Huh? I've seen him make a ton of poor plays in his own end.Not really cause he rarely has to defend. Wiped out a Pastrnak breakaway tonight.
His possession stats indicate that he spends less time in his own zone than the average defender because of how proficient he is at retaining the puck and pushing the play - hence that he doesn't really 'need' to defend that much (and doesn't play much on the PK).Huh?
Ok fair enough, but it still doesn't take away from the fact that he sucks when he is in his own end. However, there is no denying his offensive value, that's for sure. His possession stats indicate that he spends less time in his own zone than the average defender because of how proficient he is at retaining the puck and pushing the play - hence that he doesn't really 'need' to defend that much (and doesn't play much on the PK).
Still tremendously valuable as a defender
I will say, it's somewhat unique to have a bonafide #1 defenseman who you wouldn't really want on the ice in the last minute of a game where you're defending a lead.Ok fair enough, but it still doesn't take away from the fact that he sucks when he is in his own end. It's called the NHLHorrible call here
edit: They blew it dead on the ice and rescinded the penalty... After a replay played in the arena.
OK GUYS
They waved it off!? When do they ever wave off a penalty that's not the throwing the puck out of play call?Horrible call here LOL

He's probably average defensively. A lot of advanced stats suggest that the offensive value of an elite offensive defenseman like Burns/Karlsson/Byfuglien is more valuable than the defensive value of any defenseman could possibly be.Ok fair enough, but it still doesn't take away from the fact that he sucks when he is in his own end. I've had Tampa fans tell me they thought the game was one of the best they've seen, while also adding in that because it was such a close game it stings way more, akin to 2003 ALCS Game 7 - great game, painful result. We probably do. But it sure is fun to bring up. Wonder if Tampa fans can see it that way yet. Glad I don't have to think about what I would think.
