Anyone who switched to project fi have any reason I shouldn't buy the 6p and join? I already have an invite and just need to place the phone order. It seems too easy and obvious so I fear in missing a catch...

According to that, it's almost exactly the same size as the 6 plus. Guess I'll have to hit a Verizon store to check one of those out for size.

You'll probably just be checking out the 6 plus, I think the Nexus are just online this year.

I'm so unhappy with my existing phone that I may well just sign up for Pi and pay termination.

A quick question - if I am at home on a wifi network that is password protected and my phone is connected to it, will I use wifi to make calls or will it only make calls over free, open networks???

I'm interested in this answer as well.  I try to use Hangouts to make calls on my G3 and it sucks so bad that it's totally unusable on WiFi or 4G.  I'm terrified of the basically horrible Hangouts app being my only option or I would have pulled the trigger already.

The reason not to join Fi would be if you have no Sprint AND no T Mobile coverage and you need to make calls out of wifi range.

On my home, password protected network, my phone makes/receives wifi calls. If I turn off the network, the phone switches over to LTE.

The Nexus phones do not use Hangouts to make wifi calls. It uses the phone's normal dialer. You can use hangouts to make calls from other devices. It does send your voicemails to hangouts, which you can access from your phone or other devices.

Can someone recommend a decent music player app with no ads? Free or a for a couple bucks. I'm on a galaxy and just tired of the small buttons on the lock screen.

It may be against the grain, but I bought the LG G4. Here in Panama options are not that expanded, and it's basically Samsung vs. LG for the Android market. The camera is amazing, the scren is incredible, and I like that I can expand memory with and SD card.

Why is that against the grain?  That's the phone I was looking at upgrading to this winter and I've only heard good things.  Am I missing something?

Just beacuse it is seldom (if at all) mentioned here, and from all reports, LG seems to not be lighting the world on fire.

The Nexus 5X will ship with a USB-C to USB-C cable and I presume a wall charger.  If you want to connect it to a laptop or existing charger you will need to purchase a USB-C to standard USB (USB-A) cable which are currently not widely available.

I dunno what "not widely available" means, but you can get them at Monoprice, Amazon, Best Buy, Newegg, etc.

http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters%C2%AE-Type-USB-C-Black/dp/B00S8GU2OC

Or you can get a micro USB to USB-C adapter for like $3 and use your existing cables/chargers, though I'm not sure you'll get fast charging this way:

They are just starting to roll to stores and inventories are tight.  Given how new the USB-C standard is, I would be hesitant to give a no name a shot.  Monoprice is solid so there shouldn't be an issue there.

The data transfer rate on that piece depends on the spec of the cable and the adapter.  If both are USB 3.0 or greater then the transfer rate is up to 5Gbps.  If either is 2.0 then the rate would be 480 Mbps.

Just got a Oneplus 2 invite. I'm sticking with my Nexus 5X purchase. If anyone wants the invite, PM me within the next 24 hours (it expires after that).

I got an update last night, but it wasn't the 6.0 update.
Nexus 5. Still holding off on install. The Android sites are pretty content-free as usual but no one seems to be reporting showstoppers. Plan is to hold off till the first point release.

There is a ton of garbage in Touchwizz that you could probably turn off that would help the battery life.

About a year into having the Droid Turbo and I don't think I could ever own a phone that didn't at least match this battery and have some form of Turbo charging. It's a completely different phone experience when you don't have to worry about your phone not going a full day with heavy use.

This is why I went with the GS6 Active. The battery life coupled with quick charge is game changing.

Just wanted to pop in an recommend anyone who feasibly can should sign up for Google Fi. It's soooo worth it. My last bill was $27, and about $6 of that was watching Youtube and forgetting to connect to the WiFi at work.

I was actually going to ask people here about their experiences with Fi because I know a few of you had signed up.  Verizon increasing the price of unlimited is finally going to accomplish their goal of getting me off of it (though at the expense of me using them at all, so probably not exactly the plan), and I do need a new phone.  New England seems pretty well covered with T-Mo and Sprint, so that shouldn't be too much of an issue, but I wanted to hear some recent first-hand experiences with it, because the original reviews were less than flattering.

Also if I sign up now any idea on how long it would take to get in?

If Fi isn't a good fit I'll probably just go to Cricket or something for a while.

How does SMS work on Fi? I currently use a Google Voice number (via Hangouts) for my texts, and the reliability has been terrible. Texts that I send just never get received by the other person, or they send me stuff that I don't get, with no indication that there is ever a problem. It's really getting annoying and I am planning on porting my number to an actual provider soon. Not sure if Fi is worth considering. If it requires the use of Hangouts then I will probably pass on it.

