DSL Sox end their season with a 5-1 loss.

Boxscore

Jhonathan Diaz went 4 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits (1 HR) and a walk; striking out 4. Shair Lucrus went 1 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, a HBP and a walk; striking out one. Carlos Caceres went 2 2/3 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits (1 HR) and a walk; striking out one. Francisco Tena went 2/3rds of an inning, giving up a hit and a walk; striking out one. Juan Perez picked up the final out of the 9th, giving up a hit.

Isaias Lucena went 1/3 with a walk. Yoan Aybar and Gerardo Carrizalez each went 1/4 with a triple. Luis Benoit went 1/4. Juan Hernandez went 0/2 with 2 walks. Luis Alejandro Basabe went 0/3 with a walk. Carlos Tovar, Raiwinson Lameda and Roldani Baldwin each went 0/4.

The Sox were held to just 4 H and 4 BB with 12 K, as Rangers starter Pedro Payano tossed 6 scoreless (3 H, 2 BB, 8 K).  Reliever Kevin Sosa struck out the side in the 9th, all of them swinging (Aybar, Carrizalez & Benoit).

Still, plenty of positives from this Sox team, one of the three youngest in the 36-team DSL with a weighted average age of 17.9 for pitchers and 17.7 for hitters (fwiw, league weighted-average ages are 18.9 and 18.2 respectively). The team had their two best offensive players promoted stateside mid-season (Devers and LAx Basabe) yet still reached the championship round. Offensively they were one of just 8 clubs to average at least 6 runs per game, ranked 10th in team OPS (.708; league = .671) and had had the 12th-best walk rate (10.9% of PA; league = 10.3). On the base paths they attempted 1.99 steals per game, which ranked just 21st (league = 2.16) but were 7th in success rate at 69.8% (league = 65.7%).

On the mound, the Sox had the 4th best ERA (2.79; league = 3.71), 5th-best WHIP (1.204; league = 1.380), and 6th-lowest walk rate (3.3 BB/9IP; league = 4.1). Again, that's out of 36 teams. Significant room for improvement lies in their collective strikeout rate, which ranked next-to-last (6.6 K/9; league = 7.6).

Sox batteries also allowed stolen bases at well-above-average rates, with runners successful 77.5% of the time (no league rank available). But surprisingly, opposing teams only attempted 1.84 steals per game. Samuel Miranda (72.5 SB%; 1.82 SBA/G) and Isaias Lucena (73.2 SB%; 1.81 SBA/G) were the most successful catchers at limiting the running game, while it was pretty much Kentucky Derby Day anytime Roldani Baldwin (26 SB in 29 SBA; 89.7%) and Pablo Urena (4 SB in 4 tries) were behind the dish.

Lots of reasons to be optimistic about the Dominican scouting and development operation, especially with the latest batch of signings.

MA ... That was an awesome recap. I feel like my passport should get a stamp. When do you launch the DSL Network?

Heh. As soon as the courts make it legal for me to co-opt MiLB's trademarks, accounts, and descriptions of games. And thanks to you and Ro for the kind words.

But the real recap will come a few weeks from now when Cuzittt once again works his magic and breaks things down player-by-player. Here's last year's writeup.

Three stellar outings by Sox starters... and three blown leads.

One's already a loss as Noe Ramirez surrenders a walk-off 3-run jack in the b-9th. He's struggled something fierce over the past couple of weeks.

Edwin Escobar yielded a tying solo HR with 2 outs in the t-9th. PawSox & Syracuse tied 1-1 in the bottom half.

Jake Dahlstrand was unreal for 7 innings, but Madison Younginer gave up a tying solo HR in the b-8th. Salem still tied 1-1 with Myrtle Beach.

Bullpen and defense blows up, Portland loses 8-5.

Boxscore

Carson Blair went 3/4. David Chester and Sean Coyle each went 1/4 with a HR. Keury de la Cruz went 1/4. Jonathan Roof went 1/2 after replacing Rusney Castillo who went 1/3 with a SB. Stefan Welch went 0/1 with 2 walks and a HBP. Ryan Dent went 0/3 with a walk. Mike Miller went 0/4 with a sacrifice. Shannon Wilkerson went 0/4.

