Spring training, 2007. In Fort Myers, we had Daniel Bard and Justin Masterson as guests at the BoSox Club barbecue at the training facility.
Glenn Geffner tried, and fumbled in an interview with the two pitchers, and in essence, Masterson took over the interview by just conversing with Dan, relaxing him and discussing the Cape league and wooden bats. Goose Gregson then came up and accurately described the not-too-distant future for the two guys. It was a fun night and at those get-togethers, you learn a lot about the future, AND, you see their personalities. Bard was shy, almost afraid, while Masterson was the epitome of confidence and ease.
A couple years before that, at the same annual ritual, Dustin Pedroia was unveiled to the Red Sox fandom there. He seemed to be scared, and Jerry Trupiano - a GREAT interviewer - drew him out of his shell. When his interview was finished, he walked up the aisle and asked me in a whisper "how'd I do?" I said "Great! Welcome to Boston!"
