"Yankees who are working out at the team’s minor league training and scouting complex in Tampa this week:

Judge, Torres, Volpe, LeMahieu, Wells, Rodon, Cortes, Loaisiga, Cabrera, Dominguez."

Dominguez!

Yeah it's a minor league deal, they will likely try to get Jeter Downs off the 40 man at some point and Smith is backup depth if someone claims Downs.
NY claims Diego Castillo (who came up in the NY system and was one of the two guys they traded to PIT for Clay Holmes) and DFAs Downs as expected. They still need to free up a 40 man spot for Luke Weaver.

I thought the original offer was 5 years $150 and allegedly Snell either wanted a sixth year or more money.

So, in theory this is a new offer?

So now NY will wait over the next week and see if teams claim Oscar Gonzalez, Jeter Downs and/or Bubba Thompson. Any of those three who aren’t claimed, NY can hold onto them without clogging the 40 man.

NY is into the 110 percent tax bracket now after the Stroman signing, so $30M to Snell would cost Hal and friends $63M this season, possibly a little less in future seasons if payroll goes back down some, but a lot.

Andy Martino wrote today that Hector Neris is looking for somewhere between 2/14 and 2/22, I'd think NY would jump at the lower part of that range. Again it's the rare case where Cashman might prefer a two year deal to a one year deal to lock in a back end guy for 2025, but maybe they're not sure if Neris is that guy.

Lol at this franchise. They are taking the away uniforms and making the first update in 50 years to make it even more bland and boring.

Oscar Gonzalez got put through waivers last Wednesday so we should learn the result there soon.

Downs I don’t think is a major leaguer, but Gonzalez could be legit depth, glad they were able to keep him.

They can clear a spot on the first day of spring training by putting Dominguez on the 60 day IL (if they're sure he won't be back by early June) and they also still need to move a catcher, especially if Rortvedt is out of options, but space on their 40 man is getting tight for the first time this winter.

NY signs Luis Torrens to a minor league deal, MLBTR does a good job explaining why (presumably):

“With prospect Austin Wells and veteran Jose Trevino already on the 40-man and likelier to make the roster, Rortvedt could be squeezed out, and Torrens adds some depth in the event that he’s claimed by another club. If not, he can join Rortvedt and Carlos Narvaez as catching options in Triple-A Scranton, where he could also see occasional action at first base — a position where Torrens has tallied 482 innings between the majors and minors.”

Also NY has Ben Rice lurking in AA, a C/1B who will turn 25 next month, but because of Covid etc, he has not had many ABs and he exploded last year, 16 HRs in 196 ABs in AA and a 1.049 OPS.

NY claims Matt Gage, a 31 year old lefty reliever who the Astros released to make space for Josh Hader, and who somehow still has an option left. Not sure what the accompanying 40 man move is? Rortvedt? Castillo? Matt Krook?

Diego Castillo gets DFAd for Gage, so now NY will wait and see if anyone claims him or if they can hold onto him like they did Gonzalez and Downs.

Incidental question for the Yankees fans: has Austin Wells been hanging around the minors for a long time or am I confusing him with someone else? I feel like I’ve been hearing about him forever.

Not too long, I don't think. Wells was drafted in 2020 (and 2018, as a matter of fact - both times by NY), then started playing in the minors in '21.

My guess is you are confusing him with Austin Romine.

I know it is completely irrational for lots of reasons, including cost, the fact that they signed Stroman, and the entirely plausible idea that Monty and Snell aren't interested in playing for NY absent a huge windfall, but as things drag on I'm kind of getting my hopes up that Cashman will swoop in and sign one of those two to a reasonable contract.

Yeah, it probably pushes Schmidt out of the rotation, but the fragility of the staff is an issue. I'm guardedly hopeful about Nestor and Rodon being healthy but I don't really know what to expect.

Yeah it's hard to see that making sense for many reasons as you say, but maybe if they could trade Schmidt for something they really want? No idea what that might be though.

That's awesome. I'll always be a fan of Joe Girardi. Behind the plate, in the booth, and even as a manager I've always appreciated his work, flaws and all.

NY should find out in the next day or so if Diego Castillo gets claimed or if NY gets him back.

These fringe 40 man moves are usually meaningless but in this case, NY is very thin behind Volpe/Peraza at SS, their next real prospects are teenagers slated for low A (Arias and Lombard Jr.), so getting Castillo to Scranton would be welcome.

Yep, now we wait to see what they gave up, hopefully not much.

Only one year of control on Ferguson, NY can't have given up much here.
