Tigres Del Licey was founded in 1907 & is one of 2 teams that play their home games in Santo Domingo. They share a stadium, Estadio Quisqueya, with the other Santo Domingo team.
I thought this was a pretty cool story:
Over the next 16 years, Licey became so dominant that an agreement was made among the three other competing teams (
Los Muchachos,
San Carlos and
Delco Lite) to form a new team, composed of their best players, in order to beat Licey. This team, called "
Leones del Escogido" ( Lions of the Chosen one ), still exists, and the teams share the same stadium in Santo Domingo.
Anyway, last year Licey had the best record in the league at 34-16, despite having the 2nd youngest team in the league, with an average age of 26.8.
The team included Major Leaguers such as Elly De La Cruz, Oneil Cruz & Albert Abreu, & former MLB players such as the 37 y/o Emilio Bonifácio, who has been playing for Licey since 2006, & Hansel Robles who has been pitching quite well in the Mexican Independent League.
Three current members of the Red Sox were on this team:
* Pablo Reyes, who had a .746 OPS in 34 PAs.
* Narciso Crook, who had a .476 OPS in 9 PAs.
&...
* TRISTON CASAS, who had a .689 OPS in 15 PAs. He was 2-9 with 2 singles, 5 walks, a HBP & 3 strikeouts.
Casas left after only 3 games played due to knee soreness, though. Carlos Febles was actually Licey's bench coach.
