It's a really crappy day here in central Connecticut. Heavy mist with occasional showers. Temperature currently in the mid 50's. Really raw. I have to imagine that the weather is similar in Boston. Not a very good day to play baseball. The two teams scheduled to play at Fenway this afternoon are just playing out the string; both teams are eliminated from post season play, the White Sox are saved from last place by virtue of being in the same division as the Royals, and the Red Sox will need a hot streak to finish above .500 and an even hotter streak to finish out of the basement. There's really no good reason to play baseball at Fenway this afternoon. But you know what, I want to see Red Sox baseball this afternoon. Today's is the last Sunday afternoon game at Fenway. We'll have to wait about six months for the next Red Sox game that counts. I'll check on the Pats between innings, but I really want to see the Red Sox play this afternoon. Geaux Sox!

Game 157
White Sox beat the Red Sox on kind of a lark -
a Pesky homerun gifted by Fenway Park.
T’was short like the poems I’ll write as we embark
on the final week with no real story arc.
We’ll root as we strive for the .500 mark,
hoping our heroes will show some kind of spark
in seven games before the season goes dark.

I'll take "what is the most generous use of "heroes" that I've seen in forever for $200, please, Alex."

Seriously, though, thanks @LynnRice75. You are consistently +WAR. Can you play 2B?

Interesting that Abreu is in LF with Duvall in RF. I still think he could be a medium term solution in RF at Fenway as a guy than can play some CF and has a cannon for an arm.

I think range is the big question for Abreu, and if Dugo is sticking around next year left field is the obvious place for him. He'll make a lot of outs at 2B and home with his arm and the wall.

If Crawford can actually be a 5 inning guy it fixes a big hole for next year

All that being said, I don't see why we don't see Abreu in RF from now till closing time. We'll have more info on his handling RF, and basically, if you can handle Fenway's RF, you can handle LF.

Yeah this makes a lot of sense to me as well. Yoshida just seems like a REALLY bad fit here unless he's going to be the medium term DH.

Kid is gonna mash in Fenway for a long time if we don't trade him

Abreu really reminds me of Trot Nixon. He can take a walk, he can throw, he seems good enough on defense to play RF.

He could replace Paxton, who averaged 5 IP this year.

If my math is correct, this year, None of Bello, Sale, Houck or Paxton averaged 6 innings or better. Would be nice if we can find a few to go at least 6.

Sad isn't it, if 6IP is the benchmark....

That's just how baseball is now; no one other than the complete elite starters averages 6 innings.

Crawford has been one of the only reliable guys this year. He and Pivetta the closest things we've had to workhorses

The problem isn't so much the average, as very few pitchers these days average 6+ per game, the problem is that they made it 6 innings very, very few times. If they could even get to the 6 IP mark once or twice through the order each time it would be a lifeline for the bullpen. It doesn't have to be the same guy every time, but they just can't go 2 or 3 times through the rotation with 5 or less innings like they did so often this year.

I'm sort of worried that a Raffy Minor/Raffy Major 1-2 spot are going to produce a lot of low pitch count outs.
Yeah, I am really interested in seeing what they do with this lineup this offseason. I think Devers is much better in the 3/4 hole than at #2. I prefer Casas at 2, to be honest, but I also get that they want him in the cleanup spot. The lack of RHH simply has to be addressed somehow. I know he isn't prototypical, but I much prefer Verdugo in the leadoff spot as when he is on he is great, and even when he is struggling he tends to put up decent, professional at bats most of the time.

Verdugo (or Abreu?)
Casas
RHB (No idea who, don't think it's someone on the current roster)
Devers
RHB (Story? Rafaela?)
Yoshida
Other RHB not at 5
Second Baseman
Catcher (Teel? Nah)

The front office has A LOT of work to do this offseason. I think next offseason will be the "fun" one, though, since any long term deal given out this year would block the guys they have worked so hard to develop the last three years.

Did O'Brien say that Cora, or the Cora brothers, are the reason the Sox acquired Reyes?

Duvall would be a good fit for a RH bat to keep if he can play first base again, and do it well.

Or he has one of his down years. The guy has been insane all year but he is what he is: perfectly mediocre bat.
