Neal saw Marchand down and kneed him in the head.  Thornton slew-footed Orpik to drag him down and punched him twice while he was down.  The first one seemed to just graze on the way by, but knocked Orpik completely out.

That was horrible.

And how was that knee only 2 minutes?
I don't know how a ref can call 2 minutes there if he spots the penalty. Targeting a downed player with a knee seems like a double-minor at least.

Thornton's 5 is well-deserved.

I mean, it sucks that Orpik got hurt so badly, but when your organization plays like they have for a long time now, including 15 seconds before, you're going to get a teammate hurt.

EDIT: Neal intended to hurt Marchand and targeted his head.  It's not like Thornton had worse intent.

I agree, but it still makes me feel kind of bad rooting for a guy who did that. I'm not saying getting the shit kicked out him wasn't deserved, but to do it in that fashion is just dirty. You don't hit a guy when he's on the ice.

I'd never beat Brooks Orpik unconscious, but I understand.

He gave him the chance earlier to go while he was standing up.  Pittsburgh's reaping the whirlwind.  Orpik concussed Ericksson and Neal tried to concuss Marchand.  Tough shit.

EDIT: Thornton shouldn't have done it the way he did.  I just don't really give a shit beyond that.

Yeah I just don't feel that bad.

I mean, i wish Thornton didn't do what he did, but only because it put the bruins in a bad position.

Mainly, fuck the Pittsburg penguins.

Missed most of the first—did Loui really get concussed again? Where's Bobby Robins when you need him?

So Thornton pulled a Bertuzzi. Why do I get the feeling he's gone for a REALLY long time?
...because hes probably (rightfully) gone for a really long time. The NHL cant allow the Pandoras box of punching guys when theyre already down get opened. I think we're all going to be angry about Neal's knee though. He'll probably only get a game, even though it is also a hit on a downed player.

I wouldn't be surprised if nothing happens to Neal.
Agreed.  Marchy not being injured probably means the Wheel of Justice lands on zero games for this one.

Kneeing the head of a defenseless player down on the ice is fine.

Especially if the kneeing player is a penguin or Canadian.

Oh, I saw everyone say something in the 20s, but after the Bertuzzi-Moore debacle, I get the feeling Shanahan will be reminded of that and will start the discussion at 25 minimum, and 35-40 wouldn't shock me. Assaulting a player prone on the ice seems like something the NHL wants to make him pay for in an unprecedented way to keep it from happening again.

I assume we'll get a quick missive about how there's no evidence it was intentional, despite Jaffe's pleas.

Was the Loui hit bad? They never showed a replay here. My reaction from the other end of the building was that it was possibly interference, but the body contact was clean. I've never seen Thornton lose his mind like that. Inexcusable.

How long will Shawn Thornton's suspension be?

Will be ever see ice time in the NHL again?

You have to admit it's kinda gutless to rush a guy from behind, throw him and after his head bounces on the ice to then sucker punch him a couple of times in his defenseless face.

Well... That's one way of describing what happened. Not exactly accurate. But...

I don't think this happened.  Looked like Thorny was holding him up and just cold cocked him square and knocked him out.