You can either SMS in Hangouts, or use the default Android SMS app. I ported a GV number, no issues (and I was using that GV number for SMS via Hangouts and didn't ever have the issues you mention)

I manually updated to Marshmallow on my N6, visually it isn't very different.  Now on Tap is cool when I remember it is there.  I may be crazy, but I feel like my Fi signal is a little worse; going 3g in places that used to be LTE.  But no real issues thus far.

I don't think anyone has a 5x in their hands yet.  I believe they're just starting to ship now, and the Project Fi push is synced with the release of the new 5x and 6p.  Everyone on fi now is running a Nexus 6.

Google Play is out of stock of the Nexus 6P. :(

Joined the waitlist. I don't understand why this always happens with these phones.

A lot more people want them at launch time than the ongoing demand is going to be.  It wouldn't make economic sense to build the factories to meet launch demand just to have them become mostly idle after a month or two, and it's better for the company and for consumers to sell phones as they're made than to try to stockpile a whole bunch of inventory before launching (which would just mean that everyone would have to wait to get them instead of just some people, and would have capital tied up in inventory for no reason).

I installed Android M a few days ago. So far, so good. No obvious problems. Slightly better and smoother animation. Slightly better battery life, I think, but it's not blowing me away.

Anyone have any suggestions for a phone that is less than 5 inches on Verizon? Preferably it would come installed with Android M. My wife is in the market for a new phone and I don't pay much attention to the smaller devices.

The only device under 5 inches worth talking about these days is the Sony Z5 Compact. But good luck finding one in the US or getting Verizon to support it.

It looks like the only device that meets the size requirement and isn't a total POS is the Droid Mini.  Anyone have one?

Can someone check my math on this.

Current Plan:  Two lines, unlimited data, plenty of minutes and texts, corporate discount.
Total before taxes and fees = $135
I usually purchase 2 new $200 phones every two years so I would add $16.70 in order to compare to the new plans
Total = $152

New Plan:  Two lines, 12GB Data (yes I need that much), Unlimited talk and text, corporate discount.
Data = $63.20 (this is where the discount is applied)
Line Access = $40
2 New Phones = ~$40 per month
Total = $143.20

The new plans save me a measly $9????

Not to mention the fact that they are going to gouge me an extra $20 per month until August when my second line comes off contract.

Droid Mini was great when it was released 2 years ago.  I can't imagine it will be officially getting anything past 4.4.4 and I don't see a forum for it on XDA.

You're paying more for the phones in your new scenario, but yes it won't save you much if you were grandfathered into an old unlimited data plan, it was a loophole that Verizon closed several years ago, usually you can't upgrade a Verizon unlimited data plan and get the phone subsidized, you need to bring a phone you bought outright.

Unless you stumble into a couple of glitches in their system and get lucky.  :)

I'm on day 2 with the Nexus 5x. It took me forever to move everything over from my Nexus 4 and I was having serious doubts about my choice, but all is calm now.

I've had no significant issues so far and the only lag I see is when I'm deleting emails.

The lag on my GS6 Active was terrible. I tried a bunch of different things to get rid of it. Then I swapped the google keyboard for Samsung's keyboard and all is well in the world. I do not know why on a phone as expensive as the GS6 and with its guts - it performs like my old HTC Hero in any situation.

The odds of me selling my GS6 next year to purchase an iPhone 7 are at like 99%.

Two weeks into the GS6 Active and I love it coming from a Moto X 2014. The screen is goregous. The camera is astounding. It very quickly focuses and processes images. Touchwiz doesn't suck as much as it used to - all things being equal I would prefer moto's interface but that's a small thing. The battery on the active kicks ass. After a morning of normal use, I'm at 85%. I don't know why phones don't come with bigger batteries. The trade off in form factor is small. I wish it had a fingerprint sensor and was 64gb. Though I upload to google photos and delete images anyhow. On my 16gb X I never used more than 13gb. Great phone. Easily the best that I've ever had.

Honeymoon is over, huh?  I've had my 6 Active since July 1 and I have no issues whatsoever.  I use Swiftkey for the keyboard, but it's been a champ and it is the best phone I've ever had.

DItching Google Keyboard has restored this to being a great phone. But for fucksake, Samsung and Google, activating a stock keyboard in 2015 should not turn a porsche into a ford focus.

I've had mine for a little over a week now. My only complaint is the lack of OIS. I love the new camera sensor, but there are moments where the lack of OIS is really frustrating. Everything else is great. The battery life is much better than it was on my 2 year old Nexus 5, but I'm not sure if that's anything other than the phone being new.
