few minutes go to Queta, Stevens, Svi, Banton, and Brissett.

JDD and Walsh need to dominate at the G-League level to get Brad's attention or draw some interest from a re-builder. It may even be too late to deal them as potential sweeteners in trades since they can't be used for that after July 1st (no combining salaries).

The path for a player like Walsh is to go the Sam Hauser route. Not easy, as it's not clear if there will be an opening for him unless Hauser leaves via FA. Still a lot of uncertainty how this new CBA and 2nd apron all work out when it comes to teams like the Celtics, where the low salaries are much less likely to be used to make the books balance. Walsh is also young and still can make regular appearances in Portland for the next 2 seasons without too much hindrance.

Assuming extensions for White and Jrue, the team's starting lineup is basically set for the next 3-4 seasons anyway. So there may not need to be a rush to trade a Walsh if he's OK with a bench role in year 4.

Agreed. Also, I get that Lamar Stevens is the better player right now, but how many more games would the C's lose if Walsh had Stevens' spot on the bench? And I'm looking ahead to next season, not thinking about this one.

Don't think he'd be taking Hauser's spot as much as he'd be taking Steven's, or Brissett's.

My guess is they're having Walsh train on two ways to take one of the spots currently held by Stevens, Brissett, and Drew Peterson for the spots held by Banton and Svi.

Walsh is not a 2-way player; he signed a partially guaranteed 4-year contract after he was drafted (4th year is a club option). He was instead assigned to Maine and has basically played there all season. He can be freely assigned to Maine for the next 2 seasons as well, provided he is willing to accept the assignment (which seems assured).

JDD, Peterson, and Queta are the team's 2-way players.

Thanks, I keep forgetting Walsh's not a two way with how much time he spent down there.

This. Depending on how the Cs do this year, I suspect there will be playing time for JW next year.

Man, his strides are long but quick. He's definitely worked on his shot too.

Nobody in the organization is looking ahead to next season. Every roster spot this year and move at the deadline has one singular focus in mind….a 23-24 Championship. Stevens, Brissett, Banton…it isn’t that they aren’t easily replaceable as 9-10-11 men it is that they provide insurance for when they are forced to be 6-7-8 men.

I don't think he is strong enough yet. If his calling card is defense, I think he is going to be pushed about. Nothing wrong with him sitting in maine a second year.

I think Walsh benefited from playing regularly in Maine vs getting Lamar Stevens minutes with the big league club. The same may very well be true next season as well; he is both young and raw. Not too concerned about next season's deep bench anyway.

JDD with 38 points tonight including 16 of Maine’s last 20 scored but not quite enough in a 120-112 loss to Motor City.

Nice bounce back win last night. Peterson looks intriguing, got a 3 level game and can really pass it. Good enough athlete to be good in transition too. Question is, does he have the functional strength to guard in the NBA?

Box Score/Highlights:
https://gleague.nba.com/game/mcc-vs-mne-2022300267?view=box-score
I had the pleasure of watching him not long ago and you've described my feelings to a T. He sees the court extremely well, and has a nice stroke. He needs about 20 pounds of muscle, however, and is frame is pretty slight. Intriguing, though, and I'm glad that we've got him for a while.