The 3 unearned runs charged to Noe Ramirez on the walk-off HR came courtesy of a Mike Miller E-5, but in 11.2 IP over his last 10 games (dating back to Aug 5) opponents are hitting .318/.373/.523/.896 against Noe in 52 PA.

Pawsox walk off win!

Brentz doubles off old pal Manny Delcarmen, takes 3rd on a wild pitch, and scores on a Cecchini single.

Meanwhile in South Carolina, Salem's Jake Romanski apparently hit a 2-run HR in the t-10th but there's a huge argument underway involving Myrtle Beach's manager challenging that it was foul. He's been ejected and it looks like he picked up third base and chucked it into the stands in protest. Stay tuned...

Garin Cecchini gets a walk-off bases-loaded single in the 10th, Pawsox win 2-1.

Edwin Escobar went 8 2/3 scoreless innings (giving up 6 hits and striking out 7)... before giving up a Solo HR to lose a CG Shutout. He was replaced by Heath Hembree who went the final 1 1/3 innings, striking out one.

Blake Swihart went 3/4. Bryce Brentz went 3/5 with a double (to start the 10th... he would score the winning run). Travis Shaw went 2/3 with a HR and 2 walks. Alex Hassan went 1/2 with a HBP before being replaced by Corey Brown who went 0/1. Garin Cecchini and Ivan de Jesus each went 1/5. Deven Marrero went 0/2 with a walk and a sacrifice. The live box is slow to update, but Romanski's HR will stand. Salem takes a 3-1 lead into the b-10th.

In addition to Pelicans manager Joe Mikulik getting tossed, hitting coach Josue Perez and third baseman Nick Vickerson also got the heave ho. And, technically, so did third base itself

EDIT - Kyle Martin nails it down with a 1-2-3 b-10th. Salem takes Game 1.

Salem wins in 10 thanks to a Jake Romanski HR, 3-1.

Boxscore

Carlos Asuaje went 1/4 with an intentional walk. Manuel Margot, Mario Martinez, Jake Romanski and Cole Sturgeon each went 1/4; Romanski with a HR, Sturgeon and Margot each with a double. Jose Vinicio went 1/5. Matty Johnson went 0/2 with 2 walks and a sacrifice. Jantzen Witte went 0/4 with a walk. Reed Gragnani went 0/4.

He is the same manager that has been on SC with his crazy ejections this year. Right?

Can't ask for a better performance from the return on Jake Peavy.

Has Dahlstrand pitched himself into the top 30?

In the PawSox game, Alex Hassan was HBP and apparently in lots of pain, but remained in the game before being pinch-run for moments later by Corey Brown.

Update:

Matt Huegel ‏@MattHuegelSP 1m
Manager Kevin Boles said that Hassan got hit just above the elbow and doesn't expect it to be a long term thing.

Boy, Escobar has been great (I think one start notwithstanding).

We got some good new pieces at the deadline.

Is there a reason that Blake is in the 8 hole? That's a lot of 1-7 offensive dead weight suck to shoulder.
And I'm not just looking at the box score of this game... If he's the 8th best hitter on this team we all need to buy duck boats for 2015.

He has put up a .659 OPS in AAA so far, I think he might be properly slotted into the batting order, unless you want to boost him for potential.

Reassuring? I see where you're coming from there - but I have my doubts.  Taking 4 months off from baseball isn't what he needs.  He needs to spend some time with the Sox coaches working out the issue.  Whether it's shortening his swing, changing his stance, whatever.  Screwing around with that starting in February isn't the best idea.

Plus there's the chance he won't be with the club in 2015.

They are probably what is exacerbating the problem more than helping.

Right now he lost his timing on fastballs.  It isn't a mechanical issue as much as timing issue.  He has played around with his swing too much and now it is slow as he second guesses his swing.  He needs to go back to what he was doing before this year.
