He had 38 points two years ago as a 22 year old. Possible upside at the age of 24?On paper his numbers look underwhelming. Right handed RW. 24 years old. I admittedly don't know much about him. What's his role here?
Depends on how much the B's retained. 50% I'd have to think.Clears cap space though, right? Would allow for another move.
Yes, but not having their first to deal would make that harder.Clears cap space though, right? Would allow for another move.
He's also shooting at 5.2% this year so have to figure that will regress to norm. I would expect him to play middle six role likely as RW2.On paper his numbers look underwhelming. Right handed RW. 24 years old. I admittedly don't know much about him. What's his role here?
I like it as a buy low with potential future upside trade, as long as they add another winger to help this year. He is a RFA, and his shooting percentage has dropped this year to 5.2%, which is not likely to continue and makes him look worse offensively than he really is.
I would hope not. They shouldn't be retaining any of it if they are giving up a 1st and a prospect.I have to think if they are giving a first and a prospect in Alex Andersson who was a 2nd round pick that they aren't going to retain any of Backes salary.
He immediate is your 2nd best RW, so I think it's more than a marginal upgrade. He's a good player, only concern is health.Seems like a huge cost to get at best a marginal upgrade on roster talent. Not sure why they are retaining salary in that deal.
They get a player for 2 more years though, this isn't a rental. They got better this year, got a player for longer term, and freed up money next year. I'm ok with this, much rather use the 1st this way (which might help sign Krug next year) than for 2 months of Kreider.Retaining salary in this deal really sucks. They gave up a lot to attach Backes' deal in this AND they have to pay 25% of it. Now, the 1st rd pick is not in play for a Kreider or a Palmieri. If this is all Sweeney does, I'd be very disappointed.
One more year. He's RFA after next season but that's still fine. They get a player for 2 more years though, this isn't a rental. 1 more year at the current price, but he's still under their control as an RFA is what I meant. One more year. He's RFA after next season but that's still fine.
Would it affect your thinking if freeing up the 75% allows them to resign Krug? I think Sweeney did outstanding to only have to retain 25% and get a player with upside even with the 1st attached.Retaining salary in this deal really sucks. This makes sense to me. And agreed, though at this point maybe Backes just wanted back on the ice before he rusted shut. The Leafs paid a 1st round pick to unload one year of Patrick Marleau. The B’s are unloading 1.5 years of Backes’ contract. They added Axel Andersson and retained 25% and got a very good young player in return. I think they did well.
Kinda surprised Backes was ok with Anaheim.
Yes he has term which is good. I just think the optimal way to go about this deadline is a Kase-type player for the 3rd line and Kreider or Palmieri for the 2nd line. They get a player for 2 more years though, this isn't a rental. Long-term yes it's very good that a lot of Backes' money is off the books. Right now they have approx. $20 million in cap space with this deal. Just thinking about this season however, I hope Sweeney has another move up his sleeve.Would it affect your thinking if freeing up the 75% allows them to resign Krug? Also if Ducks buy him out (which is likely), the cap hit for next season drops to $1M (with a $250K hit the following season).A 1.5 cap hit next year is not the end of the world with Beleskey and Seidenberg dead money coming off the books.
When he's on the ice, he's been good. But he's been injured a lot the last 2 seasons and hasn't played in 2 weeks. If this is Sweeney's big upgrade, it's a big gamble for this year IMO.Kase is a monster, I love this deal. Perfect RW for Krejci
They still have assets and could shed some more cap for Palmieri if they traded Heinen with futures. Who knows if they have enough, but the extra cap space here makes that stuff possible. If they moved Heinen and added Palmieri theyd still have $16 mil in cap space next year.Long-term yes it's very good that a lot of Backes' money is off the books. Yes I hope he does. Kase now makes one of the young wings expendable. They still have assets and could shed some more cap for Palmieri if they traded Heinen with futures.
