Or the possibility exists you only really like 1 of the 2 QB projected to be available to you at 3. At which point Brissett makes for a great hedge bet if/when you decide to stack talent/picks instead of going all in on a guy you ain't over the moon about.I don’t agree with some that this seals the deal on Maye or Daniels. Does that seem likely? Sure. But they could also trade back still with peace of mind knowing Brissett can work alongside a McCarthy, Penix, Nix, etc.
Geesh. Next you're going to claim that the Red Sox couldn't just unilaterally sign Mookie.Except, you know, the guys out there playing to win who won’t be on the team next year playing for contracts, as well as the coaching staff that’s now gone.
Players on NFL teams are actual human beings who for the most part play to win and have no incentive not to.
Yeah, a really good guy. Here's a cool article from ESPN in 2014. Excerpts:But anyways Jacoby seemed like a good guy. I hope this works out.
And:He does not remember how the idea came to him, or why it came to him. He just remembers grabbing a pen and some paper and writing a letter, then another, then another, until he had written letters to all his teammates on offense.
We're talking about a player who bakes cookies for his offensive linemen. Indeed, Brissett is not too proud to show his sensitive side, though it is easier to do that with words on a page.
“It’s a matter of saying I appreciate what you’ve done so far,” Brissett said. “Or if someone is going through a rough time, it’s a chance to say I’m here for you if you need me. Sometimes, you’ve got to joke with some of them. With the offensive linemen, nah you have to joke with them because they’re never serious, anyway.”
That's why I figured it'd be 2 with a fake 3rd for bonus dumping. After all, right now, he's the presumptive starter, even if they land Maye or Daniels. Either way, he's exactly who was needed - competent, classy, willing to work alongside young QBs.Backups usually get either 1 or 2 year deals, and you get more money doing the 1 year deals. Patriots are probably one of his best chances to get some starts too.
LOL, what?Nice, boring, no-nonsense move - love it. If Bill had done this a year ago, he'd probably still be here.
You mean like try to trade Mac Jones and sign Baker Mayfield?Nice, boring, no-nonsense move - love it. If Bill had done this a year ago, he'd probably still be here.
We just assume that leak from Belichick’s camp is 100% accurate? You mean like try to trade Mac Jones and sign Baker Mayfield?
Who knows....maybe Zappe has some Hoyer-esque combination of lack of skill and savant-like scout team play that he sticks around.Too bad. I was hoping Zappe would be the mentor to Daniels and teach him how to throw the ball five yards or less.
Agreed this was widely expected since at least December, if I recall correctly. Perfect guy for a rebuilding team to stick at QB in training camp and beyond while the rookie learns, a veteran who has been around the league but also can tell stories about how Brady used to do it.Given their offensive hires this seemed like a no brainer. Should give them a chance to at least have a meaningful first camp
I don't agree with this, though, because Brissett is just a stopgap QB. He works as a starter when the team drafts a QB with the 3rd pick, but the mood surrounding his signing would be very different if there were no heir apparent in the QB room (fingers crossed).Nice, boring, no-nonsense move - love it. If Bill had done this a year ago, he'd probably still be here.
Can you say more about this?I am not convinced bringing in Brissett locks the Pats into selecting a QB at #3.
Doesn't one have to have a naissance before he can have a renaissance? Can you say more about this?
They might not draft a QB at #3, but unless there's a shocker (trade for Fields, etc.) I think it's a virtual guarantee they're drafting one of the top 6ish QBs in this draft (Caleb/Maye/Daniels/Penix/Nix/McCarthy), either staying at #3, trading down, or using their 2nd rounder.
Brissett is a solid veteran presence, but he's also a journeyman backup who has only started 16 games since 2019 and will be on his 5th organization in 5 seasons in 2024. There's a remote chance Jacoby pulls off a Geno Smith and has a renaissance out of nowhere, but I would be very surprised if that's Plan A.
Yeah, I mean, I like Jacoby enough as a backup but his career record is 18-30 with a rating a touch below Mac. He won’t lose games for you, but he probably won’t win any either. He’s fine, and he’s a big improvement over whatever team had- but the less he plays, probably the better.Doesn't one have to have a naissance before he can have a renaissance?
Yes, I expect them to draft a QB this year, but I was just doubting all the talk that signing Brissett must mean selecting a QB at #3.Can you say more about this?

I agree with this. If the Commanders take who the Patriots really want, I'm not so sure they settle for "next best"; I'd be tempted to take MHJ or -- if overwhelmed -- trade down, then trade back up into the round to pick off a QBYes, I expect them to draft a QB this year, but I was just doubting all the talk that signing Brissett must mean selecting a QB at #3.
Did you hear about the riot at the Renaissance fair? ... There was luting in the streets.Doesn't one have to have a naissance before he can have a renaissance?
Yeah, I agree. Wolf pretty much came out and said as much. I think they'd be thrilled to get Maye but would still take Daniels. The issue with Daniels is scheme fit but AVP would mold his scheme to fit him. Why? Brissett is on a 1 year deal for, essentially, a backup rate. Clearly the team does not believe he will be the long term answer and currently, the team does not have a long term answer on the roster (Zappe, Rourke, Brissett).
Is it possible the Patriots move out of that spot? Sure. Is it likely? Nope. Personally, I think they are 100% taking a QB with their first pick in the draft and, barring a trade up, that pick with be #3.
Can we get a pick for Zappe?!?
This was tremendous.Maybe a pick 6
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/41057467/jacoby-brissett-journey-becoming-patriots-starting-quarterback-drake-maye"Parcells always says, 'Jacoby, you'll never be somebody's favorite pick. You'll never be somebody's No. 1 guy. There will always be someone the organization or the fans want over you. So whenever you get your chance, you just have to stay in there,'" Brissett said.
Thanks for posting this and you actually kind of undersell how good this article is. Some really great content about his journey through the NFL, his perspectives on being a teammate whether as a starter or backup, and the impact that his therapist has had on his life and career. After all the back and forth over why Maye isn’t starting, Reiss with a really nice piece reminding us why we brought Jacoby here in the first place. It describes how apparently Parcells has been following Brissett since he was 15 and calls him after every game he’s started. And it includes this bit of advice which feels super salient at this moment:

I don’t understand his quotes. They changed the QB and the offense improved leaps and bounds.Doesn’t sound like he’s too interested in coming back.

He "deflected" the question about a new contract, which of course the click-baiter interpreted as something worthy of clicking. Which I did.Doesn’t sound like he’s too interested in coming back.

"The one big change the Patriots made that took the offense from bottom of the league to just below average!"I don’t understand his quotes. They changed the QB and the offense improved leaps and bounds.
