The bright side: The beer lines were probably short. Inside the Parker got some reading in. The bullpen wasn't horrible. The pain came in under three hours. The SS survived. (not so sure that's a good thing) Looks like the Celtic's losing streak is over.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
Of Firefly? Out Of Gas, Shindig, and of course Objects in Space.
Twilight Zone, that's a much harder list to make.
Seems fair to me. I'd put Serenity (the pilot) on the list, and might put The Message on par with Shindig. While it's not up with the others, Our Mrs. Reyonlds will always have a place in my heart, if only for the "Yes. Great. I wish you hundreds of fat children" moment.

Still curious as to your Twilight Zone choices. . .

That is incredibly hard. There are so many greats as Serling is the best writer in television history, but right now I'd say Eye of the Beholder, A Passage for Trumpet, and A Game of Pool. Which is two Jack Klugmans and no Burgess Meredith's, strangely enough.
Special consideration for An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, which probably does count.

I missed memories of the Boomer? Damnit.

When I was at BU I would go running in the morning, and my route would take me around Fenway and then into the medical district. That same winter/spring (1980) the Boomer was attempting a comeback, and he would be out running as well as he sought to get himself into playing shape. Often, our routes would mean that we would run next to each other for a while. The Boomer was always my favorite Red Sox when I was little, and when I would run past Fenway, what a thrill I had when we would run next to each other for a few blocks. We never said a word, (I was too much in awe - and out of breath) we just nodded to each other as we ran. It made me giddy. It was the highlight of my freshmen year. Boomer was probably my favorite Red Sox of all time.

So, I'm sorry I missed the game thread. Not sorry I missed the game, to which I can only ask: Good Christ, are the Red Sox really this bad?

I am in my 60's, I have seen a lot of bad baseball from dozens of Sox teams, but I am extremely frustrated that management has allowed this team to become an absolute laughingstock. I have never been as discouraged by their present and future as I am right now.

Before I cowardly left the game thread, I noted Boomer was my first favorite player. That started because we share a birthday, and when you’re six years old, that’s all the criteria you need. (Eventually it got way less important — Kyrie Irving also shares our birthday)

But my Boomer fandom continued because he was just so much fun to watch — always swung harder than anyone, and despite his eventual girth was just so graceful and light on his feet. I always felt Fenway robbed him of tons of homers, because his typical at bat was a long drive toFenway’s cavernous dead center.

Happier days…

In an under the radar stat, Bobby Dalbec is quietly hitting the same as heralded Oriole number one pick future legend Jackson Holliday.

The So Blue Marble, by Dorothy B. Hughes. Everything I have read of hers is amazingly frightening. I guess the best is The Expendable Man, but In a Lonely Place is really good, too. Actually, I have to stop reading in a few minutes, as this stuff will scare me out of sleep.
She is fantastic! Ride The Pink Horse is also great.

Thanks to both of you for working this topic into the game thread. I’m a film noir fan and have seen In A Lonely Place and Ride The Pink Horse, but although I’ve read quite a few of the novels on which the noir movies were based, Dorothy B Hughes was new to me. Now I have several additions to my reading list and will start with In A Lonely Place.

Well thanks to the Sox producing unwatchable baseball, I've been introduced to Dorothy B Hughes, so I'm also now reading The So Blue Marble and rating last night's game a success. Cheers all!

Right with you. I’ve been a Sox fan since 1966 and have lived through the good and the bad. This current team and its prospects are extremely discouraging. It just seems like ownership is not inclined to do what it takes to improve this team. Maybe, like Nixon, they have a secret plan, but it doesn’t seem that way. I just fear that for the next few years, they’ll be looking up from the bottom of the division. I hope I’m wrong.

I'm going home
Let's say, for shats and giggles, that they do fire Cora and make Tek (for instance) the interim. How does that improve the product on the field?
It doesn't. But it's time to complete some player evaluations and act accordingly.

Hamilton simply can't be penciled in at short again, period. My guess is that had Romy been healthy, we would have already have seen the last of it, and last night really forces the issue. The kid is not ready for prime time and will never be a shortstop. I don't even think Cora is making the final decision unilaterally when it comes to where to play Rafaela, but he better be at short today, assuming Romy is still out. David Hamilton is not the answer. I'd rather see Cora out there himself.

There is no excuse at all for the quality of defense we've seen this week. It's beyond pathetic and has deserved every ounce of criticism it's gotten. Absolutely fucking unacceptable. I knocked off 5 wins off my expectations when Story went down, but the residual effects have been so beyond ridiculous that I have to think the current level of suck is unsustainable. We all better fucking hope so. Just be meh and not fucking historically fucking terrible for Christ's sake....

At this point I just pray Raffy gets healthy, that they move move Rafaela to short today, get Grissom into the mix in a couple of weeks, and hope that what we have been seeing otherwise gets turned around quick. As bad as it's been, they are much more capable than they've shown in the last few games, particularly the outfielders. I'm not really worried there. And the infield we have now is 3/4 back-ups, two of whom have now proven to be virtually useless. It sucks, but it's fixable.

And building on that, Dalbec is cooked. He is simply not ever going to be a viable major league player. It's the one non-upgrade that really fucking bothered me this off-season, and of course that weakness in roster construction got exposed right quick with Raffy's troubles. It's time to fix that shit. Get Story off the 40 and Meidroth up here stat if nothing else.

This current team and its prospects are extremely discouraging.
They're 7-7 after a 7-3 start on the west coast. Not great, but they just lost Story for the year, Raffy for several games, Baltimore is a Wagon, and last night was as putrid a defensive display as you'll ever see, but they couldn't score anyway. So yeah, some very discouraging games, but overall I have seen more to be encouraged about than not. Cleaning up short alone will be huge, these pitchers need to be rewarded for inducing weak contact.

I didn't let myself get too high from the hot start, and as frustrating as this week has been, I'm not going to freak out and throw in the towel after a shitty 4-game stretch, especially considering the totality of the circumstances. But moves need to be made.

Tighten it up, Craig. And fast.
