Josh Harrison as an All-Star is kinda weird, given that he's not really a starter for the Pirates. I mean, he kind of is, but he's not the 3B, or the LF, or the 2B... he's a utility player that plays almost every day. I guess his versatility got him in.

AL final five are all SPs: Keuchel, Sale, Kluber, Richards, Porcello. A nice change from Leyland choosing five middle relievers last year (one of whom was a not-yet-the-closer Koji Uehara!)

where the darn libs live
I'm not a fan of a ton of relievers at the ASG but Uehara deserves to be there more than pretty much anyone else.  In terms of relievers who have thrown at least 20 innings, he's #2 in WHIP, #5 in ERA, #6 in K, and #5 in saves (if you care about that) -- and with 5 BB in 39.2 IP.

He's the best reliever in the AL outside of Sean Doolittle.

It's too bad that Koji doesn't get to go, but Lester deserves it as well, and one of the worst teams in major league baseball doesn't deserve to have 2 people make the All-Star team.

How does the team's record have anything to do with the individual performances of it's players?  Koji is one of the best relievers in the game.  Lester is one of the best starters.  Both would be deserving All Star nominations and there would be nothing wrong with both getting to go.

“@Ken_Rosenthal: #Mariners' Rodney, not #Angels' Richards, #Rays' replaces Price on AL All-Star team. Don't like it - Richards fifth in AL in ERA.”

I do not get this replacement either.

I wonder if Farrell's thinking is to get Jeter an AB and then sit him allowing the crowd to acknowledge him but also getting him out of the game early and wasting his AB against what he was probably assuming would be Kershaw.  Turns out Wainwright is starting, which isn't a shock given the NL manager, but if you have to play Jeter you might as well get him out there early and then move on to hitters who can still, you know... hit.

I loved the journalist who asked Matheny if he still would have started Wainwright if he wasn't the manager of the Cards.  The non-answer in return was amusing.

Small aside, but is there going to be a thread for the home run derby or will we just talk about it in here?

Seriously, what does Kershaw have to do to get an AS start? he's been the best pitcher in the NL, no question, each of the last 4 years.

I'm going to go off the board and COMPLIMENT the All Star starting lineups as chosen by the fans.

Only 2 teams have multiple players in the starting lineups:  The Orioles have 2 players, and the Brewers have 3.  SO much better than the days when the Yankees would have 5 or 6 players voted on to the team, etc.  17 different teams have starters.

It's not quite bullshit that Wainwright is starting over Kershaw, because they are close and came in #2 and #1 (respectively) in Cy Young voting last year, but I think any neutral person would have picked Kershaw.

Matheny should have picked Kershaw.

This is also due to the fact that the Yankees don't have many good players anymore.  What Yankee starter should even be in the discussion about ASG starters?

A neutral person would pick Kershaw, but I can't really fault Matheny for picking his guy, who's also having a great year.

I'm rooting for Jeter to be MVP tonight.  Why?

2013 MVP = Mariano
2007 MVP = Ichiro
2004 MVP = Soriano

yes, I know the last two weren't on the Yankees at the time they won MVP, but humor me

Or maybe just root for a guy whose name ends in "o"?  Cano?
