Broncos fire coaching staff: Nothing beats that new coach smell

Reading way too much into this, if there's a lot of turnover in the coaching staff, does it tilt the needle for Manning? Too bad he's in Buffalo, because Rex with Peyton would've been an all time WWE twist.

Edit- Gase getting promoted seems the most likely path, obviously.

Is this a desperate attempt at keeping Manning by promoting Gase to HC since "they're close"?

Or are the Broncos looking toward the future and see Gase just as a better long-term bet, especially with Manning retiring? I could see it either way but the Broncos could be hitting the big reset button this off-season with all their FA's and associated cap space.

Have to think (a) Adam Gase gets the job or (b) this becomes a total housecleaning, with Manning off to retirement or greener pastures.
This is all Peyton pulling the levers. Gase was going to take a HC somewhere else so Peyton put his foot down and got him promoted before he could leave. Peyton is coming back next year and he's got his binkie.

This isn't  really surprising. The Broncos were never going to win with him as their coach.

Well..they did win with him -- with both Tebow and Peyton, and specifically over the last 3 years 2 #1 seeds and 1 #2 seed. No, they didn't win a SB, but seems to me they have been very well coached and I'm not sure what he's supposed to do if Peyton disintegrates down the stretch -- is that really on him?

Plus he took the Panthers to the Super Bowl.

He's the same brand of mediocre as Smith, Rex, and Marrone, not shocked he's out given the playoff underperformance the last three years but good chance Denver doesn't upgrade.

I am still confounded as to how he was this close to beating us in the SB with the Panthers.
Those teams had two great lines and reportedly were roided up to the gills.

I just looked it up and man did they have some great young players. Peppers Smith Gross Jenkins Witherspoon Morgan-a lot of those guys had terrific careers.

Elway is smarter and shrewder than that.  Equally, if not more likely that he's cleaning house to make coming back unappealing to Manning.  He saw what we saw.

Talib wasn't hurt yesterday but he was beyond terrible. I was shocked at how bad he was. Nowhere near his receiver on many plays.

Unless of course he "resigns as the HC of the BB" at his introductory press conference.

Both Thomases are free agents as well, correct? Might be the thing that pushes Peyton into retirement. Second half decline, possibly a new system, possibly losing favorite targets, etc. At some point, he'll have to seriously consider riding into the sunset.

It's not fair lumping him with Smith and Rex.  The guy took two different teams to the Super Bowl, one with Jake Delhomme at the helm.

And won a playoff game with Tebow. And, more than anything, to me he showed rather excellent adaptability -- wasn't an old line coach who couid only win one way but not another. The approaches of his teams really varied according to circumstance -- a mark of a good coach it seems to me. Peyton against Indy audibling out of the more run first approach of recent weeks may have been part of the behind the scenes politics here, since that run first approach was yet another example of how his teams changed on the fly. There's also just the basic discipline of his teams. I'd much rather hire Fox than the range of young coordinators that are out there -- if I"m Chicago or Atlanta, especially, I'm all over him. Same as the Jets, for that matter.

Peyton Manning only comes back if Gase is here. Period. I was told that yesterday and it makes even more sense now.

@VicLombardi: NEW INFO: Entire Broncos coaching staff let go. Not just John Fox. All assistants gone according to several players.

Holy crap

Bigger question: Does Denver think Peyton has enough left to want him back?

Meh, Id be pretty underwhelmed if I was Chicago or Atlanta, but the options sort of suck so I guess its fine.  Not a fan of trying to win meaningful games with a guy who does uberconservative stuff like takes a knee with 45 seconds left and in his prime Peyton Manning like he did in that Ravens loss.  Im not really a fan.

Broncos fans seem happy with this, but this is really stupid right?

I mean scar stuck around for 20 plus years, there is value in continuity.

So it has to be EITHER Gase or Del Rio staying, right?

Wow -- the entire staff?

If Manning retires at least one of the Thomases gone. Denver has some serious decisions ahead as the list of their FA is a doozer:
  • Wes Welker
  • D. Thomas
  • J. Thomas
  • Pot Roast Knighton
  • Rahim Moore
  • Orlando Franklin
That's 6 starters about to hit the open market: http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/denver-broncos/

@JeffDarlington: Member of the Broncos coaching staff tells me that the entire staff has been notified during group meeting that can/should look elsewhere.

Yeah, there's a recent quote from Kraft about how the advice he gives others is how important continuity is (add obvious caveat: easy to say when you have BB). I really think that's the truth. If the Bills and Jets end up trading Marrone for Rex as HCs, both are worse off due to the lack of continuity.

Obviously there's huge politics going on in Denver so who knows, but in a vacuum this seems like a really bad move.

@JasonLaCanfora Doing more digging on Broncos opening - would actually be very surprised if they went in-house, including Gase. Won't be M. Shanahan either

No Gase, no Shanny? All signs pointing to Manning retiring.

You just have to figure Manning told Elway his real intentions to hang'em up -- otherwise Elway does not make this decision to let everyone go.

And all of this is happening just as the Denver fans get their wish of the Pats having to play in Denver in the regular season.

I'm shocked.  I thought they would at least keep Gase since Peyton is a fan of his.  If these reports are true, it suggests to me that either Elway doesn't want Peyton back or doesn't think Peyton is coming back.  Because does Peyton really want to adjust to an entirely new coaching staff, incuding QB coach and OC, just to play out one final year?

Re-tread smells like crap. I'm buying the Shanahan rumors. He's been whispering in Elway's ear.

ETA: Who are the only two guys in football who can say "I know how to send you out a winner." Peyton's coming back, but he's coming back to be Elway in 98 - handing the ball off to a 2000 yard rusher and relying on a great defense. That's what Denver has, plus Manning's brain (if not his arm).

Firing the entire staff, including Gase, and playing the only card left - we can win one in your final season - is a compelling pitch from Elway and Shanahan.
