Dan Quinn would seem a logical candidate given his roots there and prior head coaching experience, especially if they don’t want to bring in a guy like Vrabel that’s clearly more of a bull in a china shop and may not be a fit with Schneider.

Man, this sucks. Lots of recent Seahawks fans have been calling for his head, but they obviously have only been a fan in recent years. Carroll is easily the best coach in franchise history. Obviously, he is very old, but still a pretty big stunner.

Seahawks statement (copied from X):
After thoughtful meetings and careful consideration for the best interest of the franchise, we have amicably agreed with Pete Carroll that his role will evolve from Head Coach to remain with the organizationas an advisor.
Pete is the winningest coach in Seahawks history, brought the city its first Super Bowl title, and created a tremendous impact over the past 14 years on the field and in the community.
His expertise in leadership and building a championship culture will continue as an integral part of our organization moving forward.

Quinn makes the most sense, unless there's a guy internally. Old friend Larry Izzo is the ST coach, which I did not realize.

I remember meeting Pete on MIT campus while watching my high school girlfriend compete in a lacrosse tournament. Pete was walking his dog and let me pet his dog and hung out with me watching lacrosse for probably 30 minutes. He's a very sweet guy and I've always liked him.

Did he live in Cambridge while coaching the NEP?

Early rumors from friends who are connected with the team is Shane Waldron or Clint Hurtt are in the running. Take it with a large grain of salt as last night they didnt even know this was coming

Waldron had a interesting path

How does one go from position coach in NFL (Pats) to position coach for Hartford Colonials to OC of BB&N?
That’s a steep decline

Although the Pats could use some offensive quality control right now

Pete out is clearing the path for Harbaugh.
Is this wishcasting or is there a connection? I can’t see how this is a better job than a high draft pick team or Herbert. Seattle does have a good roster but not a top qb.

Is it just me or are there more jobs than exciting candidates? These top guys (Vrabel, Harbaugh, Johnson, please not Bill) are going to have a choice of where they want to be.

Part wishcasting, but it makes some logical sense. Pete became available when the heat started at USC and ended up in Seattle. I could see a similar path for Harbaugh, given the heat is coming on at Michigan and it's a golden opportunity for Seattle to repeat history by having Pete take a front office job and clearing the deck.

Seattle is going to be picking in the area JJ McCarthy is expected to go in the draft, so it wouldn't surprise me if that's a potential plan at QB.

Edit: Am I excited about all of this? I wasn't happy originally when Pete was hired, and I think Harbaugh is a better coach, so I will be cautiously optimistic.

Were there rumors about this? I hadn’t heard that his job was in danger at all
Mina Kimes has been asserting lately that the Seahawks have solid overall talent, and that Geno Smith is actually a good QB. I don’t recall her saying so explicitly, but it’s clear she doesn’t think the Hawks have been well-coached the past two years. I don’t recall hearing any rumors, but I can’t say I’m shocked that ownership apparently agreed with her assessment.

It would also allow Harbaugh to go in the other conference as his brother ala Peyton/Eli.

Mina is a Seattle fan. It is like me talking about the Jets. I think they play pretty good for having Geno Smith at QB.

They haven't been coached well the past few years. Fundamentals have fallen way off, they were one of the worst tackling teams in the league this year.

Geno is mid. I can live with him if the team around him is really good, he's really not capable of leading the team to the promised land. But they had plenty of talent around him this year, and he took a major step back, so I'd be okay if they cut bait too.

I've posted this before, but here's a good Pete story.

I know a guy who is a mean and annoying drunk. Short. Always getting into scraps or instigating shit. He’s an ASU guy. He’s in a bar with some guys — friends of mine — in Mexico. Cabo, Rocky Point, something. Pete is there with a bunch of guys back when he coached at USC. My guy starts yelling all sorts of vile shit at Pete’s table, making everyone uncomfortable. The other guys with the guy (my friends ) get him to shut up, but every few minutes he can’t help himself.

After a while, Pete comes over with a bottle of tequila and drinks with them for like an hour. Pete gets the guy’s address and sends him a USC jersey.

There are a lot of good players in Seattle but the defense was garbage this year. They feel like a purgatory team. QB is meh, they have a few pieces on both sides of the ball.

This would be a heel move for Harbs in SF. He's still beloved by niners fans, they were all rooting for Michigan and happy for the guy.

Would Shane Waldron be a dark horse Pats HC candidate if Bill leaves? ~6 years with Belichick/Weiss/McDaniels in New England/Notre Dame stints. Then 5 years working with McVay in Washington and LA.

Seahawks offense was better last year than this year and he got zero interviews, and zero mentions in the press then. He does some innovative things with TEs, but otherwise he hasn't really impressed me. Offense took a step back this year and that's with a rookie WR3 developing and a rookie RB2 who had a decent season, on top of the existing talent (they lost almost no one in the offseason) and not an overwhelming number of injuries.

Harbaugh is not going to any organization where Carroll is still involved in any capacity. They pretty famously can't stand each other.

I know it was for the HoF ceremony but I did find it weird or odd that the head coach of another team spent his bye week with the Kraft's. I get they do half time ceremonies for the inductees but feels like they could've done something offseason for a guy coaching another NFL team.

$100 million over 5 years would change some attitudes I'm sure. And I don't think Pete stays around long. He's not a front office/advisor type.

Even weirder that he referred to the Patriots as “we” or “us”.

Vrabel and Izzo played together here for EIGHT seasons

Bring the gang together!

They are pretty tight. I recall seeing them come out together to watch a couple of high school super bowl games at Foxborough.

Pete wrapping up his press conference opening statement by saying, "I'm still jacked and fired up."

Perfect. Such a unique human and coach, who fit this city so well.

FWIW, Brian Baldinger was a guest on today's Pardon My Take pod and he thinks Harbs is definitely heading to the NFL.

I'm pretty shocked. (though I'm not always up on the gossip).
Obviously, Pete got replaced in NE by someone who worked out pretty well. But given his steady NFL success, Pete in NE beyond 1999 is a great what-if.

I used to be a fan of Carroll until I heard about his meeting with GEN Chiarelli, who I worked for on brigade staff when he was my Brigade Commander at Ft. Lewis.

9/11 nonsense.

Chiarelli is a good man. Carroll may be a good football coach, but he's a fucking loon.

Edit: Seems like a nice guy though.

to be honest you the phrase'"winningest coach in seattle history" isnt really that high of a bar
