It was the year of the juiced ball. Everyone hit a ton of homers in 1987.

If both Devers and Reyes are banged up, you have to put Reyes on the IL and get someone else up. Even if he'll be better in a couple of days, the team can't get by with a two man bench.

In 1987, 4 total players hit 40+ home runs.
In 1996, 17 total players hit 40+ home runs, included Todd Hundley of all people.
